Be it known that I, Gnonen G. MURRAY, a citizen of the United States,- residing at Chicago,inthe county of Cookand State of Illinois, have'invented certain new and useful ImprOX e-Ine'ntsin'Car Roof Constr'uction, of whichthe followingis" aspecific'ation.
This invention relates to improvements'in car roof construction, and*has for its object to provide a new and improved car roof, simple in construction, and water-tight, whereby leakage of' water or the like, into the car is prevented. r
My construction is designed and intended to prevent leakage of water, or the like, through the roof, even under severe hose tests which precede the use of cars in'm'any instances where damage'able goods are to be shipped therein; 6 7
It is the principal object of my invention to provide a car roof'of simple construction comprising roof sheets supported by and attached'to' carline's, which in turn are supported by and attached-to the side plates. I construct these carlines of" channel beams with the channels facing upwardly, and

These flanges 17 are spaced from the sides 17, of the block proper, and extend in opposite directions, and are enlarged adjacent their extremities and provided with apertures 17 These flanges and blocks are constructed 0 that the former will contact with the side flanges 12 of the carlines 12, and are secured thereto bymeans of rivets, or other suitable fastening means, passing through the apertures 17 The construction of the flanges 17 to extend in opposite directions provides a strong and simple fastening means, and at the same time renders the block members 17 reversible. Provided in the blocks, and extending inwardly thereinto from one face thereof, are the recesses 17 with each of which communicates a slot 17 in the top of the blocks, providing, in effect, a T-shaped open-ended slot, for a pur: pose to be hereinafter described. Roof sheets 19 of sheet metal, or the like, are
provided, these roof sheets being supported upon the purlins and having-their sides bent upwardly and downwardly, as indicated by numeral 19 see Fig.10. These bent portions 19 project over the'side flanges 12 and downwardly into the channels 12 These roof sheets are further slightly offset at 19 to fit. over the horizontal flanges of the braces 15 and angles let, as is shown in Fig. 5, for example.
Fitting over the bent portions 19 of the roof sheets 19, and completely covering the channeled carlines 12, are what I term the cover strips 20 having the downwardly inclined side portions 20 resting on and closely contacting with the corresponding roof sheets 19,see Fig. 5, for example; To maintain these cover strips 20 firmly fixed in position, I provide the bolting members 21, having their heads 21 arranged to fit in the T-shaped slots 17 of the blocks 17. These bolts 21 extend upwardly through suitable holes or apertures in the cover strips 20, and washers 22 are fitted thereon around said bolts, the washers and cover strips being closely pressed and held against the block 17 by means of the nuts 23 screwed on the bolts 21. It will be apparent that by this construction the channels, as well as the sides of the roofsheets, are thoroughly covered and protected and streams of water, such as from a hose or the like, directed on or over the roof are prevented from flowing into the car, and even if any moisture should be driven upwardly between the sides 20 of the cover strips 20 and the roof sheets 19, such water will only penetrate into the channels 12 and will be permitted to flow outwardly therefrom, there being no apertures in or adjacent the bottom of these channels. Furthermore, the arched form of the carlines 12 is such as to cause the flow of fluid outwardly toward the sides of the car. At the ends of the carlines 12 the roof sheets 19 are cut away, asindicated by the nu meral 19. The roof sheets further have their outer side portions 19 bent downwardly and attached by nails, or the like, tothe side of the car, as shown in Fig. 3, for example. their ends 20" bent down, as shown in Fig. 9, and the extremities 20 of the side portions 2O are bent around, as is shown in Fig. 9. The downwardly bent portion 20 terminates above the floor of channel 12",
as shown in Fig. 6, so that flow of water, or
the like, from the carlines 12 is not effected or prevented.
Fitting over the. ends of the carlines, cover strips, and roof sheets are the caps 25,see Figs. 6 and 11, for example, the caps beingprovided with the top portion 25 secured in place by means of one of the bolts 21, as is shown in Fig. 6. These caps The cover strips 20 have are further provided with the downwardly projectingportions 25*, a portion of which is outwardly bent to provide a drainage space 25 therebetween and the side of the car. A bolt 26 extends through the portion 25 of caps 25 and the side plates 11, as 1 shown in Fig. 6.
Mounted upon the cover strips 20, intermediate their extremities and adjacent the central portion of the car, are the brackets 27 having the bases 27 which are attached by the adjacent bolts 21 to the respective block members 17. These brackets are further rovided with the top flanges 27 upon whic 1 are supported, and to which are secured, the usual running boards 28.
It will be apparent that I have provided a simple car roof, water-tight, and I have further provided an improved structure which is easy to assemble, and which reduces the weight of ordinary car roofs to a mlnimum.
It will also be apparent that my invention is susceptible of modifications and improvements, and I do not wish to be restricted to the form shown and described beyond the scope of the appended claims.

A car roof structure comprising side plates, purlins located inwardly of said side plates, channeled carlines extending between said side plates and resting on said side plates and said purlins, said carlines having their channels and side flanges directed upwardly, flanged members attached to the sides of said carlines and connected to said side plates and said purlins, roof sheets supported on said side plates and said purlins and having portions thereof bent up and over the side flanges of said carlines, cover strips mounted over said carlines and having side flanges eXtendil'lg downwardly and in contact with the upwardly bent portions of said roof sheets, block members attached to the side flanges of said carlines above the lower walls thereof and spaced from said lower walls, and means for securing said cover strips to said block members.

A car roof structure comprising side plates, channeled carlines extending therebetween and having their sides and channels facing upwardly, roof sheets having portions bent up and over the sides of said carlines, cover strips mounted over the bent portions of said roof sheets and over said carlines, means to attach said cover strips and roof sheets to the carlines, said means comprising block members mounted in the channels of said carlines, said block members being arranged with a space therebebers,

A car roof structure comprising side plates, purlins located inwardly of said side plates, channeled carlines extending between said side plates and resting on said side plates and said purlins, said carlines having their channels and side flanges directed upwardly, flanged members attached to the sides of said carlines and connected to said side plates and said purlins, roof sheets supported on said side plates and said purlins and having portions thereof bent up and over the side flanges of said carlines, cover strips mounted over said carlines and having side flanges extending downwardly and in contact with the upwardly bent portions of said roof sheets, block members attached to the side flanges of said carlines above the lower walls thereof and spaced from said lower walls, means for securingsaid cover strips to said block members, brackets attached to said block members adjacent the center of the car, and a running board supported upon said brackets.
10. A car roof structure comprising side plates, purlins spaced inwardly from said side plates, channeled carlines supported on said side plates and purlins and secured thereto, said carlines having their channels directed upwardly, angle members secured to said carlines and connected to said side plates and purlins, roof sheets supported on said side plates and carlines and having portions thereof bent upwardly and over the sides of said carlines, cover stripsextending over said carlines and having side flanges directed downwardly in contact with the upwardly bent portions of said roof sheets, and means for securing said roof sheets to said carlines.
