Application filed Janiiaryfs, 1917. Serial n6. 142,654.
To all whom it mag/concern:
Be it known that 1, Enw11v a citizen of the'United 'States, residing in the city of Portland, county? of Multnomal'i, and State of Oregon, have invented ,c'eitain new and useful Impro'vemen tsi Ink- Holders for Pens, of which the following is E. TnolifAs,
a specification pens, and more particularly to a device adapted to be attached to a pen forholding a quantity of ink by capillary attraction so that the same will be fed to the pen as it used.
Among the salient objects of my invention are,to provide a device of the character referred to which can be used in connection with any ordinary writing pen, and which receives its charge of ink by being dipped into ink with the pen, or it can be loaded by dropping or wiping the ink thereon, as a drawing penis inked.
Another object of my invention is to provide a device of the character referred to which can be laid side-wise upon the paper without the ink running, or dripping, there from, and which can be emptied by being laid on its back upon a blotter, the blotter absorbing and drawing the ink from the device.
I11 order to clearly explain my invention I have illustrated one practical embodiment thereof on the accompanying sheet of drawings, which I will now describe.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a holder and thereto;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the device detached from the pen holder; and
Fig. 3 is an end view of the detached device turned on one side.
Referring now more in detail to the drawings, 1 designates a pen holder and 2 a writing pen, which may be of any desired type. My device, as here illustrated, comprises an attaching sleeve 3, having a tapered open end at 4, to facilitate the insertion of the end of the pen holder therein. Connected with said sleeve 3, by means of a connecting strip 5, which may be a continuation of the material of which said sleeve is made, is an ink holding device comprising a body portion 6, havlng a series of thin, spaced blades, as 7, preferably provided across their under edges with transversely extending grooves,

as 8, and also provided theretlirough with regifSieringholes 9. A-t opposite sides of the body; 6,. are projecting p,ins', 10 1Q, which serve to support the ink' holderand pen off t epaiper Whenthe devicis laid on its sideorder to prevent the ink from, getting on the paper or surface upon which the pen is I. thusla'id: y invention relates to ink holder's for.
The operation of my device is very simple as it is only necessary to dip the device, as assembled in Fig. 1, with the pen 2, into ink. A quantity of ink fills in the spaces between the blades 7, and is there held by capillary attraction, being fed down onto the top of the pen as the pen is used. The notches 8, across the under edges of the blades 7, as well as the holes 9, through said blades, facilitate the passing of the ink from one blade to another and to the pen.
In orderto drain the pen it is only necessary to lay the device upon a blotter with the back of the ink holder thereupon, for the blotter will absorb the ink, drawing it from the holder. One dipping of the pen and the holder into ink is all that is required for writing several pages of ordinary writing.
I am aware that slight changes can be made in my invention as here embodied for purposes of illustration, without departing from the spirit thereof, and I do not, therefore, limit the invention to these details, except as I may be limited by the hereto appended claims.
I claim:
1. In combination with a writing pen and holder therefor, an ink holding means above said pen comprising a plurality of spaced, vertically disposed blades, extending longitudinally of said pen with their lower edges adjacent the top of said pen, whereby to hold ink therebetween by capillary attraction and to feed it down onto said pen as said pen is flexed in use thereunder.
2. In combination with a writing pen and holder therefor, an ink holding means above said pen and comprising an attaching means adapted to be attached to the holder in an adjustable man11er,jand a plurality of spaced, vertically disposed blades, extending longitudinally of said pen and having their lower edges notched and resting upon the back of said pen, whereby to hold ink between said blades by capillary attraction and to feed said ink onto said pen as the pen is flexed thereunder in use, substantially as described.
3. In combination with a writing pen, an ink holding device comprising a body having a plurality of spaced, blade-like members, arranged edge-Wise above said pen, and adapted to hold a supply of ink there: between to be fed down onto the pen as the pen is used, said ink holding device being provided with a laterally projecting, sup porting pin for holding the same above the paper when laid on its side.
4. An ink holding device for use with a writing pen and holder therefor, comprising a holding member adapted to be apphed to the pen holder, and an ink holding device supported thereby above the writing copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the pen and comprising a plurality of spaced, blade-like members, arranged edge-Wise above the pen, and adapted to hold a quantity of ink therebetween by capillary attraction, whereby said ink is fed gradually onto said pen as said pen is used, said ink holding device being provided with laterally projecting, supporting pins for holding said device above the surface when laid on its side; I
Signed at Portland, Multnomah county, Oregon, this 2nd day of January, 1917.
