DOOR-OPERATING MECHANISM.
Specification of Letters Iatent.
Patented Oct. '7, 1919,
Application filed January 23, 1919. Serial No. 272,621.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Arena CAMPBELL a citizen of the United States, residing at C icago, in the county of Cook and. State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Door-Operating Mechanisms, of which the followin is a full, clear, concise, and eXactdescnp-tion, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in door operating mechanisms.
One object of the invention is to provide a simple and efiicient mechanism foropening and closing pivoted door and more particularly pivoted doors of dump cars.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide a door operating mechanism more particularly adapted for dump car doors and wherein means are provided for positively opening. the doors and maintaining the lat ter in open position.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a mechanism of the character above described, wherein tendenc of the load on the doors to turn the sha t in an opening direction is eliminated.
In the drawing forming a art of this specification, Figure 1 is a bro on view of a portion of a hopper dump car showing m improvements in connection therewith. Tfi e view is that of thecentral ortion of a car, the right hand portion of t e figure being in side elevation and the left hand por tion in vertical, longitudinal section." In the elevational part of the view, the hopper doors are shown in closed position and in the sectional part of the view the doors are shown in open position. Fig. 2 is a vertical, transverse, sectional view of the dump car shown in Fig. 1, the section corres onding substantially to the line 2-2 of sai figure. In Fig. 2 parts of the car are broken away in order to. prevent crowding of the drawing. Fig. 3 is an enlarged view partly in elevation, partly in vertical section illustrating more particularly the details of the door operating mechanism, the parts being shown with the door in closed position. Fig. 4 is a top plan view ofthe door operating mechanism propershown in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is 'a detail perspective of one of the drums employed in my construction. Fig. 6 is a detailed perspective view of the terminal link employed in my construction. And Fig. 7 1s a top plan View, detached, of the supporting or connecting link for the door.
nsaid drawings, I have illustrated my lmproved mechanism as. applied to a Well known form of hopperdump oar wherein the car is provided with four hoppers extending downwardly and from the ends of the car toward the center thereof, two on each side of thecenter sills, the hoppers being arranged in pairs as will be evident. Each of the hoppers is provided with a hopper bottom sheet indicated at 10, a door opening indicated at 11 and a hopper door indicated at 12, the hopper doors 12 being pivoted along their top edges as shown in Fig. 1. The doors 12 of each set transversely of the car are preferably operated simultaneously and for this pur o-se each set is connected by a cross bar in ioated at 13 in Fig. 2. The car is shown as provided with a cen ter sill of usual construction, the same comprising a pair of channels l4.-14, coverplate 15 and an apexlo-ad-shedding plate 16.
For each pair of doors 12 I provide an operating mechanism, the same comprising, broadly, a transversely extending operating shaft A, a drum B, a terminal link C, and a hook-shaped supporting or connecting link D.
Each shaft A extends transversely of the car beneath the correspondin hopper bottom sheet 10 and to sup ort t e shaft, suit: able bearing brackets 1 17 are provided secured to the tinder sides of the hopper sheets and to the inner longitudinally extending sidehopper sheets 18. The shafts are rovided at their ends with ratchet whee s 19, pivoted locking dogs20 and pivoted cams 21 to hold the dogs 20 against accidental disengagement, as will. be seen from an inspection of Fig. 1. The shaft is rotated in any suitablemanner as by a claw bar, as will be understood.
The drum B, shown most clearly in Figs. 3, 4 and 5, is mounted on its correspondingshaft-A at the center ofthe latter and di-r rectly beneath the centersill as shownin Fig. 2. Each drum B, comprises a sleeve sec-V tion 22, a link connecting lever arm 23, a bearing arm 24 and a kick-ofi' cam 25. The sleeve 22 is axiall cored or recessed soas to slip over the ,s aft A,.the.recess being preferably square and the shaft square. as shown in Fig. 3 so as to insure rotation oil the drum B in unison with the shaft. Refei ring to the eonstrnctionas illustreteelin Fig. 3, where the parts ere in the POSltLOIi assumed with the door closed, the lever arm 23 extends downwardly and at an angle to the vertical in a direction toward the door 12. At its lower end, said lever arm 23 is perforated as indicated at 26 to receive a pivot pin 27 by which the correspondingforked ends of the terminal link C are connected thereto. It will also be noted from an ineetion a l 1' '5 that the arm 23 15 J'rovlded with'en ntegra lielaiti'vely *wide flange 28 which overlaps the zatl-jneent'enfl of the link 0 and wiiieh'en gwges the ngper side'of the latter as indicated at 29 in 1g. 1 when the medhaznism is in the *position assumed with the 4100! in open position. As 'wiil be obvious, t his prevents the link C from swinging 'npwa'rdly about its pivot in 27 as the parts ereshown in Fig. 1 and hereason for this will appear hereinafter.
Thebetmn' arm 24 o fthe drum B extends substantially orizontally as viewed in Fig. 3 and at itS-otiter'or right hand end is formed with a vertical Halt bearing face 30 whidh is adapted toenga ac'orresponding flat bearing twee Merit other end of said link 0, whenthedoor is inelosel position.
It will also-he noted froni'am inspection of Fig. 5 that the arm 24 rovided at its said outer end with inwardly inclined ia-oes 3M2 on-e'mih sifle thereo" and with smootwenfiy extended Mg 33. said leg 33 is tapeied at its lower end as indicated at 34-. The lug 3B 'is tail-optedtoenter a corresponding'opening 35 in the linli C when the parts assume the position shown in Fig. 3, and it will be-evi'den't theft this interengegement of the lug 33 with the link G serves to positively position the link 6 when the parts are a proaehing the position shown in Fig. 3 and willsitiveigprevent'eny itters-t1 movement of e iinit with respeet to the bearing em 24. The lu'g 3% also erforms another ini'pot'tmlt'ft'mdtion inthat will engage the upper shoulder 1831i! fthe link 0 during the unwinding movement in the event the door should te steek ior any reason; sudh 'as freezin of the load, and therehv positively force e link *U in its unwinding notion simnlteneousl end-uniformly withthe movement of thee aft and hub.
Seid link C afdjatoent its hearing face 31 is id'efl with a air of rfomted ears flerstralltfling e'ends ofthe supporting or eonneetingli'tik flsuidend 3'? being als perierstedemi Hie two links tein pivotsffly esby mph: 3B. The hnk D is olfsulsstnntieily hook-she e a'scleerly apfrem ientl s. enlt-emote no its --eonnedtion to -the link C, the
Erik D is to the d'oors 12 mm meme en efholtlifl anrlpivot pin m, said ender: the ink i) being fenced to straddle the bolt 40 as indicated at {ESL-3i). The eye lt 40 is mounted between thee-hunnels ll41 forming the cross bar 13 and extended through a cover-plate 4-12 and is adjustable Within as by means of the nuts end lock nuts 42-42.
As shown in Figs. 3, 4: and 7, the link D is provided on. one side thereof with a beveled shoulder 43 in the same plane as the kickoff can] 25. The periphery 44 of said cam 25 is eeeentrie with respect to the center of the shaft A and is adapted to engage said shoulder 43 during the unwinding or opening movement of the mechanism so as to positiveiyforee said link: D and thereby the oorrespontling doors 12 to en'open osition. The lei-ek o flettm'25 in combination Withthe lung '33 obviously will insure the positive openingoi the doom even though the latter are frozen.
Referring again to the link C, it will be noted that the same is provided with n shoulder 45 adjacent the perforatedenrs 36, which shoulder 45 is adapted to engage the end 37 of the link D when the doors are in open position, as indicated at 1 6 in Fig. 1. By engaging the link C with the lever arin 23 as indicated at '29 in Fig. 1 a-nd'hy engaging the link C with the link D "as indicated at 416 in Fig. 1,, it is evident that the doors will be positively held lnopeh position and revented from swinging when the car is in transit, so long as the sha'ft A is in it position assumed when the doors ere open. It will also be observed that a line extending between the pivot pins 38 and 4-1 will pass below the center of "the shaft 14, as viewed in Fig. 3, so that the load on the door wiFl be tram-emitted three 'h "the link C to the bearing arm 24 of t e drum B in such manner as to positively eliminate my tendency of the load to turn the she-ft 14: in tin opening direction.
With the construction above described, the drum and links G end B may be made in the form of castings and the drum B is especially light since all metal ndt actually required in t rn-yin out the function of the drum, is eliminate 1.
