METHOD'OF MANUFACTURING CORSET-STAY UNITS.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, VALnnMAn Kors, a citizen` of the United States, residing in the borough of -Ma`nhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Methods of Manufacturing Corset-Stay Units, of which the following is the specification.
Heretofore in the manufacture of apparel corsets and more particularly in that part of the same Which relates to the application of the stays or stiffeners thereto, it has been customary to provide in the body of the garment a pocket to receive the stay, then to place the stay in the pocket, then to close one or both ends df the pocket, and then in most instances to also provide a binding strip over one or both ends of the pocket to prevent the ends of the stay from working through the ends of the pocket in the use of the garment. This obviously is a relatively expensive operation in view of the' fact that a different operator is employed to perform each of the several steps hereinbefore outlined, and the object of my present invention is therefore to provide an improved corset stay unit and the method of making'the same, so that in the application of the stay unit to the garment, the number ofoperators is decreased, and consequently the cost of manufacture materially reduced. K
The corset stay unit made in accordance with my present invention is somewhat similar to that described in my co-pending application Serial No. 879,438 filed Decemloer 29, 1914, and the object of the form of corset stay unit in the present case is precisely similar to that set forth in my appli-V cation aforesaid. In the present instance however, the corset stays are placed in parallel spaced positions, and adhesive s ips of material applied to and folded over the respective alined ends of the stays so placed, and in this position the adhesive tapes are pressed'against the opposite sides of the ends of the stay units and also the intermediate portions of the strips thei'nselves .vhieli come between the stay members are pressed together and the parts are dried in this position 4so as to maintain the corset stays in place, it being `understood that as many stays,'as is practical, may be placed in the adhesive' strips of material and after lacing dried, the stripsofi adhesive material may Specification of Letters Patent. be severed between predetermined corset stays in order to make corset stay units having a plurality of any desired num-'ber of corset stays therein. ln the application of the corset stay unit thus made, the unit is applied to the body of the garment, then covered with a pocket strip, andthe pocket strip, the stay unit, and the body of the .gar-A Y ment are secured togetherV simultaneously by the same line or lines of'stitching in a manner similar to that described,V in my application aforesaid.
In the drawing I have illustrated diagrammatieally gures to show the manner in which my present invention may be carried out. f
Figure 1 is a plan representing` a portion of the frame in Which the corset stays are placed in parallel spaced positions inthe initial step in carrying out this invention.
Fig.A 2 is a diagrammatic cross section illustrating the manner in which the end of the stays are raised in order to apply the strips of adhesive material thereto.
Fig. 3 is a diagrammatic section illustrating the position `of the frame members When in the press for clamping and dryingthe parts.
Fig. hesive material.
Fig. 5 is an edge view of one of the frame members. y A A Fig. 6 is aplan of the stay units as the same are removed from the press and drier, and
Fig. 7 is a plan of stay unit comprising a pair of stays with the strips of adhesive material secured to the ends thereof.`
In carrying out this invention and in the manufacture of stay units made .in accordance therewith, I may employ a frame comprising` similar opposite members 10 and 11, the member 10 being provided with a complementary frame member 12, and the member 11 With a complementary frame member 13. The frame members 10 and 12 are preferably hinged together asindicated at 14, and similarly the frame members 11 and 13 are hinged together as indicated at 15. The frame member 10 is provided with spaced ribs 16 placed in parallel-positions and providing intermediate grooves 17 and the frame member 12 is provided with similar ribs 18and intermediate grooves 19, the 18 heilig pf .ad in position. .lar to 4l is a partial plan of` a strip of adthe rib 16 so that when the frame members 10 and 12 are folded together, the grooves 17 and 19 form pockets to receive the ends of the corset stays with a covering applied thereto as hereinafter described. Y Similarly the frame member 11 is provided with spaced parallel ribs 20 with intervening grooves 21, and the frame member 13 with ribs 22 and intervening grooves 23, the ribs 22 being placed in positions in the frame member 13l corresponding to the positions of the ribs 20 in the frame member 11. Also, the frame members 10 and 11 are so placed in the apparatus that corresponding ribs 16 and 20 are in'alinement.
In the initial operation of manufacturing the stay unit made in accordance with this invention, corset stays 24 are placed in the grooves 17 and 21, of the frame members 10 and 11 With the frame members 12 and 13 folded back as shown in Fig. 1. When so placed in the frame members the corset stays are in spaced parallel positions and the ends of the same are alined by being forced against stops 26 or otherwise, the stops 264 as illustrated, being placed at the inner ends of the grooves 17 in the frame member 10. When so placed in the frame members, the corset stays also extend over bars 27 and 28, the surfaces of which are in the same plane as the surfaces of the grooves 17 and 21, and extending above and preferably parallel to the bars 27 and 28 is a similar bar 29 Which after the tips 25 at the corresponding ends of the corset stays are brought against the stops 26, may be brought doWn to bear against a similar portion of each corset stay as indicated in Fig. 2 to raise or elevate the respective ends of al1 the stays in the frame.
In this elevated position a strip of adhesive material indicated at 30 preferably creased longitudinally along the central line 31, is applied with the adhesive surface inwardly to the ends of all the corset stays in the frame so as to cover the same, then the bar 29 is raised permitting the ends of the corset stays, and the strip of covered material applied thereto to return to the, position shown in dotted lines, Fig. 2, in which the corset stays or the ends thereof lie over the grooves in VWhich they were originally placed. The frame members 12 and 13 are now folded over tothe position shown in Fig. 3 and the frame placed 'between the parts 32 and 33 of a press so that the strips of adhesive material are pressed firmly against thesides of the corset stays and the intermediate portions of the strips of adhesive material are pressed together by the ribs of the frame members. The frame is permitted to remain in press until the adhesive material is. thoroughlyv dry and, if necessary, a suitable drying apparatus may be employed to Yshorten the time taken in drying the adhesive.
After the adhesive is dried the frame is taken from the press, the frame members 12 and 13 folded back to the position shown in Fig. 2 and the semi-finished article as shown in Fig. 6 yis removed from the press. This as illustrated in this figure comprises a plurality of corset stays secured in spaced positions between strips of material extending over and adhesively secured to the opposite ends thereof, the product as brought from the press being indicated at 34. Now, as will be understood, the stri-ps of dried adhesive material may. be cut for instance along the lines 35 to cut from the product av stay unit indicated at 3G, this stay unit comprising a pair of corset stays with the strips of adhesive material extending Y over the ends thereof and maintaining the parts in position. Obviously the stay units may be made to include any number of corset stays With the strip of material extending over the ends thereof and adhesively securing the same in spa-ced parallel positions. i p Y In the lapplication of thethus formed corset stays to an apparel corset the stayV unit is placed in yposition on the body of the garment, a cover strip placed over the same, and the cover strip together With the stay unit and the body of the garment are connected together by lines of stitching which ext-end through the cover strip, the strips of adhesive material securing the stay Vunit members together and the body of the garment. p
I claim as my invention:
1. The hereinbefore described method of manufacturing corset stay units, consisting in supporting a plurality of stays in spaced positions with their ends free and in alinement, applying strips of materialso as to extend over the free end portions of the corset stays and then securing the so-applied strips of material to the corset stays at the ends thereof to maintain the same in position.
2. The hereinbefore describedmethod of manufacturing corset stay units consisting in placing a plurality of corset stays in parallel spaced positions With the ends thereof in alinement, raising the ends of the thus placed corset stays, applying strips of adhesive material to and over the raised end portions only of the corset stays, and plac-V ing and pressing the parts ofthe strips of adhesive materialto the sidesof the corset stays at the ends thereof to secure the same in position. Y
3. The hereinbefore described method of manufacturing corset Vstray units consisting in placing a plurality of corset stays in parallel spaced positions with the ends thereof in alinement, raising the ends of the thus izo placed corset stays, applying` strips of adhesive material to and over the raised end portions of the corset stays, placing and pressing the parts of the strips of adhesive material to the sides of the corset stays at the ends thereof to secure the same in position, and cutting the strips of adhesive material between predetermined corset stays to form corset stay units having a predetermined number of corset stays therein.
t. The hereinbefore described method of manufacturing corset stay units consisting in placing a plurality of corset stays in normally flat parallel spaced positions with the ends thereof in alinement, gripping and depressing the eentral portions of each of said stays and thereby raising the end portions thereoi, applying strips of adhesive material over the raised end portions of said stays, releasing the central portions of the said stays thereby permitting the end portions thereof with the applied adhesive material to return to their former positions, and then pressing the adhesive material together and to the intervening portions oi' the said corset stays to secure the saine in position in the said strips of adhesive material.
Signed by ine this 22nd day of June, 1917.
