Specification of Iletters Patent.
Patented m. 11, rate.
Application filed'July 1, '1918. Serial No. 242,720.
i To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, EUGENE Hroenv's, -a
- citizen of the United States, residing at the city and county of Jackson and State of Michigan, have lnvented certain new and .useful Improvements in Garages or Storage- Buildings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in garages or storage buildings.
The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide an improved garage or storage building of large capacity. Second, to provide an improved garage or storage building adapted for the housing of motor vehicles which has the equivalent of several stories withoutthe use of elevators.
Third, to provide an improved garage or storage building which permits of a motor vehicle being driven to or from its allotted space by the driver without the service of an attendant. I
,Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely. appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. clearly defined and pointed out in the claims. A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which:
Figure I is a detail front elevation of a building embodying the features of my invention.
Fig. II is 'a horizontal section thereof on a line corresponding to line 2-2 of Fig. III
Fig. III is'a detail vertical section on a line corresponding to line 3-3 of Fig. II.
Fig. IV is a horizontal section corresponding to that of Fig. II, showing another embodiment of my invention.
' Fig. V is a horizontal sectlon similar to Figs. II and IV showing still another em-.
' bodiment of'my invention.
several views.
' and concentric to the outer wall.
, In the drawing similar reference characters refer. to similar parts throughout the Referring to the drawing, the outer wall .1 is preferably circular although that is not an arbitrary requirement. I provide partition walls 2 and 3, also preferably circular On the The invention is and it is found that'this is outside of the partition wall 2 I provide an upward splral driveway 4 having an en-.
trance 5 through the doors 6. Between the door openings 10 communicating with the entrance and exit. At the right of theentrancedriveway is a room 11 which is adapted for storage or any other suitable purpose. v
I provide a series of spirally disposed stalls or storage spaces 12 having horizontal floors, the side walls 13 of which are in the' embodiment shown in Fig. II tangentially disposed relative to the upward driveway 4 facilitating entrance to and exit from these stalls as sharp turns are not required for entrance or exit. I
The outer partition wall 2 has door openings 14 therein affording access from the upward driveway to the downward driveway.
The space within the inner partition wall 3 has horizontal floors 15, the inner wall having door openings 16.0pposite the door openings 14 affording access to these rooms or spaces.
In the modification shown in Fig. IV, the spiral upward driveway I is located between the series of stalls or storage spaces of advantage where the size of the building will permit. a considerable storage space being secured by a relatively small increase in the dimensions of the building. In such a: construction a passageway 17 is left opposite the door openings 14.
In the modification shown in Fig. V the upward driveway 47 is adjacent the outer wall, the-storage spaces-or stalls being within the upward driveway. This is of advantage in certain situations. I
With the arrangement illustrated and described I secure a structure especially adapted as a garage having a large capacity and one which avoids the use of elevators as well as one in which it is entirely practicable for the ordinary driver to drive the car to his particular space or stall, all cars being accessible." An attendant, who is ordinarily necessary where cars are parked in a block template as I believe the disclosure made will enable those skilled in the art to which my invention relates to embody or adapt the same as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A building having a circular outerwall, a continuous spiral upward driveway, a continuous spiral downward driveway within said upward driveway, circular partition walls one of which is between the driveways and the other within the inner driveway, and spirally disposed stalls each opening into said upward driveway, the floors of said stalls being horizontal their side walls being disposed tangentially ofthe upward driveway, said partition walls having door openings therein affording access between the upward and downward driveways and with the space within the inner of the partition walls, such space having floors on a level with the driveways at said door openings.
2. A building having a circular outer wall, a continuous spiral upward driveway, a continuous spiral downward driveway within said upward driveway, circular partition walls one of which is between the driveways and the other within the inner driveway, and spirally disposed storage spaces each opening into said upward driveway, said partition walls having door openings therein affording access between the upward and downward driveways and with the space within the inner of the partition walls, such space having floors on a level with the driveways at said door openings.
3. building having and outer wall, a continuous spiral upward driveway, a continuous'spiral downward driveway within said upward driveway, partition walls one of which is between the driveways and the other within the inner driveway, and stalls opening into said upward driveway, the floors or said stalls being horizontal, their side walls being disposed tangentially of the upward driveway, said partition walls having door openings therein affording access between the upward and downward driveways and with the space-within the inner of the partition walls, such space having floors on a level with the driveways-at said .door openings.
4. A building having an outer wall, a con tinuous spiral upward driveway, a continuous spiral downward driveway within said upward driveway, partition walls one of which is between the driveways and the other within the inner driveway, and storage spaces each opening into said upward driveway, said partition walls having door openings therein affording access between the upward and downward driveways and with the space within the inner of the partition'walls, such space having floors on a level with the driveways at said door openings.
5. A building having an outer wall, a continuous spiral upward driveway, a con tinuous'spiral downward driveway within said upward driveway, a partition between the driveways, and spirally disposed stalls each opening into said upward driveway, the floors of said stalls being horizontal, their side walls being disposed tangentially of the upward driveway, said partitions having door openings therein afl'ording access between the upward and downward driveways.
6. A building having an outer wall, a continuous spiral upward driveway, a continuous spiral downward driveway within said upward driveway, a'partition between the driveways, and spirally disposed storage spaces each opening from said upward driveway, said partitions having door openings therein aifording access between the upward and downward driveways.
7. A building having a continuous spiral upward drivewayand a continuous spiral downward driveway, a partition wall between said driveways, and a series of spirally disposed storage spaces on each side of one of said driveways, said partition wall having door openings therein afiording access from one driveway to the other.
8. A building having a continuous spiral upward driveway and an independent cortinuous spiral downward driveway, there being means of access from one driveway to the other at intervals, and a series 01f spirally disposed storage spaces on the outer side of one of'said driveways, each storage space opening directly on the driveway.
9. A building having a continuous spiral upward driveway and an independent continuous spiral downward driveway, there being means of access from one driveway to the other at intervals, and a series of spirally disposed storage spaces on the inner side of one of said driveways, each storage space opening directly on the driveway.
10. A building having a continuous spiral upward driveway, an independent spiral downward driveway arranged one within the other, there being means of access from one driveway to the other at intervals, and
ingvupon one of said driveways the walls of which are tangential so that entrance there,-
to orexit thererrmnmay be had without a sharp turn.
upward drivevay and an'indepndent continuous spiral downward clnveway, and a 11. Abnilcling having'a continuous spiral series of spirally dispos ed storage spaces each opening (lirnctly upon one Oi" S21lLl10 driveways for entrance and exit. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two witnesses.
