To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, Rosc'oE R. STARRETT and GEORGE TV. ROUND, citizens of the United States, and residents of Cleveland, 1n the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohlo, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Snow Pushers and Shovels, of which I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrlption, such as will enable others skilled 1n the art to which it appertarins to make and use the same.

The objects of the invention are to provide an improved form of snow shovel and pusher, which is capable of being used alternately for either purpose accordlng to the convenience of the operator and character of the snow. For instance, if the snow should be light and fluffy it wouldbe better to push it off the walks or paths than to lift it and toss it off because the wind would scatter it back again.

The invention comprises a flexible metal blade and a handle attached thereto at an angle and suitable for use as a shovel, or alternately therewith as a snow pusher. The 1nvention also includes adjustable means for drawing back the outer edge of the blade to a less wide angle relatively to the handle to suit it for use as a snow pusher. The invention also includes a detachable and reversible side wing which can be secured to either vertical edge of the back of the blade, to prevent the snow from escaping at the side when the blade is used as .a pusher or scraper.

The invention comprises the details of construction and means for adjustment hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of the device, showing the two positions assumed by the blade; one of them in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device. Fig. 3 is a plan thereof and Fig. 4: is a perspective of a side wing attachable thereto. Fig. 5 illustrates a hinged blade.

In these views, A is a blade formed of flexible sheet steel or iron, and having a marginal flange B on its upper side to which the long handle C is attached. Brace rods D, D, run from positions adjacent to the lower or outer edge of the blade to a link E one end of which is slidingly movable between guides F, F, and the other end of which is attached to the locking lever G, pivoted upon a standard H elevated above the handle. The link E is pivotally attached to the lever by means of a pin or rivet H and the other end of the link is connected with the ends of the rods D, D, which move in guide slots J, J, in the guide members F, F. The blade will bend when the lever is thrown back and the lever will then become locked and hold the blade rigidly in the position for pushing the snow. 7

Holes spaced at K, K, along the sides of the lever permit adjustment. A side wing L can be detachably secured alternately to the vertical edges of the blade to prevent the spreading of the snow at that side and to confine it to the pusher or compel it toflow past the other side.

This is secured by means of lugs M, N, projecting from the edge of the side wing which are insertible in openings 0, O in the blade adjacent to its inner edges. The openings 0, are preferably grooves formed in the folded reinforcing edge P of the blade.

The brace rods are so shaped that when the blade is used as a shovel the rods will lie flat upon the blade, but when the lever is thrown to draw the blade in the pushing position, the rods will act as bracing means for the extremity of the blade. In Fig. 5, the blade A, is shown hinged to the base B, which is secured to the end of the long handle.

Having described the invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with a blade formed of flexible sheet metal and a handle extending therefrom at an angle, of brace rods secured adjacent to the outer edge of said blade, a connection for said rods slidably mounted upon said handle, a lever pivoted upon said handle and connecting means between said lever, and slidable connection.

2. The combination with a blade and a handle attached thereto at an angle, of brace rods attached to said blade, and means mounted upon said handle for operating said rods to flex said blade.

3. The combination with a blade and a handle secured thereto at an angle, of brace rods secured to said blade at their outer ends and having their inner ends sliding ly movable upon said handle, of a locking lever pivoted on said handle and means for adjustably connecting said slidingly movable ends of said brace rods with said locking lever.

4. The combination with the adjustable blade and handle of a combined push blade and shovel of a side wing detachably at tached to a vertical side of said blade.

5. The combination with the blade of a shovel of a side Wing detachably attached thereto.

6. The combination with the blade of a shovel and a reinforced edge therefor of a side wing, and lugs projecting therefrom, 15 said blade and reinforcing edge provided with socket openings adjacent to each vertical edge and receiving the lugs upon said side wing.
