Application filed May 26,
To all whom it may concern Bert known that l, oscon RATCLIFFE, a
citizen of the United S ates of America, re-
siding at New Britain, Connecticut, have invented anew and useful Switch-l-landle, of which the following is a specihoation.
The present ZH'YEHUOII. has reterencepar= ticularly to operating handles for inclosed illustrated the invention embodied .view
switches. The obgects of the invention are to provide a simple and inexpensive handle construction. which can be readily assembled or combined with the switch mechanism.
Briefly considered, the invention-consists of a handle which is journaled in the Wall of the box inclosing the switch mechanism and which is held in place by an annular collar provided by expanding or rolling over the metal surrounding an opening in the end the handle, said collar thereby serving to prevent movement of the handle in one direction and a shoulder on the handle serving to prevent movement in the opposite direction.
Various other features of the invention will appear-as the specification proceeds.
In the accompanying drawing I have in one of its practical and commercial terms and wherein: I
Figure 1 is a plan View of an inclosed type of switch having the invention incorporated therein. Fig. 2 is a cross sectional View oli'the same taken substantially on the plane of line 2 01 Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged and broken sectional illustrative of the method of securing the handle in place. I I
The switch mechanism consists in the present disclosure of an insulating base upon which are mounted the fixed contacts .G and the pivoted switch blades '7 for engagement therewith. These pivoted switch blades are shown connected by a cross bar 8 which in turn is connected by a link. 9 and spring 10 with the cranked or offset portion 11 of the operating handle 12. This operating handle is shown made from a length of rod bent to provide the cranked port-ion referred to and the operat ing handleat one end thereof, said rod laring straight shaft portions 13, journal-w. at

Patented Nov. fill opposite ends in the opposite Walls of the box H Which incloses the switch inechariisni.
- n l u The handle 18 secured in place and held against longitudinal shiftingv movement by an annular outstanding collar 1501s the end thereol adapted to engage the outer s 7? of the box Wall, and a shoulder 1%} arranged to engage the inner surface of the box Wall.
1 hese positioning shoulders are provided by.
turning down the end-portion-oi' the red as indicated at 1! to form reduced journal portion which is rotatably engaged in the bearing opening 18 provided in the box- Wall. The turning down of the end portion of the shaft leaves the abutment shoulder 16 before described for engagement with the inner face of the box wall;
The annular stop shoulder at the outer surface of the ho Wall is provided by boring or otherwise forming a longitudinal opening 19 in the outer end of the shaft, as
indicated in Fig. 3, and then expanding or through the bearing openingfll in one side 1 of the box and into engagement With the bearing opening 18 in the opposite side ofthe box. In this position the reduced por tion fits in this latter bearing opening and the bore in the end of the reduced portion is located at the outer face of the box Wall in position Where it can be readily operated upon bya suitable 'tool to roll 0Y8? the metal surrounding the end opening on the shaft. lYhe n the end of the shaft is thus expanded. the shaft firmly secured in place within the box. and is held against longitudinal shitting movement in both directions. This is both a practical and a Terr inexpensive Way of mounting the handle shaft in the box.
I claim:
l. in air iuelosed switch. a switch box having journal openings in opposite wall thereofi switch mechanism mounted in said 9 opening in l lio opnosil'awall shoulder at "he. inne end of poii'ion homing against i'hn innei: surface of the box wall to liuiis outwzu'il movement 1 'UUIlLlOll having lorgituilinul opening ahoiein at the outer side of the ho mill and ihe niutvi'izil Sui-rounding said ogening no ing expanded rmlir-i y ouiwui-clh; into an annular collar providing u stop engaging the outer face of the wall to limit mo inl the opern bing shaft.
ward movement oi 2 In combination, a switch box having a journal opening in the wall thereof, switch mechanism mounted in suicl box, an ope-rut ing hainlle for said switch mocha "sin having a pent-ion jOUl'HiilQCl in said hearing open and provided with an annular snoulcler engagingthe bQX wall to limit movement of handle in one Qlimotion said handle having an opening in l 1 and thereof ancl the material SUl'lOUlMlZ sllil opening lining 11rd into an integral expanded radially on w annular collar engaging the box wall to limit inovsinont of the handle in the opposite,
direction,
In a switch 01'? the character debtrzribecl,
a supporting wall having a bearing oponing therein, switch mechanism and an operating hzfiile for 5: ill sWliCll illt(ll;l!.ti:-3ll having a poi-hon joui'nulml in riillil hearing fiiflllllig :1
31d provided with an onisliiniling shoulder ngzigiug one fame of the supporting wall izo inii'l' movement of "the handle in one (limoion the 9nd of the shaft in the opposiie v lle of said supporting wall having an o sening illBlBl'il and the metal surrounding said oponing being expanded outwardly and pro riding an outstanding collar for engagement with the opposite surface of the supporting wall for limiting movementof tho handle in the oppositedirection.
&. In a switch of the character described, a supportingwall having a bearing opening therein, switch mechanism and an operating handle for said switch mechanism having a portion journuled in said bearing opening and provided with an outstanding shoulder engaging one face of the supporting wall to limit movement of the handle in ono direction, the end of the shaft at the opposite.
side of said supporting wall having an opening therein unil the metal surrounding sand opening being expanded outwardly for lim ituig movement ofthe handle in the opposite direction.
