POWER-HAMMER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 14, 1919.
Application filed July 28, 1917. Serial No. 183,290.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN C., CRoMwELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Power-Hammers, of which the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a view partly in end elevation and partly irr transverse vertical section showing a power hammer embodying my invention with the guide rollers adjusted to a relatively Wide-open position; and
Fig. 2 is a section on the line II-II of Fig. 1.
My invention has relation to power or forging hammers and is designed to provide a hammer having guiding means mounted thereon of simple and effective character for coperation with the work piece being operated upon.
The nature of my invention will be'best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing, in which I have shown a preferred embodiment thereof, and which will now be described.
In these drawings, the numeral 2 designates the frame of the hammer having the supporting legs 2a. 3 designates the hammer proper. 4 is an anvil base, and 5 an anvil block mounted thereon.
In accordance with my invention, I provide the hammer with laterally adjustable guides at each side of the work piece, together with means for adjusting the same toward and away from such piece.' In the preferred form, these guides consist of vertical rollers 6, which depend from and are journaled to slide blocks or carriages 7, which are mount-ed for transverse movement on the guides 8. I preferably provide two of these guide rollers at each side of the work piece, substantially as shown. Any suitable means may be provided for their adjustment whereby they may be moved laterally toward and away from the center line of the anvil. It will be understood that in the arrangement shown, there are four of these guide rollers, there being one pair at each side of the longitudinal `center of the anvil and one roller of each pair being in advance of the anvil and the other roller behind the anvil.
In the drawings, I have shown electric motors 9, one for each pair of the guides, these motors being mounted on the frame of the hammer preferably at opposite sides and connected by suitable gearing 10, with right and left hand threaded adjusting rods 11, which engage nuts 12, on the slides or carriage 7. By actuating these motors, the slides together with the guides can be adjusted under complete control, as may be desired. The guides form effective means for coperation with the work piece, while being properly positioned on the anvil block.
I claim:
1.`Forging apparatus, comprising a hammer frame, a hammer mounted thereon, guides on said frame, carriages mounted for transverse movement on said guides, and a plurality of work-guiding members carried by and depending from said carriages, substantially as described. y
2. Forging apparatus, comprising a hammer frame, a hammer mounted thereon, guides on said frame, carriages mounted for transverse movement on said guides, and a plurality of work-guiding members carried by and depending from said carriages, together with means for actuating said carriages to move them toward and away from the vertical center line of the hammer; substantially as described.
3. Forging apparatus, comprising a hammer frame, a hammer mounted thereon, guides on said frame, carriages mounted for transverse movement on said guides, and a plurality of work-guiding members carried by and depending fro-m said carriages, there being a plurality of the guiding members at each side of the center of said hammer; substantially as described.
4. Forging apparatus, comprising a hammer frame, a hammer mounted thereon, transversely extending guides on the frame, slidable blocks or carriages mounted on the guides, and depending work-guiding rolls carried by said blocks or carriages; substantially as described.
5. Forging apparatus, comprising a hammer frame, a hammer mounted thereon, guides on said frame, carriages mounted for transverse movement on said guides, and a plurality of work-guiding members carried by and depending from said carriages, there being a plurality of the guiding members at each side of the center of said hammer and power means for Simultaneously actuating the earrlages; substantlally as descrlbed.
6'. In forging apparatusythecombination f with an anvil, of a hammer frame, a hammer mounted on sald frame over said anvll, and Work-fruldlng members mounted on' sald fra-Ine and depending therefromwat vopposite.
sides of the'anvil, together vWith means for movlng sald members toward and away `from the center line of the anvil; substan- JOHN e. CROMWELL.;
