Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. '28, 1919.
Application filed .Tune 10, 1918. Serial No. 239,131.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN A. (Ensure, a
citizen of the United States of America, and
a resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Store-Counters, of which the following is a specificatlon.
This invention relates to a type of sec tional-counter construction now much in use in restaurants and stores, and its objects are, by slight changes in its design, to overcome certain objections to said type of counter. These objections are that fastening means are required to secure the counter to the floor, causing injury to the latter, and that the counter stools, for proper support, are likewise fastened to the floor and accordingly cannot readily be adjusted along the floor lengthwise of the counter.
An illustrative embodiment of this invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a transverse sectional View of a counter constructed according to this invention.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary frontelevation of the same.
It is desirable in counter constructions as shown, that the counter stools be kept at some fixed distance from the counter, and
that they be adjustable lengthwise of the counter.
In the prior construction a foot-rail has been carried at the end of brackets secured to a row of stools which in turn were secured to the floor independently of the counter.
In'the present device, the counter is built up in sections, there being divisional castings to which the section panels and shelves of the counter are attached. The castings are provided with suitably placed flanges to engage and support the panels, shelves and longitudinal stringer bars by which the sections are securely connected together.
As shown inthe drawings, a plurality of divisional castings 1 afford support for the counter top 2, shelves 3 and 4:, and front panel 5. These castings are made with feet 6,
which project forwardly so as to give stability to'the counter without fastenings, regardless of the weight of articles which might be placed on the overhanging portion 7 of the top 2.
The foot-rail 8 passes through supporting brackets 9 which are preferably detachably mounted on knees of the feet 6, the rail orbar 8, being secured to the brackets by set screws or other suitable means, thereby servlng to brace the feet against lateral strains and assisting to maintain them in alinement. The stools 10 are fast to bracket members 11 which are journaled on and slidable along rail 8 but may be permanently set in any desired position along the rail by set screws '13. j
The flanges 11 of the divisional transverse castings 1, are tapped to receive screws 15 for the fastening stringer strips 17.
Short strips 18 pass through apertures 19 in the webs 20 of castings 1, said strips are fastened to the panels 5 by screws 16, and the structure is tightened by wedges 21 driven into the apertures 19.
When the counter is placed on uneven floors, it is leveled by the adjustingscrews 22 in the feet of frame castings 1. The screws have heads to engage the floor and their threaded shanks are seated in unthreaded bores in the socket members 28 and 24, which are spaced apart vertically to ad mit the nuts 25 by means of which adjustment is effected.
Although but one specific embodiment of this invention has been herein shown and described, it will be understood that numerous details of the construction shown may be altered or omitted without departing from the spirit of this invention as defined by the following claim.
I claim:
A counter construction, comprising spaced divisional supportin frames having webs and flanges for endwise and marginal engagement with interposed panels and shelving, said divisional frames having forwardly extending feet, a bar connecting said feet and secured thereto to constitute a foot rail and a spacing brace member, and a stool having a standard or supporting column adapted to rest upon the floor and provided with a bracket which is slidably connected to said rail or bar and is guided thereby to maintain the stool at a definite distance from the counter at any adjusted position.
Signed at Chicago this 4th day of June, 1918.
JOHN A. GUSTUS.
