HENRY R. HEYL, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO AMERICAN PAPER-BOX-MACHINE COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 132,074, dated October 8, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY R. HEYL, of the city and county of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Boxes, to be made of paper, pasteboard, thin wood, or other flexible material,
.of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists in the employment of inner flaps, which extend to the top of the box or cover, and are surrounded by outer flaps, which meet flush with each other and are connected together and with the inner flaps by horizontal staples covering the lines of junction of the outer flaps, the staples being clinched on the inside of the box. The box and cover are formed in precisely the same manner, and a description of one will answer for both.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a plan view of a paper-blank adapted for the formation of a box; Fig. 2 is a sectional view of a box made according to.my invention on the line 00 a, Fig. 3; Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line y y, Fig. 2, showing the box and, cover when the latter is placed on the box 3 and Fig. 4 is an end view of the box. I
A, Fig. 1, represents a paper-blank from which the box is constructed, made of a single piece of paper or other material, and out of a rectangular form, in which slits b b are made to form the flaps. The flaps a a are bent or folded perpendicularly to the plane of the blank A, and extend to the top of the box or cover to form the inner flaps. The parts m m which form the sides of the box or cover are then similarly folded or bent, and the outer flaps b b folded around the up-turned flaps a a so as to be perpendicular to the sides m m. The outer flaps b b are so formed that when folded over they will not overlap, but will be flush with each other, and extend to the top of the box or cover. Staples 0 0 are then applied horizontally, or nearly so, and are made to pass through both of the outer flaps b b and also through the inner flap a, and are clinched on the inside of the box or cover.
By making the outer flaps b b flush with each other, in lieu of overlapping one. over the other, I am enabled to construct a neater, smoother, and better box or cover, as there are no projecting edges formed, which there would be if the outer flaps b b overlapped each other; and by inserting the staples horizontally, or at a small angle with the plane of the horizon, I am enabled to make each staple pass through both of the outer flaps b b, near their line of junction, and also through the inner flap a, which could not be. accomplished if the staples were inserted vertically, or nearly so.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by vLetters Patent, is-
A box or cover having mner flaps extending from the bottom to the top, and outer flaps extending from the sides to the center, said flaps being united together by staples inserted horizontally, and each staple passing through both the outer flaps at their line of junction, and also through the inner flaps, as described.
