Description

A. ANDERSON.
VALVE LIFTER.
APPLICATION FILED JAN.15. 1919.

VALVE-LIFTER.
L Specification;o fLettersi 'latentl v Application filed January 15, 1919. Serial No. 271,231.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDY ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hobart, in the county of Kiowa and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valve-Lifters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in valve lifters, and has relation more particuarly to a device of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in connection with valves of internal combustion engines, and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby the valve'may be relieved of the tension of the valve spring so that the key may be removed.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved valve lifter, whereby certain important objects are attained and the device is rendered simple, inexpensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the ac companying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in section illustrating a valve lifter constructed in accordance with the preferred embodiment of my invention and in applied position.
Fig. 2 is a view in top plan of my improved valve lifter, as herein disclosed; and
Fig. 3 is a view in plan of the yoke for coaction with the valve spring.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawing, 1 denotes a member having its outer or working face concave, and which is adapted to engage the top of the valve V. The upper face of the member 1 is provided with a socket 2 in which is engaged a ball 3 carried by the outer end of a lateral extension. 4 of the handle member 5.
The handle member 5 is bifurcated, and the kerf 6 thereof at a point in close proximity to the lateral extension 4 is intersected by a bolt 7 carried by the handle member 5.
8 denotes a substantially U-shaped member having one ofits side arms 9 extending within the kerf 6 and pivotally engaged with the bolt 7. The second arm 10 of the member 8 is of a length in excess of the length of the arm 9, and said second arm 10 terminates in a fork 11. The fork 11 is adapted to straddle the valve stem A and engage the lower end of the spiral spring S surrounding the stem and which is held in position by the key K.
By imposing an upward pull on the handle member 5, the member 8 will compress the spring S against the casing O and thereby relieve the key K of pressure so that said key K may be readily withdrawn and the valve V with its stem A can be removed and receive such treatment as may be de sired.
It is to be noted that the arms 9 and 10 4 of the member 8 are disposed longitudinally of the handle member 5 and toward the portion thereof provided with the lateral extension 4.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a valve lifter constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and scope thereof, and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein 7 a substantially U-shaped member having a arm of the Ushaped member when the leside arm arranged Within the slot of the vice is 111 workmg position. 10
