To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER ZSURKA, a citizen of Hungar residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Permutation- Locks, of which the following is a specification.
Theprimary object of the invention is to provide a locking means especially designed for handbags and satchels whereby a person familiar with the lock may readily operate the same without employing a key and any other person would be prevented from unlocking the mechanism.
.A further object of the invention is to provide a permutation lock for handbags whereby the bolt of the lock is adapted for retention in either its locked or unlocked position until a predetermined combination has been turned upon the permutation members.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a permutation lock for handbags that is simple in construction as well as being strong and durable whereby the bag may be locked closed for preventing theft of the contents thereof.
The invention will be fully described in connection with the accompanying drawings and in which like'reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views,

My invention is designed for employment with handbags such as the bag 10 and similar receptacles having angle- iron frame members 11 and 12 hinged together as at 13 at the opposite ends of the bag. The frame member 12 is adapted to close within the member 11 and springs 14: are provided adjacent the hinges 13 to automatically open the bag when the lock thereof is released.
A lock is mounted upon the top of the frame member 11 provided with a casing 15 having a bolt 16 slidably mounted therein. A pin 17 upon the bolt 16 extends through a slot 18 in the casing 15 and is provided with a disk 19 upon its outer end seated upon the said casing. A keeper or hook 20 projects inwardly from the frame 11 adapted to be engaged by a locking lug 21 of the bolt 16 when the bolt as well as the disk 19 are at one extremity of movement as illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawings. A swinging belt or handle 22 is provided for the bag attached in the usual manner as at 23 to the frame member 11 while a tab or finger grasping member 21 is carried by the frame member 12 pivoted thereto outwardly of the keeper hook 20. A cup 25 is journaled within the casing 15 by means of a pin 26 extending through the casing and having a permutation disk 27 upon the top thereof spaced from the aforementioned disk 19. The cup 25 is provided with a side notch 28 adapted for the reception of a foot 29 of the bolt 16 therethrough when the permutation characters or letters 30 upon the disk 27 are set in a predetermined position. It will be evident that when the foot 29 is in alinement with the notch 28, the bolt 16 may be retracted by means of the disk 19 as shown in Fig. 3 but when the cup 27 is slightly turned so that the foot 29 cannot enter the notch 28, the bolt 16 is retained in its locking position as shown in Fig. 4.
. A relatively shallow cup 31 is mounted within the casing 15 adjacent the opposite end thereof from the cup 25 and is secured to a pin 32 journaled through the casing with a permutation disk 33 upon the top of the casing spaced from the disk 19. An arm 34 at the opposite end of the bolt 16 from the foot 29 has a terminal flang 35 adapted to fit over the edge of the cup 31 restrained by the side thereof when the bolt 16 is locked as shown in Fig. 4. Permutation characters 37 are provided upon the disk 33 and when set at a predetermined point, the notch 36 is brought adjacent the flange 35 for permitting the flange to pass outwardly therethrough when the bolt 16 is moved to its unlocked position. When the bolt is unlocked, the disk 33 may be slightly turned for engaging the flange against the periphery of the disk 31 which retains the bolt unlocked as shown in Fig. 3. A spring 38 connects the lug 21 with the pin 32 so that upon turning the disk 33 when the mechanism is unlocked until the flange 35 registers with the notch 36, the said spring 38 automatically throws the bolt 16 with the lug 21 in its locking position. The diski33 is then slightly turned which prevents the flange 35 from leaving the cup 31 and the disk 27 is slightly turned for engaging the end of the foot 29 against the periphery of the cup 25 and the mechanism remains locked until the permutation disks 33 and 27 are again turned for permitting the retraction of the bolt 16 by pressure exerted upon the disk 19. The lug 21 extends through a slot 4-1 in the member 11 for engaging the hook 20 when the frame members 11 and 12 are closed. The cup 25' is relatively deeper than the cup 31 and while of the same general appearance, it will be seen that the said cups are oppositely positioned, that is, the cup 25 opens downwardly toward the member 11 and theshallow cup 31 opens upwardly toward the top of the casing 15 when the bag 10 is in its normal upright position.
Arrows 39 may be indicated upon the casing 15 and when predetermined letters such as Z are positioned adjacent the arrows 39, the notches 28 and 36 will be positioned for permitting the free movement of the bolt 16. The intermediate disk 19 is not apermutation member but is preferably journaled upon the pin 17 and also provided with characters 40 giving the same appearance as the permutation disks 30 and 33. A. person familiar with the lock may readily position the permutation disks for permitting the retraction of the bolt 16 but a person unfamiliar with the lock structure would have great difficulty in releasing the locking lug 21 from the hook 20 for opening the handbag 10.
What I claim as new is 1. A lock comprising a casing, a bolt slidably positioned therein having end projections, a sliding disk for the bolt outwardly of the casing, a locking lug projecting inwardly from the bolt, a cup journaled within the casing having the outer side thereof within the path of movement of the adjacent bolt end when the lug is in its locking position and provided with a side notch through which the adjacent end of the bolt is adapted to pass when the cup is in a predetermined position, to hold said cup non-rotatable, a permutation disk outwardly of the casing secured to said cup and a permutation-controlled cup associated with the other end of the bolt and being capable of rotary movement with the bolt positioned therein.

A look comprising a casing, a bolt slidably positioned therein having end projections, a sliding disk for the bolt outwardly of the casing, a locking lug projecting inwardly from the bolt, a cup journaled within the casing having the outer side thereof within the path of movement of the ad j acent bolt end when the lug is in its locking position and provided with a side notch through which the adjacent end of the bolt is adapted to pass when the cup is in a predetermined position to be held non-rotative, a permutation disk outwardly of the casing securedto said cup, a relatively shallow cup within the casing adjacent the opposite end of the bolt from the first named cup adapted for engagement with the adjacent end of the bolt when the bolt is retracted entirely out of the cup, thesaid shallow cup having a side notch through which the adjacent end 01 the bolt is adapted to pass when the shallow cup is in a redetermined position, a permutation mem er for the shallow cup exteriorly of the casing and means adapted automatically to move the locking lug to its locking position toward said shallow cup when the notch of said shallow cup is brought into registry with the adjacent end of the bolt with the locking lug completely positioned therein, the bolt and cups extending in the same longitudinal plane with the cups positioned outwardly of the bolt.
