Description
D. A. STEVENS.
Improvement in Rest for Finishing Mouldi'ngs.
N0. 132,115, l Patented Oct. 8,1872.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID A. STEVENS, OF TOLEDO, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN RESTS FOR FINISHING MOLDINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 132,115, dated October 8, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAViD A. STEVENS, of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a rest for Finishing Moldings and Irregular Forms; and that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
This invention has for its object the construction of a rest or bed for planing, sanding, &c., moldings and other irregular forms; and the invention consists in making a boxrest or bed, and providing it with one or more adjustable clamps for holding the molding &c., in place while it is being planed, sanded, or otherwise finished.
Much di'iiiculty has been found in planing, sanding, and linishing moldings and other irregular forms by reason of their irregular surfaces, which made it almost impossible to retain it in a lixed position while operating on it. It is believed that this difficulty is fully obviated by the present invention.
In the accompanying sheet of drawing, Figure l represents a plan or top view of my invention 5 Fig. 2, a longitudinal section of same; and Fig. 3, a transverse section of same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the several figures.
A represents a rectangular box, which may be constructed either of wood or any other suitable material, and of any desirable size. It is closed at the bottom, and has an opening, B, at its top, extending in the direction of its length. In theinner surface of the sides of the box A, and running lengthwise, are formed two parallel grooves or rabbets, a. a, into which is fitted a sliding block or clamp, C, in such manner as will enable said block to slide freely within the grooves or rabbets a a, the upper surface of said block being flush with the upper surface of the edge of the box A. To one end of the block C is rmly secured a holdfast, D, with serrations in its projecting end, and to the other end of said block is fitted, with a hinge-joint, a catch-piece, c, which, when in the position shown in Fig. 2, will enable the block G to be pushed in or out, and, when folded out parallel with the block, it will offer no obstruction to the passage of the plane or sand-paper. Through from the top to the bottom ofthe block O is inserted a set-screw, d, having a square formed on its upper end, which is constructed below its top surface, by means of which said block is held in any required position. The other end of the box A may have a similar adjustable block to the one just described, or it may be securely closed with a xed block, E as shown in Fig. 2, the xed block having secured to it a holdfast, F,
The construction of my rest being substantially as above described, its operation is as follows: The molding or other irregular piece of wood is placed in the opening B, the edges of the molding projecting and resting on the edges of the box. One end thereof is then pressed against the points of the holdfast F, and the block O is moved up to it by means of the catch-piece c, or by any other means, the points of the holdfast D entering into the end of the molding, when the block C is rmly held in position by turning the set-screw 0l by means of the key f, which turns the screw down to the bottom' of the box A, and thus keeps the block in the required position. The molding being in this way secured, the box A may be placed on an ordinary carpenters bench or vise, and the surface of the molding planed or sanded off. When one side is nished the position of the molding is changed in the manner above described, exposing an- Otherside, until the whole surface of the molding has been finished.
It is obvious that the implement above described may be constructed in many different ways; but as these would be mere matters of construction I do not describe these various mechanical modifications; but
WhatI do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the fixed and movable clamps, the fastening set-screw, a portable box carrying the operating parts, and the hinged block applied to the adjustable clamp, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
DAVID A. STEVENS.
