Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed August 16, 1917. Serial No. 186,464.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH C. FISCHER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the town of Wauwatosa, county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Indicators, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in indicators by which either the breaking of an electric circuit wire or a hot journal box will be instantaneously indicated.
The object of my invention is to provide a more simple and reliable device than has heretofore been made for indicating either a broken circuit wire, the failing of a battery, or a hot journal box.
My invention is further explained by reference to the accompanying drawing which represents a diagrammatic view thereof part in section. The several parts are referred to by reference numerals.
1 is a journal box of ordinary construction. 2 is a lubricating cup which is connected with and supported from said journal box. The cup 2 is rovided with insulations 3, 3, which insu ations 3, 3, are electrically connected with each other by fusible plate 4. 5 and 5 are electric circuit wires, the ends 6, 6 of which are connected with the fusible plate 4 by the binding screws 7, 7. One end of one of said wires 5 is connected with one pole of a battery 8 direct, while the other wire 5 is connected with the opposite pole of said battery 8 through the electromagnet 9 and wire 82. It will be understood that said electromagnet 9 thus connected willbe magnetized by said bat tery 8, whereby the free end of the switch 10 will be normally drawn upward and retained in contact with said electromagnet 9 as shown in said figure. When, however, should either of said wires 5, 5 become broken, the free end of said switch 10 will at once drop away from said electromagnet 9 when it, said switch, will fall upon the terminal 11 as indicated by dotted lines, whereby an electric circuit will be formed through the signal bell 12, whereby said signal bell will be sounded, and whereby a person in attendance will know at once that said circuit is broken or said plate is fused. When, however, the battery 8 has failed or become inoperative, said switch 10 will drop but the signal bell will not be thereby sounded. If, however, the journal box 1 becomes excessively heated, the fusible plate 4 will become fused, whereby said switch will drop and an electric circuit will be formed with the respective poles 13 and 1 1 of the electrogenerator 15, whereby a current will be formed as follows: from the pole 13 through the wire 16, switch 10, terminal 11, wires 17 and 18, solenoid 19, wires20 and 21, and thence back to said generator through the pole 14, whereby the plunger 21 of the solenoid 19 will be drawn inward, when motion will be communicated therefrom to the steam whistle 22 through the rod 23, lever 24, and valve 25, whereby steam will be admitted to said whistle 22 from a steam boiler, not shown, through the steam pipe 26, and whereby said whistle will be sounded. I preferably employ a signal light 27, which light is also connected with said generator through said wire 21, poles 14 and 13 wire 16, switch 10, terminal 11, and wire 1%, whereby said signal light 27, together with said steam whistle and bell will be sounded, thereby indicating through said several sources that the journal box 1 has become overheated.
When the free end of said switch 10 drops upon the terminal 11, a circuit is formed between said battery and signal bell through the electric circuit wires 29, switch 10, electric circuit wires 30 and 32, while the opposite pole of said battery 8 is connected wlth said signal bell through the electric circuit wire 31.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the described class, the
combination of a journal box, a cup supported from said box, an electromagnet an electric battery, a fusible plate supported within said cup, two electric circuit wires, one of said wires extending from one end of said fusible plate to one pole of said battery and the other wire extending from the opposite end of said fusible plate to one of the poles of said electromagnet, an electric wire communicating from the opposite pole of said battery to the op osite pole of said electromagnet, a signal ell, a switch, an electric circuit wire communicating from said signal bell to said switch, an electric terminal, an electric circuit wire communicating from said terminal to the wire whichcommunicates between said batteryand the electromagnet, whereby should said plate become fused or one of said circuit wires communicating from said fusible plate with said electroma net break or cease to work,
one end of said switch will drop upon said terminal, whereby an electric circuit will lie formed between said battery and signal ell.
2. In a device of the described class, the combination of a journal box, a cup supported from said box, an electromagnet, an electric battery, a fusible plate supported within said cup, two electric circuit wires, one of said wires extending from one end of said fusible plate to one pole of said battery and the other wire extending from the opposite end of said fusible plate to one of the poles of said electromagnet, an electric wire communicating from the opposite pole of said battery to the opposite'pole of said electromagnet, a signal bell, a switch, an electric circuit wire communicating from said signal bell to said switch, an electric terminal, an electric circuit wire communicating from said terminal to the wire which communicates between said battery and the electromagnet, whereby should said plate become fused or one ofasaid circuit wires communicating from said fusible plate with said electromagnet break .or cease to work, one end of said switchwill drop upon said terminal, whereby an electric circuit will be formed between said battery and signal bell, a steam whistle, a solenoid connected with said whistle,an electric generator and electric circuit wires communicating from the poles of .said generator'with each .of the poles of said solenoid, one of said wires being con- .nected through said switch and terminal,
whereby when one end of said switch drops upon said terminal, an electric circuit will beformed between said generator and-said Solenoid, I

whereby an electric circuit will be formed between said battery and signal bell, a signal light, an electric generator, electric circuit wires communicating from each of the poles of said generator with each of the poles of said signal light, one of said wires communicating through said switch and terminal.
