RULE-HOLDER.
Application filed February 13, 1918.
'1 b all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES C. WINTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Garrick, Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsfylvania, have invented certain new and use ul Improvements in Rule-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to rule holders and has for its object the production of a simple and eflicient spring clasp which may be adjustably supported upon a portion of the foldable rule for facilitating the holding of the foldable rule within a pocket.
Another object of this lnvention is the production of a simple and efficient means for attaching the spring clasp to the ruler.
With these and other ob ects in view, this invention consists of certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of arts as will be hereinafter fully descri ed and claimed.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is an edge elevation of the rule in a folded position showing the ruler holder carried thereby,
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a portion of the ruler showing the ruler holder sup ported thereon,
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the ruler holder clasp,
Fig. 4 is a section taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrow.
By referring to the drawings, it will be en that 1 designates the ruler which may be of the usual or ordinary construction of the folding type and the ruler holder is adjustably secured to one of the sections of the ruler 1 as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing. This ruler holder comprises a clamp 2 which clamp 52 is adapted to fit around one of the sections of the ruler and is provided with a pair of laterally extending side flanges 3, these side flanges fitting snugly in engagement with each other as shown in Fig. 4. Suitable securing bolts 4,
extend through these flanges 3 and carrv nuts 5 for firmly clamping the jaws 5 of the clamp 2 in engagement with the ruler 1. This clamp 2 is preferably rectangular in shape so as to fit snugly around the section Specification!-Lettefifatent.
Patented Nov. 11, 1919. Serial No. 216,884.
of the ruler and permit the clam 2 to be adjustably supported upon the section of the being provided with an upwardly inclined lip 12 at the lower end thereof.
In operation, the ruler is folded as shown in Fig. 1 and the same is of the pocket, the spring nature of the tongue or clasp 7 firmly rip ing the outer face of the pocket and 0] ing the ruler against accidentall falling from the pocket of the workman. t the same time the ruler may be easily removed from the pocket by pulling upwardly upon the same, but the spring clasp or tongue 7 will possess sufficient resiliency to firmly hold the ruler against accidentally dropping from the pocket. Furthermore due to the construction of the lower end of the clasp or tongue 7, the ruler may be easily placed in the pocket and the spring tongue 7 will automatically slide upon the outer face of the pocket and firmly hold the ruler in a proper position. The up-turned lip 12 will prevent the spring clasp 7 from catching in the pocket while the ruler is being inserted and will guide the spring tongue 7 over the outer face of the pocket to a proper clamping position.
What is claimed is:
As a new article of manufacture, a rule holder comprising a clamp formed of sheet metal adapted to fit snugly around a section of a rule and having laterally extending flange portions adapted to fit snugly together for receiving a clamping means, a spring clasp secured to the front edge of said clamp and adapted to lie snugly against the edge of a ruler. said clamp pro vided with an outwardly bent shank terminating in a gradually inwardly extending curved lower end, the extremity of said supporting medium for firmly supporting curved lower end being outwardly bowed the ruler carried thereby Within a pocket. 10
and terminating in a gripping lip bent out- In testimon whereof I aflix my signature wardly at an angle from said'lower end, the in presence 0 two witnesses.
lower end of said clasp adapted to snugly CHARLES C. WINTER. adhere to the edge of the ruler, the inner face Witnesses:
of said clasp being unobstructed for permit- HARRY W. GREEN,
ting the free insertion of said clasp over a, LACY WM. GREEIR.
