INDOOR-BASE-BALL GAME.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 4, 1919.
Application filed May 2, 1917. Serial No. 156,033.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAMl L. Dn HAVEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at 540 Wabash Ave., Wichita, in the county of Sedgwick and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Indoor- Base-Ball Game, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in toys and more particularly to childrens games, and has for its object to provide a novel, simple, and entertaining base-ball game adapted to be played indoors and to mechanically simulate certain features of the real national game.
With the above and other objects in view my invention consists in the combination, arrangement, and details of construction disclosed in the drawings and specification and then more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings, wherein similar reference characters designate similar parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a top plan view of my invention,
Fig. 2 is an end elevation thereof with one wall removed therefrom to disclose the interior of the game inclosure,
Fig. 3 is a fragmental view of the bottom of my invention showing a turntable to be described,
Fig. A is a detail plan view of the projector mechanism, partly broken away,
Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the parts shown in Fig. 4,
gig. 6 is a longitudinal sectional view, an
Fig. 7 is a cross-sectional view.
In the drawings which are merely illustrative of my invention A designates a suitable casing or inclosure the bottom of which is designated B. A longitudinal guide is provided which consists of a central main body portion sloping from high at the rear to low at the front of the inclosure, the side portions P of this guide sloping upwardly in opposite directions from the central main body portion. This assures that a ball will roll down the incline toward initial position. The top, sides, and ends of the inclosure may consist of open-work walls, as illustrated at E to permit observation of the various movements of the game. Mounted so as to project forwardly of the front and rear walls of the inclosure are the catch receptacles D and D respectively, the catch receptacles D D not having any bottom thereon. Formed on the bottom of the inclosure in back of the ball projector to be described, is a ball retaining depression F in which the ball is to be placed so as to be positioned immediately above the ring H of the projector lever C, so that this ball will readily be seated upon this ring H. This projector lever G has an L-shaped arm I which is formed at its free end with an integral crank a. The arm I is journaled in said inclosure in such a manner that its crank will be disposed externally of said inclosure where the same may be readily grasped. A pin J is formed upon the arm I, and a connecting rod a is pivotally secured to said pin J at one end and is pivotally secured at its opposite end to a bellcrank lever g fixed upon a shaft K upon which is secured immediately in front of the catch receptacle D a turntable b. A pin L projects through an arcuate slot M formed upon the turntable to limit the distance which the turntable will rotate. Springs h are fixedly secured at one end and at their free ends they are secured respectively, to the opposing ends of the bell-crank g. Mounted upon the turntable is a figure B of a batter with his arms holding the bat in a position to strike the ball when the turntable is revolved.
It will be seen that when the crank is taken hold of and turned this will cause the rotation of the arm I of the projector, and as this arm turns the connecting arm or rod a is pushed so as to turn the bell-crank lever g and with it the turntable b with the batter thereon. The turntable will revolve against the tension of the springs h, and when arm I turns the ring H is carried upwardly and forwardly and the ball 0 is projected or thrown forwardly in the direction of the bottom at about the exact moment that the batters arm moves to hit the ball. When the ball happens to be struck the force may project the ball back again to its initial position, but the ball may pass the batter, when projected forwardly and find lodgment in the catch receptacle D whence it will drop back upon the inclined bottom of the guide.
Numerous modifications may be resorted to in practice without departing in principle from the details of construction herein disclosed.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new and Wish tosecure by Letters Patent, is
In a device of the kind described, in combination, a casing, an inclined bottom therein having a ball-retaining depression therein at the base of said inclined bottom, a shaft journaled transversely in said casing, a crank arm on said shaft moving vertically, a ring formed upon said crank arm upon Which the ball is adapted to seat, a crank formed upon said shaft for turning the same, a turntable at the other end of said inclined bottom, a figure of a batter thereon With outstretched arms, a connecting rod connecting said turntable and said shaft for revolving said turntable as said shaft revolves, and means for automaticallyreturning said turntable, when pressure is removed from said crank.
