PISTOL ATTACHMENT.
Application filed. May 20, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS L. KIRBY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Globe, in the county of Gila and State of Arizona, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pistol Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
Persons whose calling requires the carrying of firearms such as sheriffs, game wardens, forest rangers, etc., often find themselves in a position where a quick draw of their revolver is required in self preservation or in the protection of others find that their guns often stick in a scabbard or holster, and that when arranged in the hip pocket the grip is apt to contact with one of the ends of the pocket so that a quick removal of the gun is thus impeded.
Most officers of the law find the employment of a scabbard or holster uncomfortable and much prefer carrying their guns in their hip pocket. The great objection to this, as above stated, is the fact that the gun becomes so lodged in the pocket that the ready removal thereof is interfered with, and it is the object of the present invention to provide a grip lug for pistols or revolvers which will engage the upper and outer edge of a rear or pistol pocket permitting the barrel to be snugly received in the pocket but holding the grip or handle from entrance in the pocket, and consequently retaining the said grip or handle in a position whereby the pistol or revolver may be expeditiously removed without danger of the same being hung or caught in the pocket.
It is a further object of the invention to produce a device of this character which shall be of an extremely simple construction, which may be readily attached to the grip of any ordinary construction of pistols or revolvers, and which may, if desired, be integrally formed with the fire arm.
In the drawings I have illustrated a simple and satisfactory reduction of the improvement to practice, and in which draw- Figure 1 is a view illustrating a pistol provided with my improvement and showing the manner in which the same engages with the upper edge of the rear or pistol pocket of a garment for retaining the handle or grip out of such pocket.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the Jistol, the sie plate or" the partly broken ewe a Specification of Letters Patent.

ing a thin fiat plate 3 of a size to be snugly received between the handle 2 and one of the detachable side or grip plates ithereof. The body 3 is provided with a single opening 5 through which passes the upper screw 6 that secures the side plate 4 to the grip or handle 2.
On the body 3, at what may be termed the upper and inner corner thereof is integrally formed a lug 7 This lug preferably has its side face rounded and its outer or end face formed with a longitudinal groove 8. It will be noted that the lug 7 is arranged on the pistol at the juncture of the barrel with the breech or handle, and to the rear of the trigger, and slightly above the latter so as not to interfere with the free actuation thereof. The device may be arranged upon either side of a revolver or pistol to suit right or left hand operators. The groove 8 in the lug 7 receives the upper edge of the pocket in which the pistol or revolver is placed holding the grip or. handle entirely out of the pocket so that the barrel only freely rests in the pocket. By this arrangement the pistol or revolver may be quickly and easily withdrawn from the pocket but, bv the co-engagement of the grooved lug with the iocket is effectively sustained therein so that the same cannot he accidentally withdrawn or dropped from the pocket. The plate 3, although comparatively thin, serves as a filler between the handle portion of the arm and the grip 2, thus forcing the upper portion of the grip a slight but determined distance away from the upper portion of the handle of the arm. This is a very desirable feature, inasmuch as the user of the revolver will have his palm, inward of his firing finger firmly engaged with the V rounded edge of the lug serves as a directing element for the finger of the user.
From the foregoing description, when taken in connection with the drawings, the simplicity and advantages of the construction, it is thought, will be apparent without further detailed description.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
1. In combination with a fire arm, such as a pistol or revolver, having detachable plates on the handle thereof, of a body com prising a thin sheet arranged between one of said plates and said handle and connected to the plate and handle by the securing means between said plate and handle, said body, at one of the corners thereof having an extension providing a lug, and the outer face of said lug being grooved throughout the length thereof.
2. In combination with a fire arm, such as a pistol or revolver, having detachable side plates on the handle thereof, of a substantially rectangular body received between one of the plates and the handle and secured thereto at the upper portion of the said plate, spacing the said upper portion of the plate away from the handle, said body at the upper and inner corner thereof being formed with an outwardly extending lug which is widened upon its outer face, and which has its outer end grooved longitudinally and its lower edge rounded downwardly, and the said lug being disposed above the trigger of the fire arm and the rounded lower corner thereof being dis posed in a position to guide the trigger finger of the operator in the discharge of the fire arm.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
FRANCIS L. KIRBY.
