SCRAPER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 23, 1919.
Application filed August 5, 1918. Serial No. 248,404.
automatically dumped, thereby resulting in y a great saving of time and labor.
To this end the invention comprehends the provision of a scraper having a platform upon which the operator is adapted to stand to hold the same in position for loading and prevent dumping after the scraper has been loaded, enabling the material to be moved to any desired point.
The invention also comprehends the novel form of dumping means which will automatically operate to dump the scraper when the latter is relieved of the weight of the operator, and said means including a pair of arms having one of their ends secured to the scraper near one end thereof and extending upward to the opposite end of the scraper and carrying a weight which will overbalance the load and raise the end of the scraper to empty the same.
The invention further consists of the following novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a scraper constructed in accordance with the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same with the scraper in loaded position; and
Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the scraper in the act of dumping.
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the improved scraper comprises a scoop like member 10 Which is open at one end and has its opposite end and side edges provided with substantially right angular walls 11 and 12 respectively.
Any suitable means may be provided at the open end of the scraper for connecting thereto suitable motive power, while the opposite end of the scraper has extending transversely across the same a platform 13. Braces or stays 14 extend diagonally across the scraper from the opposite side walls 12 and serve to stiffen and strengthen the same. The platform 13 is for the purpose of providlng means upon which the operator may stand when the scraper is being loaded or after loading, so that it will be held in position to prevent dumping of the contents.
The invention is designed to provide novel means for automatically dumping the scraper when the weight of the operator is removed from the platform. This means consists of a pair of arms 15, each having one of their ends secured upon the outside face of the side walls 12 as shown at 16, said arms being curved and extending upwardly and outwardly with theirfree ends spaced above the opposite end of the scraper. These free ends may be connected by a bar or cable 17, which may removably support a weight 18, the latter being herein shown as a bag filled with sand or other heavy material. The weight of this bag is sufficient to overbalance the weight of the opposite end of the scraper, so that when the said end is relieved of the weight of the operator it will be tilted upwardly to dump the contents. For example the arms 15 may be secured either upon the inside or outside faces of the side walls of the scraper.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction. For example, the particular form of weight and the manner of securing it to the arms may be changed and the right is reserved to make these or any other changes that properly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed is:
1. A scraper embodying a scoop member, arms having one of their ends secured near one end of the scraper and their opposite ends extending upwardly and spaced above the opposite end of the said scraper and a weight supported at the ends of the arms.
2. A scraper embodying a scoop member, arms having one of their ends secured near one end ofthe scraper and their opposite ends extending upwardly and spaced above the opposite end of the said scraper, a weight supported at the ends of said arms and a platform mounted upon the scraper at the end of which the arms are secured.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature.
WARREN WING.
