sntnnnvnmne CHAIR.
insonne.'
rcitizen of Russia, residing at Harrison,
county of Hudson, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful 1mprovements in Self-Leveling Chairs, ofv
' which the following isla specification.
This invention has for its object to vprovide a chair the seat of whiohwill maintaina level position irrespective or" the movement Y of its supports.
This and other objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which- Figure 1 is a top plan view of a chair made in accordance with the invention, the cover or seat being removed, and
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken substantially on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings in detail, a stand 10 rests upon integrally formed supports 11, curved and spread at their feet 12, which may be provided with casters or spherical contacting elements 13, so that the article may be readily moved from place to place as desired.
The upper end of the stand 10 is bell-muzzled outwardly as at 14, and formed integrally therewith are lateral plate extensions 15, disposed over the supports 11.
Secured to the inner smaller art of the frame 10, are brackets 16, from which extend arms 17, converging inward and merging with a hub 18, containing a semi-spherical' recess 19, in its Lupper part, while extending therebelow 1s a conical opening 20, through which passes a bar 2l, having' secured on its lower end a pendulous weight 22, movable freely between the supports 11.
A spherical element 23 is fixed to the bar 21, the same resting in the seat 19, and is normally drawn downward by the weight 22 and also by the effect of a coiled compression spring 25, held between a xed collar 26, secured to the bar 21, and a loose washer 27 pressed against the hub 18 by the spring. Carried at the upper end of the bar 21 is a plate having arms 28 held by the nut 29 and engaged at the ends of the arms are forked brackets 30, in which are mounted rollers 31, the same resting upon a washerlike disk 32, the'upper surface of which is substantially level with the hub 18.
' Specification of Letters fatent.
Patented N ov. 4, 1919.
Application filed May 21, 1919. Serial No. 298,727..
The disk 32 is supported upon inturned feet V33, formed with vertically disposedV rectangular bars 34,'turned horizontally outward at 35, and then downward at 36, parallel with the. elements 34, and iinally turned at right angles forming elements 37, having thickened hubs 38, the elements 37 being disposed directly` below the extensions l5 of the frame. Y Y
Secured to the supports 11 are vertical brackets 40, having heads 41, in which are semi-spherical recesses 42, `receptive of vthe spheres`43, held in position by the caps 44. Extending rods 45, encircled by the coils of compression springs 46, abutting against w-ashers 47, loosely encircling the rods at one end, and other washers 48 at the other end, which are held by collars 49 pinned to the lower extremities of the rods 45.
Engaged with one of the supports 11 is a foot rest l50, while a back (not shown) may be secured to the chair seat 52, secured to the horizontal elements 35.
1f the device is to be used as a table only, the foot rest 50 may be omitted and a table top of any desired character applied to the elements 35.
1n operation, the parts having been assembled as indicated, if the supporting surface upon which the terminals 12 rest should be inclined as for instance the deck of a ship, the weight 22 in maintaining its center of gravity directly below the center of the sphere 33, tends to keep the plate 28 level, causing pressure of the rollers 31 uponv the disk 32 upon one side or the other, which, being transmitted through the frame elements 34 to 37 inclusive, compresses the springs 46 on the high side of the device, maintaining the seat 52 substantially level, irrespective of the direction in which the supporting surface may assume.
Having thus described my invention and set forth the manner of its construction, application and use, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-v down from the spheres 43 areV with a seat, a supporting frame therefor,
vand a rigid stand supported upon a Ysurface, of resilient connections between said stand and said frame, a pendulum, a rod operated thereby, a spider plate carried'at the upper end of said rod, rollers mounted in said spider plate, and a disk carried by v end of said ban-of a plate spider carried on tensions, a hub carried by said stand, said l (hub 'having a spherical seat, a sphere restf 1n the seat, a bar iixedinsaid sphere, and
ino' a vbveighted pendulum Yattached to the lower tbe-upper end of said bar, rollers mounted in the extremities of said plate, a-movable frame resiliently engaged With the extensions oi' said stand, a disk carried in the inner portion of said movable frame upon which said rollers rest, and a seat carried by said `frame Gop'ies Vof this patent may be obtained for lrest uponV said vdisk` whereby signature.
so as to be maintained substantially level irrespective of tbe positiono'l said stand.
3. In a self leveling chair or the like, the combination with a' `stand, Weight supported tounove universally therein, a frame re'siliently engagedV with said stand, said frame being adapted to support aseat, aqdisk carried by said ra'ine, 'a spider mounted on tlie suspending element Yo1"- said Weiglit, and rollers journaled in said Yspidenadapted'to Weight moves ironia vertical position, said frame is 4caused-to yield and Vremain level irrespective of tbe position ofJsaid stand Y ln testimony whereof have aHiXed myV JUsTiNs PAKsTAs.v
