To aZZivwm t may concern Be it known thatl,` EDWARD G.' QKi-ANTZ, i'
citizen of the United States, residing at Highland, in the county of Madison and' State of Illinois, have invented certain new ,and useful Improvements inV Clutch#Locksv for Automobiles, of .which the followingl is a specification. r e y This invention relates to clutch locks and has special adaptation for use on automobiles. Y L An object of the invention istoprovide a locking means for the clutch pedals, whereby the latter will be rendered inoperative` when desired, but will be readily accessible to authorized persons.
A. further object is to provide'a device which is equally applicable to the diiferent types of automobiles and which will in no way interfere with the operator of the vehicle or with the mechanism forming a part of the latter.
The, above and other vobjects and .advantages of this invention rwill be in'part descrirbed and in part understoodfroin the following description of thepresent preferred embodiment, the same being illusytrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of` a lock constructed in accordance with Vmy invention, illustrating the application thereof.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the locking device, and
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the same, showing the closure thereof removed.
InV the drawings in order to illustrate the application of `my invention, a portion of the licorv or foot board 1 of an automobile is shown, with which is associated a clutch pedal 2 of the usual or any desired configuration. The lock generally designated 3 is shown as arranged in close proximity tothe clutch pedal 2. Y
The lock consists of an elongated casing 4, preferably made of metal and equipped with a bar 5 which is secured to thebottom i of the casing in any suitable manner. The casing is adapted to be countersunk in the yHoor 1 and is provided with a flange 6 to for releasing the lock through theleywa'y 9.
Specification ofV Letters Patent; PatentedbNV `11, fiippiicationniea iipriil 5,1917. semina. 160,029. I' y The end of the bar 5, which is adjacent the clutch pedal 2, is turned .upwardly at right angles, as indicated at 10,V andf is provided with an opening through which a bolt 11 is slidably mounted. The bolt lliis freely .movable in the casing a andmay 'be projected beyondl the latter 'throughV anV the casingtherel openingl12. The end of fore acts asa bearing, fin conjunctionwith the right-angled portion of the bar 5,'for't'he locking bolt 1 1. The inner end of the bolt is equipped with a linger trip piece 13, which is pivotally mounted and has a nose 14 formed thereon whichis adapted for en@ gagement in either on@ of openings 15. ln this way the boltmay be locked while in an operative position as shown in Fig. 2, or vif desired may be locked when in an inoperative position, by engaging the nose llwith the opening 15 which is farthest remote from the right-angled end 10 of the bar'. It is, of Course, Vunderstood thatthe'boltll is so arranged that it will either lie in the path ofthe clutch leveror elseV will pass through an opening in the clutch lever, as shown in Fig. 2. f
A metallic strap 16 is transversely arranged over the top of the bolt 11 and secured thereto. The ends of said strap are turned upwardly at rightV angles and are adapted torabut the opposite walls of the casing to facilitate guidingof the bolts.
1n Vuse therefore it will be appreciated that when the operator desires to loc-k his clutch pedal, the closure 8 of the casing tis opened and the operator moves the bolt 11 through the` medium of the linger piece 13 in-to the position shown in F ig. 2. The bolt cannot be retracted in the casing until the finger piece 13 has been raised and consequently when the closureS is locked access to the-linger piece 13 will be closed with an obvious result. l
VIt will be understood l that the above description and accompanying drawingscom` prehend only the-general and preferred eniclaims without sacrificing any ofthe advantages of my invention.
l clainir- 1. In a device of the character described,
the combination of a'casing, a har fixed within said casing and having openings formed therethrough intermediate its ends, one end of said bar being turned to extend at right angles thereto, said end being pr vided With an opening formed therethrough, said casing having` an opening thereinin alinement with the opening of the extended end of said bar, a bolt slidable through the openings thus being held against side swinging moreinent, and means for holding said bolt in adjusted position.
2. in a device of the character described, the combination of a casing, a bar fixed Within said casing and having openings formed therethrough intermediateits. ends, said bar beingbent adjacent one end to form an angularly extending end portion haring an opening extending therethrough, said casingi having an opening therethrough in alinement with the opening of said bent end, a bolt slidable Jthrough said openings, thus being held against side movement, a ringer piece pivotally mounted upon the inner end or said bolt, said finger piece having a nose adapted to fit Within one of the openings of lsaid bar to hold the bolt in an adjusted position and a movable closure for said casing engaging said finger piece to holdthe saine against accidental shifting, whereby the bolt will be held against unauthorized movement.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination of a casing having an opening in one end thereof, a Ibar fixed Within said casing and extending longitudinally thereof, said bar terminating in an upturned apertured end and spaced from said casing, said apertured end and said opening being in alinenient with each other, said bar having openings intermediate its ends, a bolt slidable through said first mentioned opening and aperture, thus being held against side moreH ment, a linger piece pivotally mounted upon the inner end of said bolt and haring nose adapted to be received Within one oi said last mentioned openings of said bar, a movable closure carried upon said casing for engaging said finger piene and holding the same against pivotal movement, whereby said bolt Will be held against accidental unormed therethrough authorized shifting, a strap fixe-d upon said bolt and extending transversely thereof,k
said strap having angularly bent ends which are substantially parallel to each other engaging the inner surfaces of said casing, whereby said bolt will be held against ac cidental rotation, thus being held to properly slide when said nose is released from enga-gement with said bar.
In testimony7 Whereoi` I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
