This invention relates to mechanisnr for connecting a fresh web to an expiring web in a printing press without stopping the press or slacking its speed.
The principal objects of the invention are to provide means actuated from the paper roll itself for controlling the connection of the end of the fresh .web with the end of the expiring one and severing the latter from the stub while the press is operating at full speed; to provide improvements in the mechanism by which the operation is con trolled; and to provide an improved actuating cam supported by the web roll.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will appear hereinafter.

Then connections are operated for releasing the pasting roller from this position and causing it to press the expiring web against the fresh web roll. This, of course, in view of the timing just described, brings the old web just in advance of the line on which it is to be severed into contact with the surface of the new web that hasbeen pasted or glued. It is secured to it by the pressure of the roller on the back of as that set forth in my prior applicationfor patent on web renewing device for printing presses filed September 19, 1914, Serial No. 862,469, and, is described herein because this invention is shown in the drawings as applied to a machine operating in that way.
Referring now to the drawings, the mechanism is shown as mounted on the frame 1 of a printing press, only the end of which is shown. In bearings on the brackets 2 with which this frame is provided a freshweb roll 3 is located, one for each deck of the press. This web roll is provided with a spindle 4 and an actuating cam 5 is located on-each end. In my above mentioned application this cam is fixed to the spindle, but in this case it is shown as having prongs 7 which enter the end of the roll between the layers of paper thereon. is easily secured in any desired position. The expiring web roll is indicated at 6, and in these drawings it is the fresh upper web roll 3 that is being connected up with the expiring web from the lower roll although of course the opposite operation is also performed in the same way.
The following mechanism shown in my above mentioned applicationis also shown herein. Between each two decks of the press the shaft 11 is provided with a double toothed clutch 48 operated by a hand lever crank 29 fixed to a shaft 56. The oppositely facing teeth of this clutch coperate with teeth on a pairof bevel gears 46, both meshing with a bevel gear 47. This ear is supported by a shaft which is provided with a worm 45, which worm meshes with a worm wheel 44 on a shaft 40. On this shaft'is a bevel gear 41 which meshes with a corresponding bevel gear 42 on a vertical shaft 43. The shaft 40 and gears 41 and 42 are dulplicated above.
ach shaft 40 carries two gears 39 each meshing with an oscillating supporting member, in the form of a segment 36, one pair for each of the twoweb rolls. Each of these segments is pivoted on a stud 58 on the frame 1 and carries apivoted arm 37 in which the spindles of pasting rollers 38 are journaled. Thus it will be seen that the two parallel shafts 40 are caused to rotate simultaneously in either direction and the pasting rollers 38 moved up or down by manipulation of the hand lever crank 29. The pasting roller arms 37 are normally held against stops 49 ,on the segments 36 by means of springs 50 except while in pasting position. Vhn either pair of segments approaches the pasting position, adjustable pin stops 51 on the arms 37 come into contact with stop levers 52 pivoted to the frame of the machine at 53. Each stop lever 52 is held, by means to be described, in such position as to hold the arm 37 and compress the two springs 50. The latter are ready to propel the roller 38 against the fresh web roll when the two stop levers 52 are released from the position shown in Fig. 1 and thus apply the roller with spring pres sure against the web.
Both pairs of segments 36 are stopped in the correct pasting posit-ion by means of two pins 54 on one of the segments coming into contact, at the end of the motion of that segment, with a throw-out lever 55 attached to the shaft 56 of the hand lever crank 29. This throws out the clutch and sto 5 further motion in that direction.
11 the same stud 58 on which each segment '36 is pivoted. a toothed segment 57 is pivoted independently of the segment 36. The two segments 57 mesh with the teeth on opposite sides of a reciprocating rack bar 59. A spring 68 holds the.rack-bar 59 to the right, thus drawing the two segments 57 in the same direction and keeping the ends of the two cam levers 52 in the recesses 60 unless the segments 57 are forced to the left positively. In that event the parts will assume the position indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 4. Each segment 57 is provided with a. recess 60 in one edge for receiving the end of the stop lever 52 and holding it in the position shown in Fig. 1. It also has a cam incline 61' down which the end of the' lever 52 is adapted to slide when the segment 57 is drawn back to release the cam lever. To the opposite end 64 of each segment 57 is pivoted a'trip lever 62 having a cam roller 63 thereon. This cam roller is adapted to be operated by the cam 5 on the end of the web roll spindle.
As so far described the operation is the same as in my above mentioned application. According to this invention a catch 67 holds the lever 62 in such position that the roller 63 is normally out of contact with this cam. In order to control the operation of these elements a cam 10 is mounted on the fresh web roll. This is shown as having athin. flange 10 adapted to fit the circumference of the web roll and it ,is shown as being mounted by slitting one of, or a few of, the top layers of the web roll and inserting the flange so that the cam appears on the web roll as a hump. It will be understood,-of course, that it can be inserted under the top few layers if desired or it can consist of a projection formed of any desired material, such as card-board, a pad of paper or the like, placed upon or beneath the outside layers of web roll. It is placed at a definite distance from the end thereof as will appear.
This cam is designed to operate a roll 14 located on a lever 12 which is mounted to swing freely on a shaft 13,carried by I the bracket 2. On this shaft 13 is also fixed an arm 16 which is provided with two electrical contacts 15 on opposite sides of the lever 12. On the arm 16 are two springs 17 pressing on opposite sides of the lever 12 and holding it normally in central position so as to keep the lever out of engagement with both of the contacts 15. This arm 16 is provided with two rollers 18, one
of which is adapted to engage the upper web roll when used in connection therewith and the other of which will engage the lower web roll when that is to be attached to the expiring web. The shaft 13 is provided with an operating arm 19 by which it can be turned into the several positions in which it is to be' used. Its normal position is shown in Fig. 1 and it can be swung from that either upwardly as shown in Fig. 3 or downwardly. In the present case it is shown as swung upwardly so that the righthand roller 18 engages the surface of the web roll and the roll 14 is in the path of the cam or hump 10.
@ne of the contacts 15 is connected with one end of an electro-magnet 20 for the upper roll, and the other with a similar electro-magnet for the lower roll. The other terminal of each of these electro-magnets is connected with the arm 12 so that when the arm 12 is moved backwardly from the position sliown in full lines in Fig. 3 it will connect up one of the electro-magnets 20, attract its armature 22 and release the catch 67. This releases the trip lever 62 and a weight 65 with which it is provided swings it over into the position shown in Fig. 4.
llt will be understood that, as in my application above referred tp, when this lever 62 is released from the cam 5 and allowed to move back into the position shown in Fig. 3 the spring 68 will force the segments 57 back to the right and force the stop-levers 52 up the inclines 61 until they are locked in the position shown in Fig. 3. The oscillating segments 36 are shown in Figs. 1 and 3 at one end of their oscillation. When they move back to the opposite limit of their motion they assume the position shown in dotted lines'in Fig. 3.
For the purpose of severing the web a thin knife 69 is controlled by a pin H on the top of the rack bar 59. The cutting action occurs as soon as the pin H moves back, preferably as described in my above mentioned case. i I
The operation of the features of this invention is as follows: When it is desired to attach the fresh web to the expiring one the arm 19 is thrown up so that one of the rollers 18 comes into contact with the fresh web roll above or below which has already been brought up toweb speed. This action brings the roller 1st into the path of the cam 10. At the proper time this cam causes the lever 12 to move away from. the paper roll surface and form an electrical contact between the lugs on the levers 12 and 16. This causes one magnet 20 to draw the catch 67 away from the lever The counterweight 65 on this lever causes it to drop and the roller 63 to come into contact with the cam 5. ltt will be understood that the weight holds the lever down in this position during the operation of this cam. This cam controls the operation of cutting by the knife 69 and pasting by one of the rollers 38. After the web is connected the lever 62 is swung back by hand until caught by the catch 67.
The other operations performed are conducted as in my above identified application preferably. The parts are operated auton'iatically and timed correctly in synchronism with the operation of the press, and the control of the actuation of the parts is provided from the web roll itself, so that there is no danger of their being operated independently of the web roll.
Although I have illustrated and described only a single form of the invention and shown it as applied to a particular machine, T am aware of the fact that the cam 10 can be used with the cam 5 shown in my above mentioned case, that the cam 5 shown herein can be used without the cam 10. and that modifications can be made therein by any person skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the invention as expressed in the claims, and that it can be applied in connection with other forms of web roll controlling devices.
Therefore, I do not wish to be limited in these respects, but what I do claim 'is:
1. Tn a web renewing device, the combina tion of means for pressing the web against a fresh webroll, a stop in position to prevent the pressing means from causing the web to engage the fresh web roll, and means con trolled by the fresh web roll for automati cally releasing the stop and permitting the pressing means to move toward said roll.
2. In a web renewing device, the combination of a roller for pressing an expiring web against a fresh web roll, yielding means for moving the roller toward the fresh web roll. a stop in position to prevent the roller from causing the web to engage the fresh web roll, and electro-magnetic means movable with the fresh web roll for releasing the stop and permitting the yielding means to force the roller to apply the web to the fresh roll.
3. Tn a web renewing device, the combina tion of a roller movably mounted. yielding meansfonforcing said roller toward a fresh web roll, a stop in position to limit the motion of the roller in that direction, means for holding the stop, a cam carried by the fresh web roll, and means operated by said cam for releasing said step holding means.
4:. Tn a web renewing device, the combination of a movably mounted web controlling roller, a catch, connections normally held by sai r catch for releasing said roller, a fresh web roll having a projection upon its surface, means operated by said projection for releasing said catch, and means for then operating said connections to allow the roller to move to apply the web to the fresh web roll.

In a web renewing device, the combination of a movable web controlling or pasting roller, a fresh web roll having a projection upon its surface, ashaft having two arms thereon projecting from the shaft in substantially the same direct-ion, said arms having electrical contacts thereon, yielding means for holding said arms apart. one of the arms being adapted to be engaged by said projection and moved so as to bring said contacts together, and electrical connections controlled by said contacts for setting the pasting roller into operation.
8. In a device of the character described, the combination of a shaft, said shaft having two arms extending therefrom, one loosely mounted, each arm having a contact thereon, a spring for holding said contacts apart, each of said arms having a roller thereon, a web roll in position to receive the rollers on said arms, said web roll having a projection in the path of one of said rollers, whereby when the projection engages that roller its arm will be moved and ,the contacts brought together, an electromagnet connected to be energized when'said contacts are brought together, a catch controlled by said electro-magnet, an oscillatable member normally held in a certain position by said catch. and means for pressing an expiring web against said fresh web i'oll. said means being controlled by said oscillatable member.

Ina device of the character described, the combination of a shaft, said shaft having two arms extending therefrom, each arm having a contact thereon, a spring for holding said contacts apart, a web roll in position to receive the ends of said arms, said web roll having a projection in the path of one of said ends, whereby when the projection engages that end its arm will 'be moved and the contacts brought together. an elect-ro-magnet adapted to be energized when said contacts are brought together, a catch controlled by said electro-magnet, an oscillatable member normally held in a certain' position by said catch, and means for severing an expiring web controlled by the oscillatable member.
10. In a web renewing device, the combination of means for severing an expiring web from its roll,'with a movable member,
acatch for holding the movable member in a position to prevent the action of the sever ing means, and means mounted on the fresh web roll independently of its shaft for re leasing the movable member to allow the severing means to operate.
11. Ina web renewing device, the combination of means for severing an expiring web from its roll, with an oscillatable member for controlling the severing means, a catch for holding the oscillatable member in a po-, sition to prevent the action of the severing means, means movable with the fresh web roll for releasing the oscillatable member to allow the severing means to operate, a cam movable with the fresh web roll, and means whereby when said oscillatable memher is released said cam will control it and operate it.
12. In a web renewing device, the com- U bination of means for severing an expiring web from its roll, wlth a cam provided wlth prongs set into the end of the fresh web roll,
r and means whereby said cam will control operated by said cam for controlling the operation of said web applying device.
11. In a web renewing device, the combination with a web roll, of a cam mounted on the fresh web roll independently of its shaft for controlling the w eb renewing operation, said cam having prongs adapted to be set into the end of the web roll between the layers thereof.
15. A cam for a web renewing device having prongs projecting from its surface, whereby it can be secured to the end of a web roll. 7
16. In a web renewing device, the combination-with a web roll. of a cam mounted thereon independently of the shaft of the web roll for controlling the web renewing operation. I j
17. A web roll-having a cam supported on its end independently ofits shaft.
18. A web roll having a cam on its convex surface for starting the operation of renewing the web.
19. A web roll having a slit through its outer layers and a. cam inserted in said slit and projecting from the surface.-
20. A cam for a .web roll having a cam surface -and provided with a thin flange adapted to be set intoa slit in a web roll.
