Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Amman H. MORTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Matawan, in the county of Monmouth and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Crate, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to shipping crates, the principal object being to provide a crate which will obviate crushing or damaging of the contents of the crate when a number of crates are arranged in tiers.

Another object of the present invention is to provide a crate wherein the top is so constructed as to permit its ready removal.

and which at the same time will insure the contents of the crate being undamaged upon removing the top.

A further general object is to improve shipping crates especially adapted to contain fruits and other perishable goods and which will generally enhance the utility of the same.

. An additional object is to provide a crate having the above characteristics, which is simple in construction, which consists of few parts, and which can be readily assembled and disassembled and which can be manufactured and placed on the market at a minimum cost.

With the above and other general ObJGCtS I and advantages in mind, the invention consists in the combinations of elements, constructions and arrangements, formations and general assemblage which will be hereinafter fully enlarged'upon in the following specification, the inventive features being recited in the claims appended hereto. One embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein A perspective of the crate is shown.

Referring to the drawing, wherein like characters of reference designate like parts on all of the views, the numerals 5 and 6 designate the walls of the crate to which are secured the bottom and side boards 7 The lowermost side boards extend below the lower edges of the end walls 5 and 6 and are adapted to rest upon a second Crate or the floor. Extending across the bottom of the crate and against the inner faces of the lowermost side boards and flush with the lower longitudinal edges of the same are runners or sills 8. The upper edge of each of the end walls 5 and 6 is formed with an upstanding extension 9 which is disposed centrally of the vertical edges of the end walls and are of a suflicient width so as to permit one or more boards 10 to be secured thereto. Boards 11 are secured to these upper walls at opposite sides of the upstanding extension. It will be thus seen that the board or boards attached to the upstanding projections or extensions are out of the plane of the boards 11, upon opposite sides of these extensions and that when the crates are arranged in tiers the bottom crate will not crush or injure the contents of the same, the fruit or other goods being only packed to the height of the boards 11.

This disclosure is merely illustrative and it will be understood that the same is susceptible to various modifications, and that my limits of modification are governed only by what is claimed.

What is claimed is:

1. In combination with a crate, of extensions formed upon each of a pair of opposite walls and adapted to have a board secured thereto, a board secured to said walls upon opposite sides of said extension, the latter board being disposed below the plane of the board secured to the extensions.

2. In combination with a crate, of an extension formed upon the upper edge of each of the end walls and extending longitudinally thereof and disposed centrally of the vertical edges of the end walls, a board extending across the upper edges of the end walls and secured to the same upon opposite sides of the extension, the crate being adapted to be filled to the height of said board, and a board secured to the extensions.

3. In combination with a crate including end walls, of extensions formed upon the upper edges of the end walls and along the crates length adapted to have closures secured thereto, and boards secured to the end walls upon opposite sides of the extensions.
