y vSpecification effIiettersV retient. Y j 1.4, 1919.
Appiica'tioniearray?,1919.' serial N0.'295,432. v
To all wt'omvit may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN 'SrrnwCHUR7 aV citizen ofthe Dominion of Canada, residing at 'H'amtonl Station, inV thev Province of 1 Saskatchewan and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful 1mprovements in Axes, of which the following j y Y Y r1bf22rwhich is adapted to seat in the groove i's a specification. l
The primaryk object o f the invention is to provide anvaX having an extensible head"- whereby the cutting edge may be adjusted relatively of the helve or handle of the aX and a dilferent form of cutting edge may be substituted when desired. Y y Y A further objectof the invention is to provide an aX head adapted for mounting a cuttingedge in adjustable positions relatively of the hel've of the aX, lwhereby cuts of different lengths may be madefby the aX and a longer or shorter head provided in a Ysingle implement to suit different require ments of use.
l/V ith these general' objects in view the rinvention consists of the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and then claimed.- I
In the drawing forming a part of this application like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the'several views, and Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention with the 'helve broken away, Fig. 2' is an end view thereof with the head partially broken away and Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional View ofy the head taken upon line lll-III of Fig. 1.
My invention comprises an aX broadly consisting of a handle or helve 10 having a metal head 11 secured upon one end thereof Ain the usual manner with the end ofthe helve positioned through an opening 12 in the head and securedl by anv expanding 'e wedge 13 driven into the helve. The head 11 consistsof threeparts, the enlarged 'end' ll attached to the'helve lO'in Ythe manner described, an interchangeable blade or cuthelve 10 is attached to receive ayV-sliaped rib 18 upon the adjacent'end of the eXtension member 16. Engaging sidev shoulders cuttingedge'23 of,themember` 15 in apositioiradjacent the helve 10 for rcutting during 'the use ofthe aX. A1 V-shaped groove lgare provided at oppositelsides of the rib 18 while securing screws 20 are extended througlr the joint formed by said rib and groove7 .the saidscrews being threaded into bushings'Ql threadedinto one side of the member lll. f
The blade 15 is provided .with a V-shaped 17 when desired, thereby A positioning the 24 in the outer end'vof theeXtension 16 is also adaptedv to receive the rib 22 of the blade member `15 when desired to position the blade at a greater distance from the helve 10. 1
`Screws 25 are provided for extending` through the rib 22 and the adjacent portion of the extension 16 for securing the blade member 15 upon said extension as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawing.
By this arrangement it will be seen that theblade member 15V may be secured upon the extension 16 to project either downwardly as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the'draw Ving or in an opposite direction upward whichever desired,v while the extension 16 may be eliminated and blade 15 secured to the attaching member of the head as may be found desirable. c v
A separate form of blades or cutting members 15 may be provided for attachment to either the extension 16 or member 14E having for instance side cutters as well as center cutters and also curved cutting edges besides straight cuttingV edges as herein illustrated. f Y
The invention possesses great simplicity andvprovides a head having great strength and adaptable for many different uses for which an aX is capable. 'y Y Y `l7l7hat I claim as new is 1 j Y l. An aX comprising a helvewith aheadV vmember secured to the end thereof,v an eX- tension member detachably secured to the head member, and a cutting member detachablyfsecured to said eXtension memben `2. An' 'ax head comprising an attachingv portion, Yan extension member removably secured tov one end of theattaching portion` and a blade l member interchangeable with'Y said extensionl adapted for removable-attachment to the extension member orxsaid attaching portion at will.
3. An aX head comprising an attaching portion having a longitudinal groove in one end, an extension member having a projecting rib removably secured in the said groove, and having a longitudinal V-shaped groove in its free edge and a cutting edge member having a rib adapted to be removably secured in the groove of said extension.
4. An ax comprising a helve, a head having an attaching portion secured to said helve and provided With a V-shaped groove in its free edge in a plane substantially parallel to said helve, an extension having a V-shaped rib adapted for seating in said groove, securing means between said rib, the said extension having a V-shaped groove in its outer edge parallel With said rib and a cutting member having a V-shaped rib removably Secured in the groove of said eX- tension With its cutting edge in a plane substantially parallel with the said grooves.
5. An aX handle comprising an attaching portion having a V-shaped groove in one edge thereof With shoulders at opposite sides o'l:` the groove, interchangeable extension and blade members each having a longitudinal V-shaped rib adapted for selectively positioning in Said groove of the attaching member and securing means. carried by the attaching member spanning the groove thereoit adapted for engaging the V-shaped portion of the coperating member when po-l sitioned therein.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
JOHN SHEVVCHUK.
