BLADE-SHARPENING DEVICE.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE D. GALLAGHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beaver Falls, Beaver county, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented and discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Blade-Sharpening Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to blade sharpening devices and consists in the com-' binations and arrangements of elements hereinafter described and particularly set forth in the accompanying claims.
The invention has for its purpose to provide a device adapted espeoi ally for sharpening safety razor blades of the hoe or wafer type, whereby the blade edges are uniformly ground by a simple and easily performed operation, and wherein no special skill is required in handlingthe device.
The invention has for its further purpose to construct a blade sharpening device in which an abrading roller is caused to operate against the opposite sides of the blade edge that are alternately and automatically positioned with respect to the roller through a slight reciprocable motion to the spindle on which the abrading roller is mounted.
Another object of the invention is to provide a blade sharpening device having a pair of abrading rollers for alternately grinding the opposite edges of a single blade, or the diagonally opposite sides of a doubleedged blade simultaneously, and having a device for holding the blade against accidental displacement during the sharpening operation.
The invention is shown by way of illustration in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is V108,

Referring to the construction in further detail, the device consists of a suitable support 8 constructed with angular and relatively parallel portions 9 and '9 that are a top plan view of the deapertured to receive the pair of tubular .or double-slotted tube 15 suitably j ournaled in the side portions 13 and 13 of the frame 12, and the slots of said tube are adapted to receive the blade B that is held on the piece 16 formed with the pair of studs 17 that engage in the slots or apertures formed in the ordinary blades of safety razors. The blade holding member 16 is formed with a hand-gripping piece 18 for inserting the blade into the tube 15 or removing the same, and for which purpose the end piece 13 of the frame and the end 9" of the support are cut away as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. In lieu of the'blade holder here shown, any other type of holding device may be employed, c. g. a suitable piece for holding the back of the ordinary razor blade.
The blade holder is adapted to be automatically oscillated for alternately present ing the opposite sides of the blade edge to the abrading rollers, and to this end the blade holding member 15 is constructed with an extended and spiral portion 20 that relatively flat in cross section. and works within a slot 21 formed in the portion 9 of the supporting member 8. It will therefore be obvious that any relative movement of said support and the frame '12 will impart oscillation to the blade holder.
The means for operating the device consists of a hand-actuated member 22 having a pair of side portions or rods 23 that are formed spirally and pass through the pair of spindles 10, and so engage therewith that reciprocation of said rods 23 will cause the spindles to be uniformly rotated. The engaging elements between the spiral members 23 and the spindles consist of suitable slots formed in the end portions 11, through .which the bars 23 pass, or any other suitpurpose may be employed.
The blade holder is adapted to be held against accidental displacement during the sharpening operation by means of a device consisting of a disk or plate 2 f .fixedly mounted on one of the spindles 10 by a pair of rings 25. Said disk is disposed slightly diagonal and engages within the notch 26 formed in the .blade holding member 18, .as shown in Figs. 1 and 7; and as the disk is rotated through the spindle onwhich it is mounted, a slight reciprocatory movement .is given the blade holder and blade. This operation assists in the grinding or sharpening action. The engagement betweensaid member 24 and the blade holder is located at a virtual point which allows the blade to be oscillated without binding or other interference. V
In operation, a single or double-edged blade is inserted in the holder after the manner stated, and the spiral bars are given slight movement which initially imparts lateral motion to the spindles carrying the grinding rollers; and toward the end of each stroke,

creases, the spindles are caused to rotate through the further movement of the spiral members 23. The movement of the spindles likewise moves the frame 12 carrying the blade holder, and thereby the spiral piece'20 is given the necessary oscillation for moving the blade edge from one roller to the other; and in the case of a double-edged blade, the respective edges thereof are alternately presented to the rollers, as shown in Figs. 8 and a. This turning of the blade holder occurs on the initial lateral movements of the spindles,
It is obvious that those skilled in the art may vary the details of construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention, and therefore I do not wish to be limited to suchfeatures, except as may be required'by the claims.
Havingthus fully described my said in vention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a blade sharpening device, the combination of a support, an abrading roller journaled in said support, a blade'holder mounted to oscillate a reciprocable spiral member engaging with said roller for imparting rotation thereto, and means on the blade holder, engaging with said "support to automatically position the opposite sides of the blade edge with respect to said, roller, substantially as set forth.
2. In a bladesharpening device, the combination of a support, an abradinghroller journaled in said support, a blade holder mounted to oscillate, a memberon the blade holder engaging with the support for an.-

3. In a blade sharpening device,the combination of a support, an abrading roller journaled in said support, a blade holder mounted to oscillate, a member for automatically imparting periodic oscillation to said blade holder, and a reciproca'ble spiral member engaging withvsaid roller for iinparting rotation theretov and, actuating the blade holder moving device to position the opposite sides of the blade edge with respect to said roller,substantially, as set forth.
4E. In a blade sharpeningdevice, thecombination of a support, an abrading roller journaled on said support, areciprocable member mounted in the support, a blade holder mounted to oscillate on the reciprocable member and having, a spiral portion engaging the support, and,a reciprocable spiral member engaging with said roller for imparting rotation thereto and automatically actuating the blade holder moving de vice to position the opposite sides of the blade edge with respect to said roller, substantially as set forth.
5. In a blade sharpening devic the combination of a. support, a spindle mounted to rotate and. reciprocate on said support, an abrading roller mounted on said spindle, a member mounted to reciprocate with the spindle, a blade holder mounted to oscillate on said reciprocable member and having a spiral portion engaging with said. support to automatically actuate said holder to po sition the blade edge with respect. to said roller, and a member engaging with said spindle for. imparting rotation and reciprocation thereto, substantially as set forth.
6. 7. Ina blade sharpening device, the-combination of a support, a pair of spindles mounted to rotate and reciprocate .on said support, a frame mounted on the spindles, a pair of abrading rollers mounted on said spindles within said frame, a blade holder mounted to oscillate on the frameandhaw ing a spiral portion engaging with said support to automatically position the blade edge with respect to the rollers, and a pair of spiral members engaging with said spindles respectively to impart rotation to said rollers and reciprocation to the frames, substantially as set forth.
8. In a device for sharpening doubleedged blades, the combination of a support, a pair of spindles mounted to rotate and reciprocate on said support, a frame mounted on said spindles, a pair of abrading rollers mounted on the spindles WlHllIl said frame, a blade holder mounted to oscillate on the frame and having a spiral portion engaging with said support to automatically position the blade edges with respect to said rollers, and a device having engagement with said spindles to impart rotation to the rollers and reciprocation to the frame, substantially as set forth.
9. In a blade sharpening device, the combination of a support, a spindle mounted to rotate and reciprocate on said support, a frame mounted on said spindle, an abrading roller mounted on the spindle within the frame, a blade holder mounted in said frame and connected to be oscillated from the support, a device mounted on the spindle and engaging with said blade holder to hold the same against displacement during operation, and means for imparting rotation to the roller and reciprocation to said frame to position the opposite sides of the blade edge with respect to said roller, substantially as set forth.
10. In a blade sharpening device, the combination of a support, a pair of spindles mounted to rotate and reciprocate on said support, a frame mounted on the spindles, a pair of abrading rollers mounted on the spindles within said frame, a blade holder mounted to oscillate on the frame and having a spiral portion engaging with said support, a device on one of said spindles engaging With the blade holder to hold the same against displacement during the operation, and means: for imparting rotation to the rollers and reciprocation to the frame to position the opposite sides of the blade edges with respect to said roller, substantially as set forth.
