GATE-FORMER FOR CASTING APPARATUS.

Be it known that I, JOHN KRALUNmn citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Brooklyn, in the city of New ing Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved constructlon of gate former for casting apparatus, and particularly die casting appara-" tus. My invention is particularly designed for use in connection with the casting apparatus disclosed in my Patent- No. 1,299,738, issued April 8, 1919, on die casting apparatus, although it is not limited strictly to coaction with such apparatus.
In the apparatus described in my said patent, molten metal is transferred from its containerto the die by means of a moving carrier or ladle, the mouth-piece of which moves into connection with an opening extending through a gate member. Conipressed air or the like'then forces the metal through this opening into a die which may besecured to or positioned adjacent to the gate member, A bushing ordinarily extends through the opening in the gate member, and

My invention overcomes this difiiculty by a construction embodying a jacket for a cooling medium, such as water, surrounding the tube through which the molten metal passes, together with means for circulating a cooling medium therethrough, so that the temperature of the inner 'tube will be prevented from becoming' 'excessively high, so that the necessity for renewing the bushings or gate formers will be largely obviated.-
In order that a clearer understanding of my invention may be had, attention ishereby directed to the accompanying drawings formingpart of this application and 'illustrating one embodiment of my invention. Referring to the drawings, the gate mem- This gate member is provided with a horizontal opening therethrough within which is mounted an outer shell or tube 2. An inner shell or tube,3 is mounted within the outer shell 2. The outer tube 2 is provided with a portion '2 having an inner surface of greater diameter than the remaining portion 2 of the tube. The inner tube 3 'preferalt ly is mounted with a forced fit within the portion 2" of reduced diameter ofthe outer shell, an annular space 4: being provided between the outer surface of the inner shell and the inner surface of the portion 2 of the outer shell.
The outer tube 2 is PIOXlClP/(l with an enlarged head portion 5 which is adapted to engage against a face of the gate member '1. This head is preferably provided with shoulders 6 so that it may conveniently be manipulated by a wrench in adjusting the tube into position. Thehead 5 has an opening 'therethrough, as is indicated at 7, of the same diameter as that of the opening through the portion 2 of tube 2, so that the inner tube 3 will have a forced fit bearing within the head 5 and within the portion 2 of tube 2, at opposite ends of the annular space 4. The annular space is thus made water-tight, the tube 2 constituting a water jacket surrounding the inner tube or gate former 3.
The head 5 is preferably provided with a recess 8 in its face, of the same diameter as the shouldered portion 9 on the end of the inner tube 3, so that thisshoulder fits within the recess 8 with a forced fit, the shoulder acting .as a stop to preventithe inner tube 3 being driven too far into the tube 2.
-The inner end of tube 3 is preferably provided with a tapered seat 10, within the shouldered portion- 9 and communicating with the bore of the tube.
