UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL 3. SHEFFIELD, or VENICE, CALIFORNJA.
HAIRPIN.
T0 aZZ wlwm it may concem:
Be it knovvn that I, DANIEL B. SHEFFJELD, a citizen of United States, residing at Venice, in the county of Los Angeles, State of California, have invented certain new and use- ;ul Improvements in Hairpins; and I do hereby declare the follovvin to be a full, clear, and exact description o the invention, such as vvill enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine.
This invention relates to improvements in hair pins and is directed more particularly to an improvement on the structure disclosed in Patent No. 1,126,752 issued February 2, 1915.
An object of the present invention resides in the provision of a hair pin embodying a pair of onter leg portions and a pair of central coperatng locking legs, constructed and arranged to 50 engage a plurality of strands of hair as to hold the pin firmly in position and against loss or displacement.
With the above and other objects of similar nature in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended daim.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a hair pin constructed in accordance with the inventien,
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, and
Fig. 3 is an enlarged section taken on the line 83 of Fig. 1.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawing, my improved hair pin is formed from a single strand of resilient vvire and consists of the main or enter legs 5 Which are corrugated as at 6 at their inner ends.
Between the legs 5 are provided a pair of Specification of Lettcrs Patent.
Application filedJune 21, 1917.
Patented Oct. 21, 1919.
Serial No. 176,162.
When thus constructed, the legs 7, 7 are adapted, as the pin is inserted into the hair in the usual manner, to pass on opposite sides of a plurality of strands of hair so that the latter Will enter the space formed between the humps 9. By thus disposing the hair between the legs 7, 7 the latter Will co operate, as Will be readily understood in holding the pin firmly in position, it being impossible for the hair to pass from between the legs 7, 7 nnless the pin is grasped and withdravvn, so that possibility of' accidental loss or displacement of the pin Will loe precluded.
What I claim is:
A hair pin formed from a single piece of wire and comprising a pair of enter leg por tiens and a pair of central coperating looking legs formed by doubling the central. portion 01? said Wire, said locking legs being twisted as to their inner ends and being bent betwcen their ends first in divergent and then in convergent relation to provide oppositely directed humps and being finally bent terminally in divergent relation.
In testimony whreOf, I afix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
DANIEL B. SHEFFIELD.
