Referring to the drawings, the numeral 10 indicates the base of the apparatus, the same having a raised marginal wall 11, the upper edge of which is level with the surface on which the apparatus operates.

Extending centrally upward from the base 10 is a rigid mast or post 12, the samevbeing tapered conically to its up er end, which is surmounted with a flag sta 13, below which is a cap 14 having downwardly turned edges adapted to shelter and protect an anti-frictional bearing 15, by which the cap ring 16 is engaged.

Another anti-friction bearing 17 surrounds the mast near its lower end connecting the lower ring 18, provided with extensions 19 to which the circular platform 20 is connected at its center.

The platform is supported at spaced intervals along its marginal edges by a plurality of radius rods 21, the same rigidly secured in the platform and extending upward to a point 22 where they are turned angularly inward and engaged with the cap ring 16.

Extending over the gears 34 and 25 are partially closed covers 38 providing housings for the gears and preventing the cloth ing of the ridersfrom being caught therein.

Fixed upon the spindles 36 are flanged wheels 39 the faces being adapted to rest upon a rail 40, bent into a circle and secured by the flange 41 upon the upper surface of the base element 10, the same forming a circular track supporting the platform 20.

Also fixed upon the spindles 36 are flat faced wheels 43, over which are trained the bight 44 of brake band elements secured to the platform by the rivets 45 at one end, while the other end is brought upwardly through openings formed in the platform, closely adjacent to the sides of the figures, the bands 46 being secured to outstanding pins 47 set in levers 48, pivoted on the pins 50 passing through the neck part of the figure representing a head, other arms 51 of the levers being engaged with cords 52, northereby drawing the brake bands 46 into engagement with the faces of the brake wheels 3 and retarding the rotation of the spindle 36 and wheels 39 on the circular track.

Brackets 53 are fixed to the necks of the figures representing animals and carry pairs of horizontally extending pins 54: which may .be used by the rider in order to steady themselves upon the figures.

From the foregoing it will be seen that a pleasure device of novel design has been disclosed, capable of being operated by the feet of the riders whose hands may grasp the projection 54k so as to be securely steadied on their seats and that brake devices are combined by which the rotation of the carousel 30 may be retarded by any of the riders at any time.

Having thus described my invention and set forth the manner of its construction, application and use what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- V 1. In a carousel, the combination with a hollow base, a trackway mounted therein, a circular platform rotatably mounted on said platform, and a plurality of figures on said platform, of a pedally driven gear train below each of said figures, flanged wheels driven by said gear trains, said wheels resting upon said circular track, guards over said gear trains, brake wheels adjacent to said flanged wheels, brake bands engaging said brake wheels, bell-crank levers secured in the heads of each of said figures in which Copies of this patent may be obtained for the upper ends of said bands are attached, and means for manually actuating the short armsof said bell-crank levers whereby the brakes may be applied.

2. In a carousel, the combination with a hollow cylindrical base, a circular rail arranged concentric therewithin, and a post fixed centrally in said base, of a pair of rings rotatably mounted on said post, a

platform guided by said rings, a fence arranged circumjacent to said post inclosing the center of said platform, a plurality of figural objects secured upon the upper surface of said platform, a pedally operated gear train below each of said figures, a track wheel actuated by each of said gear trains, said track wheels resting upon said circular rail, hand rests secured near the front of each of said figures adapted to be held by the riders, a bell-crank lever mounted in the head of said figures, a cord attached to one arm of said bell-crank levers, said cord extending over the figure so as to be pulled by the rider, other ends of said bell-crank levers, said levers extending through said platform, and friction wheels carried adjacent to said track wheels over which said brake bands extend whereby the movement of said platform I may be retarded.
