Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HANS PETER KARL THEODOR NIELSEN, 0F COPENHAGEN, DENMARK.
PROCESS FOR MANUFACTURING FEAT FUEL.
No Drawing.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Hans PETER KARL THEODOR NIELSEN, citizen of the Kingdom of Denmark, residing at Copenhagen, Denmark, have invented new and useful- Imrovements in Processes for Manufacturing eat Fuel, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a process for manufacturing a firm, hard and practically dry fuel from raw peat-mass, without briqueting the same.
The process consists in the raw peat-mass bein submitted to so-called wet grinding in a m1 1, preferably a ball-mill or tube-mill, whereby it is comminuted so far that not only the fibrous texture of the peat but also the cellular structure of the peat fibers have practically disap cared, the cells being torn asunder. Then t e water is allowed to run from the peat mass and, the latter is then subjected to ressure whereby it may be molded into the shape of blocks or the like. If necessary, the mass may be further dried by any suitable means, eit er before or after the molding. Before grinding the raw mass, it may be necessary to add some water thereto, in order to give it a suitable mushy or porridge-like consistency.
It has been demonstrated that, after the here mentioned thorough grinding, the peat- Specification of Letters Patent.

mass very willingly releases practically its entire contents of water, without the use of artificial means of separation, so that pieces as large as small briquets having contained, after the grinding, as much as about 85% of water would contain, after only a few days of drying in the air, not more than 10 to 15% of water, in which state of dryness the peat would be of firm consistency and form an excellent fuel.
aving now particularly described and ascertained my said invention and the manner in which the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is A process for the production ofpeat fuel from raw peat-mass, characterized by grinding the latter While of the consistency of mush by the pounding and abrasive action of balls, as in the so-called ball mill, until the cell structure has been disintegrated, so that the water is liberated and permitted to run from the mass, and after the material is thus partially dried, subjecting the mass to pressure.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HANS PETER KARL THEODOR NIELSEN.
