The invention relates to breech-mecha nism of that type in which the breech-plug is mounted upon a pintle screwed to the same pitch as that of the breech and carried on a carrier swinging on a vertical pivot on the gun breech, and in which the openlng and closing of the breech by the breech-plug is effected by the combination of a member operated either directly by hand or through gearing or power, and turning in a plane at right angles to the axis of the breech face, a link, and articulative means connecting the ends of the link respectively to the breech-plug and to the operating member; and the invention has for its object to improve the construction and action of such mechanism and provide a simple, effective and inexpensive form of spherical joints as the articulative means connecting the link with both the breech block and the operating member.
An example of the improved mechanism is shown on three accompanying sheets of explanatory drawings, Figure 1, Sheet 1, being an elevation of the breech end of a gun and Fig. 2, Sheet 2, a plan of same, showing the improved mechanism, Figs. 3 and 4, Sheet 3, are elevations at right angles to each other of the connecting link. Fig. 5 is a section on the line aa Fig. 1, and Fig. 6 a section on the line b-?) Fig. 1 showing the improved form of spherical joint, these two figures being to an enlarged scale.
As shown in the drawings, the breechplug A is mounted as usual on a pintle A on a carrier A swinging on a vertical pivot A at one side of the breech of the gun. To rotate the breech-plug A in order to engage and disengage its interrupted screw threads from the interrupted threads of the breech and to swing the carrier A carrying the breech-plug into the open and closed positions, there is provided a usual operating hand lever B formed in a piece with or mounted on a vertical pivot B turning in bearings in the carrier A According to the invention, this lever B has on it a pin B the axis of which is vertical. pin is the sphere member B of a spherical joint, the sphere'member' being constructed and held on the pin B as hereinafter described. The hollowspherical member C of this joint'is formed in one end of a link 0 the other end of which has formed on it a like hollow spherical member C engaging a secondspheremember C similar to'the sphere member B This sphere member C is on a pin D mounted on the breech-plug A, the axis of this pin D being horizontal and at right angles to the axis of the pin B on the hand lever B.
In order that the hollow spherical joint members C, C on the link C may be in one piece, the sphere members B C on the pins B D are not complete spheres but are equatorial sections of spheres of such width that they may be passed through a slot D formed in one side of each hollow spherical member G, C afterward being turned around to receive the pins B D. After the sphere members B C have been placed on the pins B D, they are held in place by washers D secured by screwed bolts D passed into recesses screwed to receive them in the outer ends of the pins, the outer surface of these washers being curved to the same radius as that of the periphery of the sectional spheres B C these sectional spheres and washers together making a sufficiently complete sphere to permit of ample relative movement of the parts, while the construction is inexpensive and at the same time substantial.
The movement of the hand lever B away from and toward the breech acts through the link C in known manner to open and close the breech-plug A as hereinbefore described, and it will be seen that the relative points of pivoting of the link upon the breech-plug and upon the hand lever are so devised thatthe link passes beyond dead center when the breech-block is completely locked in the breech. Thus, if any force other than that due to proper actuation of the device tends to unscrew the breech-plug, it causes the link to retain the lever in the closed position.
What I claim is 1. Breech-mechanism of the type described for ordnance, comprising in combination an operating member turning in a plane at right angles tothe breech of the gun, a link, and spherical joints connecting the ends of the link respectively to the breech-plug and to the operating member, each spherical joint comprising a hollow spherical member in one piece having a slot in one side thereof, a sphere member of an equatorial section of a sphere of such Width that it may be entered through the slot and turned around Within the hollow spherical member, a pin entered into the sectional sphere member, and means to hold the pin and sectional sphere together.
2. Breech-mechanism of the type described for ordnance, comprising in combination an operating member turning in a plane at right angles to the breech of the gun, a link,
and spherical joints connecting the ends of the link respectively to the breech-plug and to the operating member, each spherical joint comprising a hollow spherical member in one piece having a slot in one side thereof, a sphere member of an equatorial section of a sphere of such Width that it may be entered through the slot and turned around Within the hollow spherical member, a pin entered into the sectional sphere member, and means to hold the pin and sectional sphere together, said means comprising a bolt and Washer, the Washer being shaped to partially complete the sectional sphere, substantially as described.
