PANEL-BOARD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
. Patented Nov. 11, 1919.
Application filed May 18, 1918. Serial No. 235,242.
The objects of the invention are to pro- 'vide a suitable cover for panel boards of this sectional or extensible construction and to provide a grounding connection which will insure proper grounding of the cover.
According to the invention, each panel unit is provided with a cover section and these cover sections are formed with upturned flanges which cooperate when the cover sections are assembled to form a lateral inclosure about the sectional cover. Proper grounding of the various cover sections is insured by securing said cover sections in place by screws or other fastening devices which make electrical connection with a common ground bar.
Various other features of the invention and details of construction will appear as the specification proceeds.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the invention embodied in one of its practical commercial forms but it is to be understood that changes and modifications may be made without departure from the true spirit and scope of the invention.
In said drawings Figure 1, is a broken front view of the panel board.
Fig. 2, is a longitudinal sectional view of the same, taken substantially on the plane of the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a broken perspective view of the sectional cover as applied to the assembled panel units.
Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views of the blanks from which the cover sections are formed.
The structure of the panel units will vary to suit di ferent requirements. In the illustration the panel units are shown in the form of push button switches 8, said units being assembled in side by side relation on sub bases or base sections 7, to form a built up panel of the required character and capacity.
These panel units are provided each with a laterally projecting yoke or strap 9. The straps of the several units are secured to a common ground bar 10 as by means of the screws 11. The ground bar may be provided with a suitable terminal, such as indicated at 12 'for connection with a grounding wire, or this ground bar may, if desired, be formed with a rearward extension 13 which may be in direct electrical connection with the inclosing box 14 as by means of the screw 15.
In the present construction, two sets of panel units are illustrated, those at the right being shown connected with a straight ground bar having the terminal 12 for connection of a wire therewith, those at the left being shown connected with a ground bar formed with a rearward grounding extension directly connected with the panel box.
The cover for the panel units is as previously stated, made in sections, the cover sections 16 for the upper and lower end panel units being constructed with up-turned end flanges 17 and with an up-turned side flange 18, the cover sections 19 for the intermediate panel units being formed with up-turned end flanges 20, said flanges cooperating as shown to form an inclosure about the edges of the sectional cover and hence about the built up panel units. The front 21 of the panel cabinet is usually provided with an opening therein corresponding to this lateral inclosure and this opening may be provided with a door such as indicated at 22.
The several cover sections are secured in place by devices such as the screws 23 which take into the screw seats 24 provided in the yokes or straps 9. Hence, in fastening each cover section in place it is by that very act automatically grounded or electrically connected with the grounding bar. 7
The invention it will be seen, provides a cover which is extensible in accordance with the building up of the panel board and which no matter how extended will always provide an inclosure about the exposed portions of the panel. Also the possibility of neglecting or failing to properly ground the sectional cover is done away with because of the fact that the simple act of seruring the-cover sections in place automatically connects them in proper grounding relation.
I claim 1. In a panel board, panel units assembled side by side into a built up panel board of the required size, a cover section over each up-turned edge flanges coiiperating to form an inclosure about the cover sections.
2. In a panel board, panel units assembled side by side into a built up panel board of the required size, cover sections over theend panel units, each having the ends and one side edge thereof provided with an up-turned flange and cover sections over the intermediate panel units hav ing end flanges coiiperating to form With the end and side flanges of the end cover sections a lateral inclosure about said cover sections.
