IMPROVEMENT IN POCKET-BOOKS TO PREVENT THE DESTRUCTION 0E PAPERS B.Y FIRE.
' Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 132,068, dated October 8, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, EDWARD W. GLOVER, of Maiden, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, and GEORGE L. DA- MON, of Cambridge, in the county and State aforesaid, have invented a certain new and useful Improved Pocket-Book; and that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying plate of drawing.
The object of this invention is to provide a pocket-book which, if within a fireproof safe exposed to fire, will be proof against destruction by the fire or heat, although the interior of the safe should be substantially destroyed.
This invention consists of a pocket-book made of linen or cotton duck, or other suitable cloth, (linen-duck being preferable,) prepared with a solution of tungstate of soda or other material or materials suitable to render the pocket-book proof against fire and heat.
In the accompanying plate of drawing our improved pocket-book is illustrated, Figure 1 being a face view with the pocket-book opened, and Fig. 2 a side view of it closed.
A, in the drawing, represents a pocket-book constructed of pockets B, closed at each end and along one side, but open at the other side, and the series adapted to fold down closely one upon another, and then to have their open fastening-strap a as and in the ordinary manner.
The pocket-book A, in its several parts, is made of linen or cotton duck or other cloth, linen-duck being preferable, which is prepared by saturation or otherwise with a material or materials suitable to render it substantially proof against fire or heat; or, in other words,
sufficiently so that with a pocket-book made from it within a'fire-proof safe exposed to fire,
the pocket-book would be safe against destruction, although the interior of safe should be virtually consumed.
The material which we prefer to use is tungstate of soda dissolved in water. of alum may be employed and good results effected.
The cloth may be prepared after manufacture into a pocket-book; but it is preferable to prepare it when in a sheet-form, as then a smoothing-iron can be readily used to smooth it.
It is not intended to limit ourselves to the use of the particular materials herein specified for rendering a pocket or other equivalent book proof against fire, as others may be used but tungstate of soda is most efi'ectual, and cloth as the sheet material is preferable, for it does not warp or blister; but other sheet material may be employed, as, for instance, leather.
Having thus described our invention, What we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture, a pocket or other equivalent book made of cloth or other sheet material that is rendered fireproof, substantially as and for the purpose described.
The above specification of our invention signed by us this 12th day of April, A. D. 1872.
