Description

W. BROWN.
Improvement in Window-Frames and Sashes.
No. 132,()50. Patented Oct. 3, 1872.
'y a I /4 z fl a,
witnes ses v hwentor dt i I WILLIAM BROWN, OF DINGANNON, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN WINDOW FRAMS AND SASHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 132,()50, dated October e, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM BROWN, of Duncannon, in the County of Perry and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window Frames and Sash; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and. exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawing and to the letters ot' reference marked thereon making a part of this specifi-- cation.
The object of my invention is to conceal the pulleys and cords used for balancing windowsash, for the purpose of giving a finer finish to the window; and the nature of my invention consists in thin strips or slats grooved lon gitudinally, making recesses for the cords, said slats being laid over the cords from the top of the frame to a little belowthe top of the lower sash and of metallic sash-guides fixed at the bottom of the sash and projecting about a qu'arter of an inch, or equal to the thickness of the said slats, all of which will be herein- W after more fully set forth.
i Iu order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a front view of a window-frame with sash, the frame being partly in section; Fig. 2 is a side view of one of the sash; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view, showing the inner side of one of the strips' or slats,
A represents the window-frane provided as well as the pulleys, are eXposed to view on both sides of the frame. To obviate this, and thereby give a better finish to the windowframe, I use thin strips or slats G, which are grooved longitudinally on the inner sides, as
shown in Fig. 3.' Oneof these strips or slats is laid over each cord a from the top of the frame and extending to a little below the top of the lower sash; The sashes D D are, of course, to be made so much narrower than the inside of the frame as" will compensate for the thickness of one of 'these strips or slats on each side. At the lower end on each side of each sl at isa metallic projection, d, to which the end of the cord'ais attached, said projections being of the 'same thickness as the strips or slats G, and forming guides for the sash so that they will move perpendicularly up and down without Wabbling. The strips or slats G completely 'hide the otherwise exposed cords and pulleys, giving a better appearance to the window; y
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The longitudinally-grooved strips or slats Gr placed in a Window-hame over the cords and pulleys of the sash-balance, substautially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The combination of the longitudinallygrooved strips or slats Gr and the metallic guides d, when construoted and arranged substantiall'y as and for the purposes herein set forth.
Intestinony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 19th (lay of February, 1872.
WM. BROWN. Witnesses GEO. F. RoBINsoN,
S. L. JENNINGS.
