Referring to the drawings, `A represents a rail of a track, and B the improved signal attached thereto. bar of iron or like material `comprising a base portionlO, carrying an upwardly and angularly disposed tubular arm 11, provided with a set screw 12 extendingthrough the wall andnear the top thereof.` The base 10 terminates atthe end in aV lJ-shaped iiange 13 adaptedto embrace one edge of the lower flange of the rail A, the saidbase being `pro` hereafter. Operativelymounted on the base 10 is a clamping'member 15, havingthat edge adjacent to the raillA' offset so'th'at it willening member having its other end "upturned as shown at 16 and provided with an offset tongue 17 adapted to slidably engagejwith the slot 14A and embrace one end thereof'. This clamping member is provided intermediate of its length with a slot 18 which slidablyengages with the bolt 19 adapted to secure the said clamping member in the desired position. f
Y Slidably mounted in the tubular member 11 is a rod 2O which may be secured at the `desired height" by tightening the set screw 12 thereon, the upper end of the rod being bent over as shown at 21 to-form a U-shaped lamp supporting member 22 which is arranged infront of the metallic flag or disk 23 secured to the said rod.
This disk 23 is provided with a peripheral recess 24 which embraces the lateral edges of the offset portion 21 and is further provided with a concentric orifice 25 with which the bolt '26 passing through the rod 20 is adapted to engage.
When the signal is in use the U-shaped end 13 of the base 10 is engaged with the inner edge ofthe lower iiange of the rail A while the clamping member 15 is adjusted This signal consists of ay so that it engages the outer edge of the said flange with the end of thesaid clamping member abutting the web of the rail. The bolt 19 is now tightened so securing the clamping member in the desired position to rigidly support the signal from the rail.
The type of flag 'to' be utilized is now placed upon the rod 20 with the bolt 26 passing therethrough, and the peripheral recess 24 engaging with the odset portion 2l, whereupon the rod 20 is elevated to the desired extent andthe set screw l2 is tightened, completing the assembly of the signal.
To prevent the rod 20 from being inadvertently withdrawn romthe tubular arm 1l, provide a iiange 27 on the rod adapted to engage with the inturned upper end of the said arm if the arm is elevated to itsjeX- treme upper position, butl it will be understood that when in operation the set screw 12 will maintain the rod 20 rigidly in position and so prevent the flag 23 from being rotated parallel to the track due to wind or other pressure. a v
For night use or foggy weather, a lamp of the proper color is suspended or hung from the hook 2201i that side facing they direction fromwhich the train is approaching so that in double track operation of the type above described, trains'V on thev clear line arey not held up or delayed.
It `will Kbe appreciated that by offsetting the tubular a'rm 11, the metallic flagV 23 will be maintainedclear of the railway track,
Vwhich at all times remains operative while at the same time the iiag is so prominently situated that it will be readily recognized by the engineer oi the approaching trains.
From this description it will be seen that Copies of this patent may he obtained` fo'r I have invented a signal which may be attached to a rail with a minimum oi time and labor and will then be maintained in such a position that the engineer of a train is always notified of the state oi the track, the said signal not being liable to be displaced or blown down, or trailing in the wind and in which the'n'ietallic flag may be readily interchanged to suit the requirements of the railway system. y
As many changes could' be 4'made in the above description and many apparently widely diierent embodiments of my invention within the scope of theV claim constructed without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specification and drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.

A railway signal comprising a supporting member having its base portion passing under and secured to one side of a rail and having flag carrying lmeans Aon .the other side of the rail and a member` slidably held on the flag sideo the "base portion for iurther securing the support to the rail, one end of the slide being bent to lit the fiange of the rail and the other end beingupturned to form. a finger held and a downwardly offset tongue on said slide Vadapted. to slidably engage with a slot inthe base portion for limiting the movement of the slide in one direction in relation to the base portion, substantially as described. f
