Be it known that I, SAMPsoN D. FOSTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Diego, in the county of San Diego and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Permutation-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates broadly to locks and more particularly has reference to a motor vehicle steering post lock.
As the primary object, it is contemplated by this invention to provide a device of the above character for locking the front wheels of a vehicle in a rigid position so as to prevent a theft of the vehicle on which the device is mounted.
More particularly this invention contemplates the provision of a slidable'bolt which forms a part of a permutation locking means, the bolt being adapted to engage openings in'both the steering post and the casing thereof, removal of the bolt being eHected by working the combination and withdrawing the bolt.
It is a more specific object of this invention to provide means for locking the lock casing to the base plate; to provide common means for facilitating the proper positioning of the locking means and maintain the 'bolt in proper position after it has been removed from the p ost; to provide resilient means for causing the bolt to automatically engage the steering post after being released.
A still further object ofmy invention resides in the provision of a device of the character described that is simple in construction, efficient in `operation and one that can be manufactured and placed on the market at a minimum cost.
Other objects as well as the nature, characteristic features and scope of my invention will be Imore `readily understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims forming a part of this specification.
One practical form of construction and assembly Willgbe described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my imvention in position,

Referring more particularly to the drawings in which similar reference numerals deslgnate like and corresponding parts through the different views, I `have illus- `trated the dash board 1 of a motor vehicle through .which is rotatably mounted the usual steering post 2, while a vtubular casmg 3 surroundsthe post 2. Disposed about the casing 3 and rigidly connected :to the dash board is the vbasee of my improved lock. The base 4 is provided with arthreaded recess 5 in the bottom of `Whichthereisrprovided an opening that is arranged in alinement with the opening inthe casing 3. '-In these alining openings :thereis mournted anexteriorly threaded sleeve 6 the boreof which 1s adapted to aline with an opening 7 in the purpose-to be yhereinafter described.

A screw capii) is attached to the outer end of the casing-8and is held thereon lthrough the ,medium of a locking screw 10. The lugs 19 and 20 may bein the form of a transverse piny that vpasses through the bolt, and the lugs project lfrom the bolt 13 and the -lug 19 is'longerthanthe lug 20 as shown in Fig. 6. The bolt V13 is novv rotated to the left or in an opposite direction until the one and one eighth inch markregisters With the line 40 and the right until the tvvoand one eighth mark registers with the indicating indicator Yi0 so that the lug 19 will engage the pin 29 so as to 4place the disk 27 in alinement with the lug 18.v Finally the' bolt is Vrotated to the left until 0, alines With theindicator 40 which places the lug 19in alinement with the slot 25 in the flange, and as all of the lugs are now in alinement With the adjacent disks by pulling' the, bolt outwardly and turning it a slight extent, the lug 19 Will become engaged in theV recess 26 and inthis manner hold the bolt in unlocked position. In order to lock the bolt it is necessary to revolve the bolt once to the right in order that the lug 19 Will be placed in alinement With the slot 25 in the iiange, Which movenient also places the lugs 16, 17 and 18 in alinement with the slots in the disks 27, 31 and 35, respectively, the disks 31V and35 having the spaced pins 32 and 36 resp'ec# tively which actas lguides for the lugs 16 and 17. One of the most-,important` features of this invention is the arrangement of the up-V right pin 33 on the disk 31 which is `positioned adjacent the outervedge of said disk so that it will engage the pins 36 When it isrotated but Will not be engaged by the short lug 17. Y Y l,
It is to be appreciated that I andV not to be limited to the specific arrangement'of disks, pins, and lugs nor theparticular combination described, since it isapparentthat by slightly altering the positions of thepins and lugs various combinations Will be provided but this vform is preferred over vother arrangements.

A permutation lock, comprising a base, a 1,30
tubular casing secured to the base, a plurality of disks mounted in the casing and each provided with a slot, a cap secured to the outer end of the casing, said cap provided in the outer face With a recess, a rotatable and slidable bolt extending through the cap and disks, lugs on the bolt for engaging the disks and adapted to pass through the slot in the disks, and a knob secured to the outer end of the bolt and adapted to normally be received in the recess in the cap.
2. A permutation lock, comprising a base, a tubular easing secured to the base, a plurality of disks mounted in the casing and each provided with a slot, sleeves arranged in the casing for spacing the disks, a cap secured to the outer end of the casing, said cap provided in the outer face with a recess, a rotatable and slidable bolt extending through the cap and disks, lugs on the bolt for engaging the disks and adapted to passV through the slots in the disks, a knob secured to the outer end of the bolt, and a spring for normally holding the knob in the recess of the cap.
3. A permutation lock including a base member, a lock easing mounted on the base member, a locking bolt rotatably and slidably mounted in the lock casing, a plurality of lugs extending laterally from the bolt and arranged in uniformly spaced relation thereon, a plurality of disks, a plurality of sleeves mounted in the casing and arranged alternately with the disks so as to suitably mount the disks in spaced relation, each of the disks being provided With slots to permit of the passage of lugs therethrough, pins depending from the disks and arranged adjacent the slots, an upright pin yon one of the disks for coperating With the depending pins on the adjacent disk, a knob carried by the bolt and positioned exteriorly of the casing and provided With a plurality of graduations, and a casing provided with an indicating mark for coperating with the graduations on the head so that by rotating the head in various directions the pins and lugs Will coperate with each other so as to arrange the lugs in alinement with the slots to )ermit of the bolt being Withdrawn from locking position.
