FRANK L. PLATE, GEORGE 1\T. I-IEIN, AND ROBERT B. IMPEY, 013 SAN FRANCISCO,
GALIFQBNIA.'
SYRINGE-AIEPLICATDR.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FRANK L. PLATT, GEORGE N. HEIN, and ROBERT R. IMPEY, citi- Zens of the United States, residing at the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Syringe-Applicators, of which the following is a specification.
In the dental profession it has become necessary, when administering a local anesthetic during the extraction of teeth or the treatment of the jaw bone in order to obtain the best results from the anesthetic, to insert or force the hypodermic needle into the bone tissue. The forcing of the needle point into the bone tissue requires considerable pressure to be placed on the needle and this is easily accomplished when straight needles are employed, but it is often necessary under certain conditions to employ a curved needle, and the forcing of the point thereof into the bone tissue is almost impossible owing to the curvature of the needle and brittleness thereof. "When pressure is placed on the syringe barrel to force the point of a curved needle into the bone tissue, the needle buckles in its curved portion and often breaks, and in general is very unsatisfactory.
The present invention relates to what may be termed an adapter for use in connection with syringes between the syringe end and the needle, which permits of the use of a straight needle angularly disposed relative to the syringe body, which overcomes the requirement for a curved needle which in certain cases is required, thus enabling a straight needle to be employed in all cases. A further object of the present invention is to provide a construction whereby, when it is desired to force the needle point into the bone tissue, when the needle is disposed angularly of theibarrel, pressure may be placed on the needle at a point in direct line with the same, whereby the side strain thrust on the needle is overcome by the employment of the present adapter with a straight needle secured to the end thereof and angularly disposed relatively to the barrel end. A further object is to provide a means whereby the needle may be subi e d to l gh appi g o more readily fast-l tes 35. erp nsaf th pa er of si e t e bas tissue "with ut th li bility of Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed May 5, 1919. Serial No. 295,071.

breaking the needle, which is always the case when curved needles are employed.
WVith the above mentioned and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and set forth in the claims hereto appended, it being understoodthat various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the inventlon.
To more fully comprehend the invention, reference is directed to the accompanying drawing, wherein the figure discloses a view in side elevation of the preferred embodiment of our invention applied to a syringe and disclosing the straight needle detachably secured to the end of the applicator.
In the drawings, wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts, 1 indicates a conventional hypodermic syringe body of any suitable type, having the usual plunger 2 and finger grlps 3. Se
cured in any suitable manner, preferably by being detachably threaded to the discharge end of the syringe barrel 1 is the base 4 of the preferred form of our applicator 5, the base being in line with the barrel 1 and having extended from the outer end thereof at any suitable angle or curvature an extension 6, to which is detachably secured the needle base 7 mounting any suitable form of hypodermic needle 8 of the straight type. EX- tending rearwardly from the base 4 and disposed in alinement with the needle 8 is a suitable stud 9 to which is detachably secured preferably by a slidable connection a finger or thumb rest 10 of any suitable con struction and length, the same being placed in alinement with the needle and overlying the syringe barrel to enable the operator to press thereon when using the syringe to insure direct longitudinal pressure on the needle 8, either when injecting the fluid into the tissue or when inserting the needle point into the tissue. It will be apparent by the employment of our applicator wherein the discharge end is angularly disposed or offset relatively to the base or body which is in line with the syringe barrel, that we are enabled by the use of this applicator to empl y stra ht etdlts all we e t us dis pensing 'With the necessity of purchasing straight needles for certain Work-and the unstalsfactory curved needles for other Work,
it being practically' impossible to insert the point thereof into the bone tissues While Wehave illustrated the adapter as having portions disposed angularly t'o each "other, it is to be understood that a curved I applicator may be equally as well' employed,

- 2. In combination with a hypodermi syringe, a straight needle associated thereith, an 'adapter for connecting the syringe com as pares; ma b' o amea'ror barrel and needle to dispose the needle outwardly from the syringe end and at an angle relatively to the syringe barrel, and a pressure receiving member extending from saidadapter substantially in alinenient with said needle and disposed angular-1y to said barrel to overlie the same.

In testimony whereof e have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
