Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented oet'. 7, i919.
Application filed January 3, 1918, Serial No. 210,131. Renewed September 4, 1919. Serial No. 321,656.
To all whom t may concern s Be it known that I, CHARLES J. SCHIEMER, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Mount Joy, county of Lancaster, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Iniproveprovided with a suitable clamp at its lower.
end to enable the standard to be attached to a suitable support. At the upper end of the standard is cast integral a ,stationary upright jaw whose nut-engaging surface faces laterally with respect to the standardy and is provided with serrations. Formed integral with the jaw Z) and projecting rearwardly from its side edges is a pair of cheekplates c, in the upper ends of which are journaled the ends of a horizontal shaft CZ. Attached to this shaft el is an eccentric c which is attached to a hand-lever f, whereby the eccentrical cani will be supported by the shaft CZ and the eccentric may be rocked in the bearings in the cheek-plates.
Embracing the periphery of the cam or eccentric is the rear end of a yoke g consisting of a steel rod bent upon itself, the two free ends of the yoke thus formed being slidingly mounted in tubular supporting guides L formed integral with the stationary jaw -b at one edge thereof. The free ends of the yoke-arms extend beyond the tubular guides It and carry the movable jaw z' arranged in upright position and projecting laterally from theyoke-armsso as to be positioned at a point opposite the stationary jaw and thus coperate with the stationary jaw when the yoke-arms are drawn rearwardly. This movable jaw is attached to the yoke-arms by means of a pair of tubes y' formed-integral with the jawV and through which the yoke-arms pass, these tubular members being suiiiciently long to give the jaw a broad and substantial bearing or support upon the yoke-arms. The z' is adjustably mounted on the yoke-arms so as to enable it to be positioned nearer to or farther from the stationary jaw to adapt the device for different sized nuts. As a means of providing for this adj ustability of the movable jaw, I provide each yoke-arm with a series of notches 7c, these notches being positioned so as to be engaged by the opposite edges of the plate Z pivotally connected to the front face of the jawn' by pivot-screw m. It will be observed that by swinging plate Z upwardly by means of its handle n, the edges of the plate will be removed from the notches k, whereupon the movable jaw may be slid along the free ends of the yokearms and again locked in place by swinging the plate downwardly.
As stated, the eccentric e lies within the bent end of the yoke, this eccentric being so positioned that when the lever f is swung downwardly the eccentric bears` against the connecting bar of the yoke and draws the yoke rearwardly, thereby drawing the movable jaw toward the stationary jaw. When the lever f is raised, the yoke and the movable jaw will be pushed forwardly by means of plate.0,who'se bent ends p engage respectively one side of the eccentric and the rear side of the yoke, this plate being slotted at Q for the passage of the shaft d. This plate 0 may be affixed to the yoke in any suitable manner, preferably by raising one of the bent parts p to the -connecting bar of the yoke. It will be observed that when the leverV is raised, the eccentric will press against the adjacent lip p of the plate 0 and thus, through the medium of the other bent end p, push the yoke forward.
The nature and scope of the invention having been thus indicated and its preferred embodiment having been specifically described, what is -claimed as new is:
1. In a nut cracker, a support carrying a stationary jaw, a slidable yoke mounted in said aw and carrying a companion aw, an eccentric journaled in the rear of the stationary aw and provided with an operating handle, anda plate connecting the yoke to the forward face of the eccentric.
2. The strgucture recited in claim l, said plate being slotted for the passage of the eccentric shaft and having bent ends engaging respectively one side of the eccentric and the rear end of the yoke.
3. In a nut cracker, a Support carrying a stationary jaw, a yoke slidably mounted in said jaw and embodying a pair of parallel arms, means for slidingsaid yoke back and forth, a movable jaw adj ustably mounted on the bars of the yoke, the means of adjustment consisting in notching the yoke arms and providing a pivoted plate on the movabile javv for engaging in said notches.
4. A nut cracker consisting of a support Copies of this patent may be obtained for provided with a stationary jaw, an eccentric and lever jonrnaled on said stationary jaw, a one-piece rod bent to form a yoke having a pair of parallel arms Working in tubular bea-rings carried by Said stationary jaw, the
bent ends of the yoke being arranged to be CHARLES J. SCHIEMER.
ve'cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. C.
