Description

H T. PRATT ,AND E'. C. WEST.
Patented Nov. 4, 1919.
J/VMENTE ED STATES P HAROLD THOMAS PRATT AND EDWARD COLEG-ATE WEST, OF OTTAWA, ONTARIO,
' CAN ADA. I
TOY AEROPLAN E.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented NOV. 4, 1919,
Application filed February 3, 1919. Serial No. 274,709.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HAROLD THoMAs PRATT and EDWARD CoLEcA'rE WEsT, subjects of the King of Great Britain, and resident of the city of Ottawa, in the Province of Ontario, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Aeroplanes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in toy aeroplanes, and the objects of the invention are to so design the aeroplane that the body or fuselage may be straddled by a child in such a manner that the child may engage its feet with the ground and thus propel or drive the aeroplane forwardly, to provide means for guiding the aeroplane, to simplify the construction and generally to render the aeroplane attractive, light, yet durable and not liable to go out of repair.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists essentially of the improved construction particularly described as set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of our toy aeroplane.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.
In the drawings like characters of reference refer to like parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the improved toy aeroplane comprising a fuselage or body portion 10 which is substantially rectangular in cross section, being provided at the front end with a propeller 11 pivotally mounted thereon, the rear end having vertically and horizontally disposed vanes 12 which have the appearance of a rudder.
Adjacent to the front end of the fuselage or body portion a pair of planes 13 are arranged in spaced relation, giving the machine the characteristics of a biplane, and the planes are held in the desired position by uprights 14.
The lower plane 13 is located beneath the body portion 10 and suitably secured thereto. A spindle 15 extends through the planes 13 and body portion, and is formed with a lower bifurcated end 16 to which a pair of ground wheels 17 are pivotally attached. A washer 18 is located between the upper end of the bifurcated portion 16 and the lower plane 13 and will thus reduce any wear which would otherwise-take place on the lower plane 13.
The upper endof the spindle 15 is provided with a transversely disposed handle 19 rigidly attached thereto, so that the spindle 15 may be rotated, causing the wheels 17 to be guided in a direction in which it is desired the aeroplane A should travel.
Toward the rear end of the machine a spindle 20 passes through the body portion 10, and is suitably secured thereto, and the spindle is formed with a lower bifurcated end 21 on which the ground wheel 22 is pivotally mounted.
When the toy is in use the user straddles the body portion 10 and grips the handle 19 with his hands.
The user then engages the ground with his feet and thus propels the aeroplane forwardly, and the direction of travel of the aeroplane can be controlled by rotating the spindle 15 in the desired direction to allow t e wheels 17 to conform to any curve in the path of travel.
During the forward motion of the machine the propeller 11 will rotate due to wind pressure. The aeroplane may be painted in any suitable color, preferably a battleship gray and may be rendered attractive by having bulls eye of other colors painted thereon, such as will attract the child. a
As many changes could be made in the above construction, and many apparently Widely different embodiments of my invention, within the scope of the claim, constructed without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specification and drawings, shall be interpreted as illustrative andtnot in a limiting sense.
What we claim as our invention is:
A to aeroplane, comprising a rectangular bo y portion designed to be straddled by the user whereby the aeroplane can be manually propelled, bi-planes on the front of the body portion, rudder planes secured to the rear of the body portion, a spindle passing through the rear of the body portion formed with a lower bifurcated end, a ground Wheel pivotally mounted on the bifurcated end, a spindle extendin through the body portion and the front p anes and formed with a lower bifurcated end, a pair In witness whereof we have hereunto of ground Wheels plvotally attached to the set our hands 1n the presence of a witness.
bifurcated end, a Washer between the bifurcated portion of the spindle and the HAROLD THOMAS PRATT. lower of the front planes, and a transverse] y EDWARD COLEGATE WEST. disposed handle rigidly attached to the last Witness:
said spindle. JAMES MITCHELL.
