CORPORATION OF- DELAWARE,
UMBRELLA RIB AND SPREADER STRUCTURE 'AND METHOD OF P ROD'UCIZFG TEE Application filed June 7' This invention relates to umbrella structures and methods employed in their production, the same being in the nature of an improvement upon my co-pending application Serial No. 87,133 filed Feb. 9, 1926.
The present invention comprehends an improved hingedly connected umbrella rib and spreader structure, and a method of producing the same, whereby a strong, durable, yet inexpensive structure and method of production may be accomplished.
With the above recited and other objects in view, reference is had to the following specification and accompanyingdrawings in which there is exhibited one example orembodiment of the invention which is in no way intended as a limitation upon the scope of the appended claims as it is to be clearly understood that variations and modifications which properly fall within the scope of said claims may be resorted to when found expedient. j
In the drawings- Figure 1 illustrates the initial step in the production of a set of hingedly connected ribs and structures;
Fig. 2 is a side view of the initial the method ofproduoing the sa ine;
F ig. 3 is a plan View illustrating the second step in the method;
Fig. t is a side view thereof;
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the third step in the method, and 7 Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a completed hingedly connected rib and spreader element.
Referring to the drawingsby characters of step in A reference and particularly to Fig. 6, 10 dos ignates the rib, 11 the spreader, and 12 and 18 the flexible connecting pieces between the rib and spreader which serve to hingedly connect and reinforce the elements at this point. i
In producing the hingedly connected rib and spreader elements, a strip of material A of the desired length and width to produce a set of ribs, is used, upon'which is superimposed a second strip B of the desired length and width to Spreaders. A strip of flexible material C of a length approximately equal to the width of the strips A and B is laid transversely and adhesively secured to the uppersurface of the strip A and the inner end of the strip '13 so that the strips produce a similar number of are joined together at this 1926. Serial No. 114,325.
point. After the adhesive is set, the strip B is swung relatively to the strip A so that it overlies the other portion of the strip A with the flexible strip 0 doubled upon itself, as illustrated in Fig. l. A second flexible strip D ofapproximately the same size as the strippieces of uniform size to produce the finished articles which are shown in Fig. 6.
Under this method is obvious that hingedly connected and reinforced rib and spread er structures for umbrellas of the type specified may be produced in a minimum time and,
at an extremely low cost.
hat is claimed is: 1. The herein described method of producing a set of hingedly connected umbrella rib and spreader units, consisting in superimposing a pair of sheets of material upon each other with. the end of one sheet disposed at substantially the medial portion of the other sheet, adhesively securing a transverse flexible strip to the inner end of the upper sheet of material and to the lower sheet of material, swinging the upper sheet in an opposite direction to bend the flexible strip upon itself after the adhesivehas set, applying a second strip of material adhesively to the inner endof the upper face of the lower sheet, and simultaneously cutting the sheets and strips along parallel lines longitudinally of the sheets to provide a plurality of connected rib and spreader units.
2.,The herein described method of produc ing a plurality of sets of hingedly connected and spreader units, consisting umbrella rib I in independently superimposing a number of pairs of sheets of material upon each other with the end of one sheet posed at substantially the medial portion'of the other sheet, adhesively securing a trans verse flexible stripto the inner end of the up- 7 per sheet of material and to the upper face of the lower sheet of material, swinging the upper sheet in an opposite direction to bend the sheet and the upper of each pair dis- YORK,ASSIG1\TOR, BY DIRECT AND MESNE AS- spreader units,
flexible strip upon itself after the adhesive has set, and applying a second strip of mate rial adhesively to the inner end of the upper sheet and to the upper face of the lower sheet;
superimposing a pluralityof said hingedly connected sheets upon each other in alinelnent, and simultaneously cutting the sheets and strips thereof along parallel lines longiproduce a plurality 7 connected rib and tudinally of the sheets to of independent hingedly 3. The herein described method compris ing hinging an end of one sheet of material to a medial portion of another sheet of mate-v riel, and plurallydividing said hinged sheets;
4. The herein described method comprise ing hinging an end ofan elongated sheet of material to a medial portion of a second elongated sheet of material, and dividing the hinged sheets by a plurality of parallel cuts.
