i BUNDLING).
naegnoae.
Specification of Letters Patent.
rasantes Nev, ii, isis.,
Application led JannaryvlS, 191s. Serial No. 270,809.
To all whom t may-concern.'
Be i known that I, EMIL C. DANNER, a citizen of theUnited States, residing in the borough of Westmont, in the county of Cambria. and State of Pennsylvania, (Whose post-office address is Johnstown, Pennsylva- Ania,) have invented certain n'ew and useful Improvements in Bundling; and I do hereby, declare theL following to be afull, clear, and eXact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and'use thesama v My mventlon relates to improvements in means, method and bundles, particularly ofv certain kinds of steel products with special reference to what are known as rail anchors, each of which in general consists of a fiat piece of spring steel with the intermediate portion c ut away so as to form an approxn imately rectangular notch with 'longitudinally and laterally extending portions sur-k rounding substantially three sides of the same. Heretofore such vmaterial has been packed. loosely and. indiscriminately in boXes,-burlap or in casks, all of which is expensive and unsatisfactory for handling,
checking and counting, and the vpackages rmade in this wa Ainterlock and prevent relative disarrangev ment, this being accomplished on aspeclall 'cleats spaced apa are generally too heavy for one man to andle'without the use of mechanical appliances of Some kind.v
My improvement consists vin means for making neat and strong bundles of such ma-v \A terialsby nesting thel same togetherin a compact form whereby the diderent portions prepared table onplatfor'm provided wit e orgrooves for .the tie wires while a bundle is, being assembled, y after which the end-s -of the tie wires-are? brought' together and twisted, making a compact and secure package which canbe `handled b one 'm'axhqtakes up the minimum amount o room and is so strong that itwill not become broken in rough handlingv or` dropping. l
Having thus given a g planviewof the same portion of the table after piling oriassembling before the bundle is tied. Fig. 3^is 'a perspective View of the complete bundle after tying the same. Fig. 4; is a side elevation-of one of the rail anchor plates, and Fig. 5 is a to `plan view of an anchor plate.
eferring now to `the characters of refer-- ence on the drawings 1 is l a portion of the'top of the assembling table as viewedin plan, 2 .are cleats secured thereto spaced the rail anchors,
apart as shown toprovide two grooves 3 and l 4 adapted to receive the binding wires 5 and 6, and it will be readily understoodthat instead of using these cleats l may provide grooves in the body of the table itself., As illustrated in Fig. 3, the wires 6 are tied or twisted yin a lcoil or knot?, thus drawing them. firmly in place and similarly the wires 5 are tied or twisted in a knot 8, these wires, as noted, being located in" the reentrant angles at the side corners of the bunl dle and are thereby absolutely securefromdisplacement and also protected frombreakage `or wear, besides "Whichvfthe projecting ends of the knots or twists are protected by the outstanding portions `of the bundle so that .thesewillfnot catch in the clothing or hands of those handling them,`Y` nor' any other objects with which the contact. The 4special railfaneliorsgto be lbundled are indicated generally asa, cach pro# vided with a notch 10 or-ctaway portion',v
il 'being the main 1ngitndinal"portionl 1-3 onejof the projecting end,1poiftions`;."14A 'theother proj acting end portidnf, ltheinterior lmay come notch iin the `anchor'with the, inwardly prop jecting` portion 1 6 iadjaceint fthreto. The
rail anchors are nested togetherin vgroups or sets with their-sidesadjacent butY not necessarily .exactly parallel jon, laccount df .the
taper of the,anchprsffin1 general, these `being assembled in groups or sets consisting of a ilower course 17 with the notches-opening orextending upwardly and a superimposed course y18 with vtliefiotches `opening or ex-l {tendin downwardly, the projecting ends 13-'an ld'overlapping the outer lx'ncigitudi-V nally extendingportions 11, thusjsecurmg the plates Aof eaeh Icourse firmly together.,
The width ofthe upper course of4V plates 17 'is-'inade-jsiich that it fits with reasonable tightness within the space of the nothes of the course 18. A.number of these layers are im prepared and superimposed upon each other, each pair of two sets consisting prefion i Although I have shown tie Wires for secur-A ing the bundle together, I may use strips of board or similar material ,nailed or other- Wise secured together, with or Without band steel reinforcements.
Although I have described and illustrated y my 'invention in "considerabledetail, I do not Wish to be limited to the exact and specific details thereof as shown andl described, but may use such modifications in,
substitutions for, or equivalents thereof, as are embraced Within the scope of my inven.l
tion or as pointed out in the claims.
aving thus described my invention,
what I claim and desire to secure by Letters` Patent is 1. A bundle of rail anchors comprising' a se't of pieces, each hav-ing an intermediate notch therein of approximately rectangular outline assembled side byv side With the notchesl in substantial registry, a lset of their substantially registered notches exl 4tending in the opposite direction, so placed notched pieces similarly assembled With together that the laterally extending por- `tions of eachvset are adjacent to and adapted to contact with the outer side portions of the other set and means for securing the same in said relative positions.
2. A bundle of rail anchors comprising a set of pieces, each having an intermediate notch therein of approximately rectangular outline assembled side by side With` the notches in substantial registry, -a set Aoi?l lnotched pieces similarly assembled with their substantially registered' notches'extending in the opposite direction, so placed together that the inner edges of the longitudinal `portions areI superimposed and the laterally extending portions of each set are adjacent to and adapted to contact With the outer side portions ofthe other set, andmeans for securing same in said relative positions.v
3.4 A bundle of rail anchors comprising a'l set o pieces, each having an intermediate notch, assembled in substantial registry, Aav
similar set of, assembled pieces with their substantially registered notches extending in the' opposite direction, so placed together that the laterally extending portions .of each set are adjacent to and adapted to contact with the outer side portions of the other set, and means extending in the external rentrant angles for securing same in said relative positions.
In wltness'whereof I hereunto ailix my signature. ,I
EMIL C. BANNER.
