Description

1. IVIORAN.
Improvement in Cvh'urns.
N0.132,096. Patented0n.8, 18"121 UNITED STATES PATENT CEFIGE.
JOHN MORAN, OF MILLPOR'I, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHURNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 132,096, dated October 8, 1872.
To all 'whom it may concern:
represents a vertical central section of my improved churn, and Fig. 2 is a detached perspective view of the dashers and their staff.
Similar letters of reference in both of the figures are used in designation of corresponding parts. v f
This invention relates to an improved churn, the dasher-sta of which is rendered capable of detachment, whereby it may be readily removed from the churn and the casing thereof formed into two sections which will permit of the lever, dasher-staff, and dashers being removed simultaneously; and it consists of the constructing of the dasher-staff into two parts which may be readily connected together and disconnected, when desired; and, lastly, in form-ing the casing of the churn into sections in such a manner as that they may be separated and united with facility and for the purpose above stated, all constructed and arranged substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth and pointed out in the claim.
To enable others to make and use my invention, I willproceed to describe it.
In the annexed drawing, A refers to the lower section or body of the casing of the churn, and A to the upper section thereof, which is beveled in such a manner upon the inner circumference of its lower end as to fit iiush against the upper beveled portion of the former, and supplied with a flange or hoop, et, for assisting in retaining it upon the section A, the shape of said upper section being that of anginverted truncated cone, but to which no particular claim is made. B is the dasherstaff, upon the lower portion of which is cut a screw-thread to receive and permit of the vertical adjustment of the dashers C G, they being provided with threaded apertures for that purpose, whereby the said dashers may be brought nearer together, or placed further apart, whenever desired. The dasher-staii` B is also constructed in two parts, the upper end of the lower section or part being beveled and fitting within an A-shaped recess made in the lower side of the upper part of the said shaft. At the juncture of the two parts of the said shaft or staff a nut, b, is used, which iits a screw-thread cut upon both the parts abovenamed, and which enables the said parts to be connected and held together, the object of forming the said staff in two parts being to permit of the same being readily detached from its lever and taken out of the case or vessel A together with the dashers.
When it is desired not to disconnect the parts ofthe staff B in the removal of the same Y and the dashers, it is simply necessary to remove the upper section A of the case of the churn, when the said section together with the said parts, and the lever for operating the same, can be withdrawn.
D is a lever, having its fulcrum within a bifurcated bar of metal, d, fastened to the case A and connected at its lower or inner end in a suitable manner to the dasher-staff B. This lever is for the purpose of operating the dasher-staff. E is a cover for the churn, which rests upon the upper edge of the lower section A ofthe case of the churn.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, Aand desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. Ihe dasherstaff B, consisting of two parts, in combination with the nut b, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The case A A', shaft B, dashers C (l, and lever l), combined and arranged substantially as and for the purpose speciied.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name this 7th day of May, A. D. 1872, in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
W'itnesses: JOHN MORAN.
R. L. NICHOLS, D. W. CARPENTER.
