Be it known that I, 'FREDERICK L. A. STINDT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Tuckahoe, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Core-Pulling Machine, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to the manufacture of hollow rubber bodies such as are used in the manufacture of hot water bottles, douche bags .and like articles, made hollow over a core and pressed exteriorly in dies.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved core pulling machine arranged to enable the workman to readily and quickly remove the core from the hollow body after the latter is fashioned in the dies. Another object is to provide a core pulling machine which is simple and durable in construction and easily actuated without requiring unduephysical exertion on the part of theworkman.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the core pulling machine with the core and the rubber body thereon in position, part` of the rubber body being shown in section;

In the manufacture of hollow .rubber bodies, such as are used for makinghot water bottles, douche bags and like articles having a contracted neck and mouth, it is customary'to fashion the hollow body overa core by the use of dies while the rubber is in a warm condition. After the fashioning operation is completed, the hollow body with its core therein is removed from the dies and in order to withdraw the core from the hollow body an operator uses a stick, rendered slippery by the application of soap or like .Specification of Letters Patent.

material, and pushes the same through the mouth into the hollow body, first over one side of the core and then over the other side thereof, to `loosen the body from the core. Vhen this has been done the mouth of the body is stretched widthwise of the core to allow of conveniently withdrawing the core from the body. In order to accomplish this operation quickly and effectively use is made of the core pulling machine presently described in detail.
On a suitably constructed framework 10 is mounted a table 11 provided with guideways 12 in which is mounted to slide a carriage 13, preferably made of wood and having runners 14 mounted to travel on the top of the table 11, as plainly indicated in Fig. 2. The rear end of the carriage 13 is provided with raised flanges 15 for the bottom of the hollow body 20 to abut against, the said hollow body 2O containing a flat core 2l having a conical portion 22 extending` through the mouth 23 of the hollow body 20 provided with the usual contracted neck 24. The conical portion 22 of the core 20 terminates in a flat member 25 adapted to rest and to slide on members 26 attached to the table 11 and extending above the same. The carriage 13 with the hollow body 2O and its core 21 therein is normally in a rearmost position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, and in order to move the carriage 13 and the body 20 and its core 21 forward use is made of a rope or other flexible connection 30 attached to the under side of the carriage and extending over the `uide pulleys 31aiid 32 journaled on theta le 11. The rear end of the flexible connection 30 is attached to a spring 33 fastened to the framework 10 and the forward end of the flexible connection 30 is attached to a treadle 34 under the control of an operator standing in front of the machine. When the operator presses the treadle 34, the flexible connection 30 imparts a forward sliding movement to the carriage 13 and the parts held thereon and when the treadle is released the spring 33 acting on the flexible connection 30 pulls the latter and the carriage 13 as well as the treadle 34 back to the normal position shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
Over the cone-shaped portion 22 of the core 21 project the ends of stretching fingers 40 and 41 diverging from their points toward the front end of the machine and the terminals of the stretching fingers 40 and 41 are at the entrance to the mouth 23 of the hollow body at the time the parts are in the position illustrated in the drawings. The stretching fingers 40 and 41 are pro vided with side-wise extending bases 42 and 4 3 bolted or otherwise secured to slides 44 and 45 mounted to slide transversely in suitable guideways 46 and 47 secured on the top of the table 11. The slides 44 and 45 are provided at their under sides with threaded lugs 50 and 51 in which screw the right and left- hand threads 52 and 53 of a screw rod 54 mounted to turn in suitable bearings 55 and 56 arranged on the under side of the table 11. One end 60 of the screw rod 54 is made polygonal and is engaged by a crank 61 under the control of the operator to permit the latter to turn the screw rod 54 with a view to move the lugs 50 and 51 and consequently the slides 44, 45 and the stretching fingers 40 and 41 from each other after the carriage 13 has been moved forward and the stretching fingers 40 and 41 have passed through the mouth 23 into the hollow body 20 on top of the fiat core 21. It is under stood that when the stretching fingers 4() and 41 extend into the hollow body and the stretching fingers are moved sidewise apart then the mouth 23 and the neck 24 of the hol low body 20 is stretched widthwise of the core 21 to the full width of the latter to permit the operator taking hold of the core member 25 to pull the core 21 out of the hollow body. When this has been done, the operator turns the crank 61 in the opposite direction to move the fingers 40 and 41 toward each other thus relaxing the neck 24 and the mouth 23 of the hollow body 2O to permit such neck and mouth to reassume their normal position owing to the resiliency of the rubber of which the body is made.
From the `foregoing it will be seen that on moving the carriage forward the stretching fingers 40 and 41 pass through the mouth 23 of the hollow body 2O into the neck 24 thereof and owing to the converging relation of the stretching fingers 40 and 41 the mouth 23 and the neck 24 receive a preliminary stretching widthwise of the flat core 21. 0n subsequently moving the stretching fingers 40 and 41 apart a final stretching of the mouth 23 and neck 24 widthwise of the core 21 takes place until the side walls of the mouth 23 are approximately in register with the side edges of the core 21 to allow movement and withdrawal of the core 21 from the hollow body 20.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Let* ters Patent 1. A core pulling machine, comprising a movable support for a hollow rubber body with the core therein, stretching means adapted to pass into the open end of the body, means to move the said support and the said stretching means one toward the other to pass the stretching means into the hollow body, and means to actuate the stretching means to widen the open end of the hollow body in the direction of the width of the core to allow withdrawal of the latter from the hollow body.
2. A core pulling machine, comprising a carriage adapted to support a hollow rubber body with the core therein, stretching members adapted to pass into the mouth of' the hollow body on pulling the carriage toward the stretching members, and means moving the stretching members apart to stretch the mouth of the body for the withdrawal of the core.
3. A core pulling machine, comprising a carriage adapted to support a hollow body with the core therein, actuating means under the control of an operator for imparting movement to the said carriage, stretching lingers adapted to pass into the hollow body on moving the carriage toward the said stretching ngers, slides carrying the said stretching fingers and adapted to move toward and from each other at an angle rela; tive to the movement of the carriage, and means moving the said slides from each other after the fingers are in engagement with the said body to stretch the mouth of the latter widthwise of the said core to allow of withdrawing the latter from the body.
4. A core pulling machine, comprising a carriage adapted to support a hollow body with the core therein, actuating means under the control of an operator for imparting movement to the said carriage, a rest for the outer end of the core to rest and to slide on on moving the carriage, stretching fingers adapted to pass into the hollow body on moving the carriage toward the said stretching fingers, slides carrying the said stretching fingers and adapted to move toward and from each other at an angle relative to the movement of the carriage, and means moving the said slides froml each other after the fingers are in engagement with the said body to stretch the mouth of' the latter widthwise of the said core to allow of withdrawing the latter from the body.
5 A core pulling machine, comprising a carriage adapted to support a hollow body with the core therein, actuating means under the control of an operator for imparting movement to the said carriage, stretching fingers adapted to pass into the hollow body on moving the carriage toward the said stretching fingers, slides carrying the said stretching fingers and adapted to move toward and from each other at an angle relative to the movement of the carriage, threaded lugs on the said slides, a screw rod mounted to turn and having right and lefthand screw threads screwing in the said threaded lugs, and means for turning the said screw rod to move the said slides from each other after the said lingers are in position in the body to stretch the mouth thereof Widthwise of the core and to allow Withdrawal of the latter from the body.
6. A machine for pulling a at core out of a hollovs7 rubber body having a contracted neck and a mouth, comprising converging 10 stretching fingers adapted to pass through the said mouth into the hollow body to impart a preliminary stretching to the mouth and neck Widthwise of the core, and means moving the said stretching fingers apart to stretch the mouth and neck further Width- Wise of the core until the side Walls of the stretched mouth approximately register with the side edges of the core.
