PAUL W. HEATING, F OCHILTREE, TEXAS, LSSIGNOR 0F 0NE-HALF TO CHARLIE N. SMITH, 0F OCHILTBEE, TEXAS.
AIE-PUMP.
Application illed December 11, 1917.
To all whom it may concer/n.'
Be it known that I, PAUL W. KEATING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oehiltree, in the county of. Ochiltrec, State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improven'ients in Air-Pumps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invent-ion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine.
This invention' relates to air pumps, and has particular reference to pumps which are usually utilized for inflatin tires.
The object of the invention is to provide an air pump having a single cylinder, but operative to deliver equal quantities of air upon both the upward and downward strokes of the piston. More particularly, it is the object of the invention to construct a double action pump of the type above mentioned which is simply constructed, and may be manufactured for wide use at' a minimum cost. Thus, I provide a cylinder within which the piston is operative, and upper and lower heads which include all of the valve mechanism and connections necessary to the operation of the pump, the heads being east` ings and the valve casings being simply con structed hushed elements fitted into the cast- {ith the above objects in View, and such others relating to the details of construction as may hereinafter appear, my invention will now be fully set forth and described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
In the drawin l Il`igure 1 is a side elevation,
F ig. 2 is a vertical section therethrough,
Fig; 3 is a horizontal section through the nl )er cylinder head and Y llfig. 4 is a horizontal section through the lower cylinder head.
Referring more. particularly to tlie drawings, 1 represents t e pump cylinder of suitable sheet metal tubing, which is extcriorly threaded at its ends to fit within an upper head casting 2 and a lower head casting 3, the castings 2 and 3 haviner the flanges 4 and 5 respectively raised therefrom to relive said threaded ends of the cylinder` 'llie head 2 is provided wit-h a central ism within which a plu 6 is threaded, said slug 6 constitutes a gui(A e for the piston rod Speciicetion of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 206,632.
7 and carries a bushing 8 so that an airtight-joint may be maintained between the piston rod and the plug. A piston 9 which 1s operative in both directions is carried by the iston rod, and may be the usual double leat er piston which is used in most tire pumps.
The head 2 has formed at one side a valve recess 10 from which a right angularl turned port 11 extends to communicate wit the interior 0f the cylinder 1. Threaded into the recess 1() is a valve plug 12 having a longitudinal bore 13. lhe bore 13 opens to the atmosphere by means of a port 14 passed through the head of the plug, and has its forward end shaped into a valve seat upon which the spherical valve body 15 is held by means of a spring 16, the opposite end of the latter bearin against the bottom of the recess 10. Thus, v y screwin the plug 12 into or mit of the recess 10, t e tension of the spring 16 may be regulated. Upon its opposite side the head 2 is provided with a recess 17 into which a plug 18 is screwed, the Vplug 18 providing an abutment against which one end of a spring 19 bears, the opposite end of the spring 19 exerting its pressure against a spherical valve body 20 to hold it upbii a seat 21 cut into the bottom of the recess 17 around the end of a right angular port 22. The inner end of the port 22 communicates with the interior of the cylinder 1, so that air from the latter may be forced past the valve body and into thiA recess 17, from which it issues through a nipple 23 which extends downwardly from the overh angin portion of the head 2 which provides the va ve casing into which the recess 17 is bored.
"The head 3 also has bored into one side a recess 24 into which a plug 25 is threaded, the plug 25 havin the valve recess 26v and an inlet port 27 w ich leads into the recess 26. Leading from the recess 24 and bermimating in the top of the head 3 so as to coinmnnieate with the interior of the cylinder 1 is a port 28 throu h which air which is received through the inlet 27 is passed onto the cylinder. The spherical valve body 29 is held upon a seat 30 at the Edvard end of the valve recess 26, by means of the s ring 31, the sprin 31 being interposedV be een the valve bo and the inner end-of the recess 24. gpposite the valve casingr24, the head 3 is provided with a valve casing 32 within `which aV valve recess 33fis formed so as lo communicate With the interior of the cylinder 1 through u port 34, u vulve sentA 35 between the port 34 and the valve recess 33 being normally closed by ineens of a siherical valve body 36, As is the case wit the valve body 20, nv sprin 37 which is interposed between a plug 38 tlreuded into the end of the easing 32 und the vulve body 36, holds the lutter in resilient relation against the Seat 35. Rising from th(l casing' 32 is a nipple 39 which is connected to the nipple 23 above mentioned by menus of a flexible hose 40, the hose 4D thus connecting the two valve recesses 17 und 33 so that the air which is alternately revolved in the upper -Mid lower ends of the cylinder 1 is disgehnrged into 'fr common delivery tube 41.
The operation. of the pump which has been described is obvious from the foregoing, but. particular attention -is directed to the foot that the pump i assembled 'from parts which are verf.' simple in eoustruct-ion und which are emily nccersible when it is necessary Lo repair or adjust the parts, par iii-ularly the vulve mechanisms. By reason of the xnmll number of inexpensive elements, coupled with the fact that the pump in n double action mechanism, it is possible to place them on the market at n comparurvelv low cost.
What I claim my invention s:-
As an article of manufaoture, an nir pump comprising a tube having threaded ends, a
cap screwed onto each end oi" the tube, each of the cups having u. pair of diumetricully opposite and threaded radial recesses opening' through its periphery und un air duet extendingr from the inner ond of euch recess to the inclosnro of the tube,i n valve in mi recess of euch pail' disposed to clOSe the duet lending therefrom` n plug adjuiatahl'y screwed into and closing the outer end of euch of the lust named rei-essere, n pring lensioned between each plug :md the orre- Spondiug valve in )oeition to hold the latter normally and yieldnhly seul-cd over its; duct, e pipe conneri'ilur the lust mnned recesses, one of the plugs hevingr :in nir duet therethrough und being adopted for connection of a delivery pipe therewith, u vulve witl1 in each of the renmining receseeri, u plulgr having an inlet port therethrough und. Screwed into and inclosing the outer end of eneh of said remaining recesnee, u spring disposed between each of the lust named wives und the hottrinn of its recess, dieposed to hold the velve yieldably to close the plugr port and a. double ailing plunger Within the tube having a4 rod extending exterior-ly thereof.
In testimony whereof, I eix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
PA UL W. KEATING.
