To all whom it may 00% earn Be it known that we, ENos J. Perry and VVILLIAM L. BOUCHARD, citizens of the United States, residing at Port Henry, .111
the county of Essex, and State of New York,
have invented new and useful Improvements in Devices for Compressing Valve-Springs,
of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device which may be employed jDOCOHlPlGSS the springs upon -the valve stems ofthe valves of internal combustion engines when it is desired to remove the valves from the casingstherefor upon the engine cylinders.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a device of this character in which an arm adjustably mounted thereon is not only provided with mechanism for automatically locking the same in adjusted position, to permit the device to be used inconnection with the various types of internal combustion engines now in use but also serves as a support for the operating mechanism associated with a plunger for which the arm serves as a guide. 7
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will comprise few parts and is strong and reliable in use.
With these and other objects in view the invention resides in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The preferred embodiment of the inven tion has been illustrated upon the accompanying drawing, although no restriction is necessarily made to the precise details of construction therein shown, as changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the appended claims may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation partly in section of a device constructed in accord ance with the invention and showing the same compressing the spring upon the valve stem of. a valve of an internal combustion engine.
Fig. 2 is an end view of the device.
Fig. 3 isa top plan view thereof, and
Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the spring engaging foot.
Like characters of reference denote corresponding parts throughout the various views in the drawing.
Specification of Letters Patent- 7 Pat-{513135341 @ct. iltr ll ii.
Application filed May29, 1917. Serial No. 171,797.
Referring now to the drawing in detail the letter A designates the portion of a cylinder of an internal combustion. engine having. formed thereon a valve casing B in which is mounted avalve C, normally held upon its seat by a spring D encircling the stein-of the valve and supported thereon by the usual pin Eand washer F.
The improved device for compressing the valve spring includes a bar 5 notched upon oneside as at '6, for a portion of itslength and provided at its lower end with a laterally extending extension: 7 terminating at its free end in a flattened and tapered foot 8,
as a seat for the washer F.
Arranged above the extension 7 and in a plane parallel therewith, is an arm 11 provided at one end with a sleeve 12 through which passes the bar 5, said sleeve having passed therethrough a pin 13 normally held in one of the notches in the bar 6 by a leaf spring 14 depending from said sleeve and bearing against the bar 5. The other end of the arm 11 has formed integral therewith and arranged at right angles thereto a barrel 15 through which passes a plunger 16 having a pointed lower end 17 to engage the valve C. The upper end of the plunger 16 is formed with a bifurcated head 18 and has pivotally connected therewith an end of the curved plunger operating lever 19 with which are pivotally connected a pair of links 20 arranged upon opposite sides of the lever and fulcrumed upon the barrel 15 to permit the plunger to be reciprocated within the barrel through the operation of the lever 19. W hen it is desired to employ the device for compressing the valve spring upon a valve of an internal combustion engine the arm 11 is rocked against the influence of the spring 14: to disengage pin 13 from the bar 5 and permit the arm to be moved up or down on said bar.
The foot 8 is now inserted between the pin E and washer F on the valve stem and the arm 11 pushed downwardly toward the extension'on the bar 5, until the plunger 16 extends within the valve casing and bears on the valve therein, the spring 14 and pin 13 offering no resistance to the downward movement of the arm 11.
The lever 19 is now raised to cause the bar 5 to compress the valve spring D and hold the same compressed until the pin has been withdrawn from the valve stem, after which the lever is released and the arm 11 moved upwardly on the bar 5 until the plunger is withdrawn from the valve casing, after which the device may be laid aside until it is desired to restore the spring and pin to the valve. From the foregoing statements taken in connection with the accompanying drawing it is at once apparent that a device for the purpose set forth has been provided which is highly eflicient in use, although inexpensive of manufacture.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed .as new, is
1. In a device of the class described, an
arm, a plunger passing therethrough, means for operating said plunger connected there with and With the arm, a sleeve on said arm, a bar passing through said sleeve and means for yielding'ly locking said sleeve on the bar.
2. In a device of the class described, an arm, a plunger carried by said arm, means for operating said plunger connected therewith and with the arm, a sleeve on said arm, a bar passing through said sleeve and hav ing notches therein, a pin passing through said sleeve, and means carried by the sleeve and engageable with said bar for yieldingly holding the pin in the notches.
In testimony whereof We aflix or our signatures.

It is hereby certified that the name of the first-mentioned patentee in Letters Patent No. 1,320,269, granted October 28, 1919, for. an improvement in Devices for Compressing Valve-Springs, Was erroneously written and printed as Enos J. Petty, Whereas said name should have been written and printed as Ewes J. Petty; and that ,the said Letters Patent should be read with this correction therein that the same may conform to the record of the case in the Patent Ofiice.
