BAND FOR INFANTS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 11, 1191s.
Application filed September 17, 1918'. Serial No. 254,892.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELLA LOUISE SMITH,
. a citizen of the United States, residing at ban s binatlons, constructions and arrangements- Roanoke, in the county of Randolph and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bands for Infants, of which the following is a specification.
invention relates to improvements in for infants, and it consists in the comherein described and claimed.
An objectof my invention is to provide a band for newly born infants which is easily applied and removed, and which does not require the use of pins or simllar fastening means.
A further object of my invention 1s to provide an infants band Which is curved to fit the body of the infant, and which is provided with means for preventing the band from slipping u wardly or downwardly.
A further ObJQCt of my .inventlon 1s to provide a band of the type described whlch is readil adjustable to bodies of various sizes wit out im airing the-means for preventing the slipping of the band.
Other objects and advantages W111 appear in the following specification, and the novel features of the invention will be particularly pointed out in the appended clalm.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, in which Figure 1 isa plan view of the band;
Fig. 2 is a detailed view showing a portion of the band provided with darts whose edges are designed to be sewed together to provide a rounded central portlon;
Fig. 3 is a view showing the front of the 'band as applied to the body of an lnfant; and
Fig. 4 is a rear view of the band as applied to the infants body.
In carrying out my invention I provide a body portion 1 of any sultable materlal, such as linen or flannel, of the shape shown in the drawings. At each end of the body portion are two V shaped extensions such as those shown at 2 and 2 and 3 and 3 respectively. Sewed to the end of each'extension is a tying string 4 which is preferably made of tape. Near the base of the extensions 2 and 2. is a slit 5 extending transversely of the major dimension of the band,
while a similar slit 6 is at the opposite end and on the opposite side of the central axis. In makin the band, the darts 7 are provided at t ecentral portion thereof, as shown in Fig. 2, and the edges of these darts are sewed together, after which a reinforcng stn) 8 of tape or other suitable material, is sewe along the central portion from one edge of the band to the op osite edge. The completed band, it will be 0 served, 1s bowed :(fmttso as to conform to the body of the in- In applying the band the central portion thereof 1s laced over the abdomen of the infant, as's own in Fig. 2, wrapped around the body, one of the extensions being passed through the slit 6 (see Fig. 3) and another extension 3 being passed through the slit 5. The ends of the extensions are then brought together and tied by means of the tying strings 4 in the manner shown in Fig. 2. It will be observed that these extensions, and their tying strings, are above the central portion of the infants abdomen so as to prevent any injury thereto from rubbing or undue pressure.
A band constructed in accordance with my invention will neither sli up nor down, and thus obviates the chief ob3ection to the ordinary infants band. It is easily applied or removed, and may be adjusted to fit bodies of various sizes.
I am aware that infants bands have been made having extensions and slits, and I do not claim the same broadly. In the present instance, however, the placing of the slits at opposite ends of the band, instead of in alinement at one end, provides space for slits of greater length, so as to give greater 0 portunity for adjustment thus enabling t e band to be drawn up to fit the bodies of very small infants, or to be let out to fit the bodies of larger infants. Furthermore, it does not weaken the 'band as much as where these slits are in alinement.
I am also aware that bands have been formed by cutting the upper and lower edges thereof on a curve to provide for the bowing out of the band. Such bowing, however, only prevents the band from slipping in one ing to my invention is bowed to conform to the body of the infant and this, taken in connection with the fact that the tying strings are fastened above and below the center of direction, whereas the band formed'accordthe abdomen, prevents the slipping of the band either up or down, while at the same time forming a comfortable appliance, which obviates the use of pins or other retaining means.
I claim:
An infants band comprising a body portion having parallel sides, rovided with darts at the central portion t iereof extending inwardly from the sides, the edges of the darts being sewed together to provide a central bowed out portion, a pair of V shaped extensions at the opposite ends of the body portion, a tying string secured to the end of each extension, said body portion having transverse slits of a length suflicient to re ceive the widest part of said V shaped extension, one of said slits being disposed on one side of the central. longitudinal axis of the band near the base of one of said V shaped extensions, and the other slit being disposed on the opposite side of the longitudinal axis of the band, and of the central transverse axis near the base of one of the V shaped extensions at the opposite end of the band.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
ELLA LOUISE SMITH.
