Application Vfiled July 24, 1916;,
.which the following is a full, Clear, COnGSe,
and exact. description, referente beingA had to the accompanying; drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention'relatesto brushes and iS` 0f particular service in brush employed for washing the interior .of bottles or other containers.l rI he invention has for its general object the Simplified and improved formation of a brush from a body of resilient or cushioning material such as rubber.
In practising my invention l providea plurality of cleaning fingers in body of rubber, the tips of some of these fingers be,- ing in union to form of fingers thus united a spring structure joining other fingers and the extent to which the other fingers may be spread' apart While the brush is in action and Qperatingto retract the same when the operation of the brush ceases or the speed of such operationv is re: duced. Thus the extent to which some ofthe brush fingers may be spread is yieldingly limited by the fingers whose tips are united and varies according to the speed of the spindle which carries the brush.
I will explain my invention more fully by reference to the accompanying drawing showing the. preferred embodiment of my invention and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the brush of my invention in action; Fig. 2 shows the brush in elevation and in an inactive condition; Fig. 3 shows the brush in elevation while in action, a part of the brush structure being shown in section; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a water conveying tube that desirably enters into the construction.
Like parts are indicated by similar characters of reference throughout the different figures.
The stock l is attached to the upper end of a spindle forming part of a bottle washing machine, the lower end of the stock being threaded for this purpose. The stock is hollowfor the passage of water and is preferably crimped at its upper end as indicated the formation of a Specification of Le'tterslatent. The brush structure is desirably of sym- Inetrioalforniation having e, Piiljof Central i fingers. and 7 that spring from the base 3 and which have their tips in imion,v the tip Portions of the vfingers 6 and 7 being desire ably integrati' The loaseor inner portions ofthe linsere end 7 ,are deernbly respete tively integral with the base or inner APortionsl ofthe ,fingere 8 and 9 between which lingers 6 and 7 are disposed, the fingers 6 and 7 `prefereloly separating from thexiin:

The fingers 8 and 9 are themselves desirably bifurcated at their upper ends to form sub-fingers 81, 91, the tips of these sub-fingers being desirably tapered as illustrated most clearly in Fio. 1. The base portion 3 `and the washing ngers are desirably integrally formed out of one piece' of rubber whereby no supplemental mechanical means are required for joining the fingers with their common base 3, though I do not wish to be limited to this arrangement. The united tip portions of the middle fingers 6 and 7 form a comparatively thick substantial cleaning body that may have effective scraping action upon the surfaces being cleaned while the tapered tips of the sub-fingers 81, 91 will effectively enter senting a substantial cleaning body to the surfaces rbeing cleaned but are highly flexible by reason of their separation so that the brush is not in action the spring structure 6 and 7 serves to draw in the lingers to have approximately the relative arrangement illustrated `in Fig. 2 in which the brush structure may readily be inserted within andv withdrawn fr'omthe bottles and the guiding sleeve that is employed to direct the passage of the brush structure4 into and out of the bottles. 1
WhileI have herein shown and particularly described the preferred embodiment of my'invention I do not wish to be limited to the precise detailsl 0f construction shown as changes may readily'be made without departing'. from the spirit of myrinvention, 'but having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters,v
Patent the following o l. A brush structure having two fingers formed of resilient cushioning material, the
tip portions of these fingers being united;
and an additional finger adjacent each of the aforesaid fingers, the latter being located between the additional fingers and connect- .ed with Vintermediate portions thereof, the first two lingers together constituting a spring Vfor drawing the remaining fingers toward each other.
2. A brush structure having two fingers formed of resilient cushioning material, the tip portions of these fingers being kunited and an additional finger whose intermediate portion is united with one of the aforesaid ingers that together constitute a spring for drawing the remaining finger inwardly.
3. A brush structure havingftwo fingers formed of resilient cushioning material, the
tip portions ofthese lingersbeing united;V
and an additional finger adjacent each of the aforesaid fingers, the latter'being locatedf between the additional fingers and Vconnected with intermediate'portions thereof,1thel first two fingers together constituting' al spring for vdrawing the remaininghyfing'ers toward each other, all o-f said fingers beingl integrally formed of the same piece'of ma-f terial.
4.' A brush structure having Vtwo fingers y formed of resilient cushioning material, thetip portions of these fingers being united; and an additional linger whose intermediate portionfis united with one of the aforesaid fingers that together constitute a spring for` 65 drawing the `remaining finger inwardly, all of said fingers being integrally formed of the same piece of material. c
