T 0 all lwhom it may concern Be it known that I, GASPAR BUELLESBAGH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, borough of Bronx, county 0f Bronx, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Convertible Beds, of which the following is a full, clear, and eXact specilication.

This invention relates more particularly to a class of furniture.

My invention has for its object primarily to provide a bed designed to be employed in hospitals, sanatoriums and elsewhere whereby the occupant may rest in a lying position, or may be arranged in a sitting or reclined posture without being removed therefrom, and which is adapted to be readily converted to a form somewhat similar to a reclining chair and vice versa. The invention consists essentially of a support having a head section and having a detachable foot section, and on the support is held a frame for holding a mattress, or other upholstery,'the said frame being -divided into a plurality of hinged members one of which is stationary on the frame to serve as a seat when the bed is converted to a chair, while lthe other sections are adapted to be adjusted upwardly and downwardly to various positions relative to the stationary member as well as to the support for converting the bed to a form somewhat similar to a reclining chair as occasion requires.

Other objects of the invention are to provide operative mechanism whereby the hinged members of the frame may be manually adjusted; and to provide a convertible bed of a simple, eiiicient and durable construction which is susceptible of being made in di'erent sizes.

With these and other objects in view, the invention will be hereinafter more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specication in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the Views, and will then be pointed out in the claims at the end of the description.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly broken away, of one form of convertible bed embodying my invention.

Fig. 2 is a top plan of the support of the bed with the mattress removed therefrom.

Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the bed when converted into a reclining chair form.

Fig. 4 is a detail sectionall view, partly lroken away, taken on the line IV-IV of Fig. 5 is an enlarged section taken on the line V-V of Fig. 1, showing a form of device for detachably fastenin together the head and foot sections of the ed, and

The convertible bed has a support 10 which may be composed of a head section 11 and a detachable foot section 12. The head section 11 has two spaced

13 and 14 one of the corresponding ends of which are connect/ed by a cross-bar 15, while between the other ends ot the side bars is a second cross-bar 15a. At the corners of the

13 and 14 with the cross-bar l5 are provided posts, as 16 and 17, of lengths so as to extend some distance below the bars -as well as projecting a suitable distance above the bars. The body of each of the posts may be tubular, and each post is divided into a lower member 18 and an upper member 19. The members of each post may be detachably fastened by providing in the lower end of the upper member a projecting fixed plug, as 20, which is removably inserted in the upper end of the lower member of its post, and between the lower membersy 19 oi the posts is a transverse bar 21 arranged some distance below the

13 and 14. The foot section 12 of the support has two

13 and 14 of the head section 11 so that the bars of both sections are on alined abutting arrangement, and these side bars of the foot section are considerably less in length than the side bars of the head section. Between the ends of the

11 and 12 may be detachably fastened in any desired manner, though these sections are `preferably connected by fastening devices, as 29, Figs. 5 and 6, both of which are similarly formed. Each of the fastening devices 29 has a plate 30, and one of these plates is sec'uredyoneach of the

13 and 14 of thel head section 11 of the support at the ends of the side bars. In the surface of the plate 30 of each device is a groove, or recess, as 31, and

through each of these plates centrally of the groove as Well as through each of the side -bars are registered threaded openings 32 for reception of a set screw, as 33. Each of. the fastening devices 29 also has a second plate 34, and one of these plates is secured on each of the

Projecting from the second plate 34 of each fastening device is a tongue, or linger, as 35, and these tongues are adapted to beremovably inserted into the grooves 31 of the plates 30 when the head section and the foot section are detachably connected, while through each of the tongues 35 is an opening 36 adapted to be registered with the threaded openings 32 of plates 3() of the .fastening devices for the passage of the set screws 33. To separate the foot section 12 from the head section 1l of the support the screws 33 are removed vfrom the openings in the fasteningv devices, and the tongues 35 are withdrawn from the grooves31 by guiding the foot section of the support accordingly from the head section, and by reversely moving the foot section the tongues will be rearranged in the grooves for reinsertion of the screws in the registered

The frame is divided into a seat section 40, a leg section 41, a back section 42, and a head section 43 all of which are adjustable with relation to each other when the bed is convertible to a form of chair. The seat section 40 is provided by separating corresponding central parts of the

38 and 39 of the frame, and from the opposed endsot these bars are two upwardly projecting short bars, 44, 45 and 46, 47, the upper ends of which are hinged toat 49', to the side bars of the support for fastening the seat section in a stationary position on the support. The leg section 41 of the frame is provided by separating corresponding parts of the

To allow the'leg section 41 of the frame 37 to be lowered with respect to the seat section 40, adjacent to the free ends of the side bars of the leg section are pivoted, at 84 and 85, the upper ends of two

When it is desired to lower the leg section 4l relative to the seat section 40 of the frame, the foot section 12 of the support is detached from the head section 11 after operating the devices 29, as hereinbefore explained, and the leg section of the frame is then swung downwardly from the seat section 40, as shown in Fig. 3. Having thus described my invention, I

claim as new and desire to secure by Iletters Patent l. A convertible bed including a permanent head section provided with end pairs of supporting legs, a foot section detachably connected to said head section and having a pair of supporting legs, a permanent seat section carried on said head section, a vertically' adjustable frame hinged to said seat section and supported by said head section when horizontally positioned, means to vertically adjust said frame, a back section rigid on said frame, a vertically adjustable head rest section hinged to said back section, and a leg section hinged to said seat section, said leg section being supported horizontally by said foot section when the latter is attached to the 'head section and being' swingable downwardly t0 adjusted positions when said foot section is detached from said head section.

2. A convertible bed including a permanentjhead section having side bars and provided with end pairs of supporting legs, a Jfoot section having side bars detachably connected to the side bars of said head section and provided with a pair of supporting legs, a permanent seat section carried on said head section, a vertically adjustable frame hinged to said seat section and supported by said head section when horizontally ositioned, means to vertically adjust said rame, a back section rigid on said frame, and a leg section hinged to said seat section, said leg section being supported horizontally by said foot section when the latter is attached to the head section and being swingable downwardly to adjusted positions when said foot section is detached from said head section.

3. In a convertible bed, a head section, a foot section detachably connected to said head section2 and a leg section hingedly connected to said head section, said leg section being supported horizontally by said foot section when 'the latter is attached t0 the head section and being swingable downwardly to adjusted positions when said foot section is detached from the head section.
