The halves 05-03 of the die are retained in the holder by means of the screws 9g and the pins gg, shown in Figs. 1 and 5.
H-H are screws going through the side of the shell A and penetrating longitudinal recesses LL in the inner member B, as shown in Figs. 1, 3 and 7 Within these recesses, as shown in Figs. 3 and 7, are spiral springs SS, retained in place by the cap 5 of the member B at one end, and the bushings 72,h upon the inner ends of the screws H-I-I at the other end. These recesses L-L with their inclosed springs are situated at opposite points in the wall of A, as shown best in Figs. 1 and 5, and the springs operate to normally keep the member B at its inner most position within the shell A. The spring 8 secured to the interior of the bottom of A serves as a slightly resisting cushion to the member B, and enables a bolt on which a single out has been made to properly engage the die on a second cut.
The wall of the inner member B is pierced by the holes JJ, shown in Figs. 2, 3, 6 and 7 and there are corresponding holes K K,
etc, in the outer shell A, shown in the same figures.
Inasmuch as rotation of B within A is prevented by the screws I-II-I sliding in the recess in B above mentioned, the holes JK cannot get wholly out of opposition, and these holes provide ample means for the discharge of chips from the dies which would otherwise accumulate and clog the interior.
The lever V is secured to the outer wall of the shell A by the hinge support '0, shown best in Figs. 2 and 6. This lever V is provided with the ball handle 0 and the wedge-shaped portion V, shown in Figs. 1
and 2. The lever V operates to close the dies when it is desired to do so, by pressing the wedge-shaped member V down upon the extremities of the holder Eadjacent to the hinge 6 thereof.

from the bolt or work on which the thread is cut. This guide is beveled upon the face I and upon impingement upon the ball 0 as shown in Fig. 2, depresses the lever V t us closing the dies and holder and preparing the same for the cutting of a new bolt or thread.
My device operates as follows The die-holder is suitably fastened to the tail piece of the machine or to a reciprocating turret, and the work on which the thread is to be cut is secured to the head stock of the lathe or machine. The turret is then pushed forward so as to engage the bolt in the die in the usual manner, the die-holder being closed and the member B being at the bottom or innermost position in the shell A by I means of the springs S-S. As the thread is cut by the die, the turret slides forward toward the head stock or spindle of the machine, and the bolt enters the member B. At a suitable predetermined point, the travel of the turret stops, but the thread on the revolving bolt continues to draw upon the member B and draws it forward until the outer extremities FF of the die-holder are drawn forward and disengaged from the embrasure f formed by the blocks c"c. The instant these ends F-F are released from the embrasure 7 they are automatically opened by the spring 6 thus releasing the work from the die and the entire holder with the die is drawn back by the retiring turret. As it recedes, the guide I with the beveled face]: operating upon the ball 0 of the lever V closes the holder E-E automatically and the holder is ready for a new bolt.
I am aware that prior to my invention automatic or self opening die-holders have been in use, but sofar as my knowledge extends such die-holders cannot utilize the ordinary commercial round die or any modi fication thereof, but are confined to special cutters of special dies which are costly and not kept in stock ordinarily by dealers.
In all the self opening die-holders known to your applicant the cutting mechanism occupies so much space that there 'is only a very little room for chips resulting in the machines becoming constantly clogged; whereas by my device there is ample room for the accumulation and escape of all possible chips so that the die is kept clear.
Automatic die-holders as ordinarily used are very expensive, whereas my device is capable of being constructed very cheaply; and in case of the breaking'of a die it may be immediately replaced by theordinary circular or button die by simply splitting the die in two equal halves diametrically.
Having now described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A self opening die-holder comprising a shell, a spindle arranged longitudinally of the shell, transversely arranged paired members atone end of the shell pivoted at one of telescopically associated members, a pair of dieholders pivotally' connected at one end to one of said members, and means carried by the other said member for engagement with'the'free ends of said holders whereby said holders may be adjusted to and from one another, substantially as described.

A self opening die comprising inner and outer members, means connecting the inner member to the outer member and normally retaining said inner member in its innermost position, a pair of die. holders pivoted to the inner member, means for the retention and automatlc release and separation of said die holders, substantially as I described.

A self opening die holder comprising an outer member, an inner memberslidably fitted in the outer member, means slidably connecting the members together, means for normally retaining the inner member in its innermost position within the outer member, and a cushioning member located between the inner and outer members, substantially as described.
5. A self opening die holder comprising telescopically associated inner and outer members, a pair of die holders pivoted at one end to said inner member, adjusting means carried by the outer member for en gagement with the free ends of the-holders whereby they may be adjusted toward and away from one another, and means at the pivot ends of said holders to permit of the automatic opening of said die holders at any stage of the cutting operation, substantially as described.
6. A self opening die holder comprising inner and outer members, a pair of die holders pivotally connected together at one of their ends in the inner member, said outer member provided with a recess receiving the free ends of said holder members when in one position, and spring means engaging said die holders to automatically open the latter when the inner member is extended.
7. A self opening die holder comprising inner and outer members, a pair of die holders pivotally connected together at one of their ends in the inner member, said outer member provided with a recess receiving the free ends of said holder members when in one position, means at thepivoted ends of said holders to open the latter when the inner member is extended, means to retract the inner member, and means to automatically :close the holders upon the reits-described." A self opening die-holder comprising telescopically mounted inner and outer members, means slidably connecting "the inner and outer members and holding the mem-' bers against relative rotation, a resilient member carriedby' the inner member and engaging the holding means to normally retain the inner member in its innermost position within the outer member, die holders carried by the inner member, and means for the retentionand automatic release and separation of the die-holders operable upon relative movements of said inner and outer members.
9. A self openingdie holder comprising inner and outer members, means slidably connecting the members together, a spindle carried by theinner member, a sectional die holder pivoted to the spindle, adjusting means secured to the outer member and engaging the free ends of the sectional die holder whereby the cut of the die may be adjusted, substantially as set forth.
10. A self opening die holder comprising inner and outer members, means slidably connecting the members together, a pair of button die holders pivotally connected together and to the inner member, adjusting means secured to the outer member and engaging the die holder for adjusting the cut of the latter, means secured to the die holders adjacent their pivoted ends to automatically open the same when the inner member is extended, and a wedge-shaped member pivoted at one end to the outermember and engaging the pivoted end of the holder with: its free end to automatically close the latter when the inner member is retracted, substantially as described.
11. A self opening die holder including an inner and an outer member, means slidably connecting the members together, die holders pivoted to the inner member, means to automatically open said die holder, means to automatically close said die holder, and a cushion element located between said inner and outer members to assure proper registration between the die and the work when a subsequent cut is made.
12. A self-opening die-holder including yieldingly telescoped inner and outer members, separable transversely swinging dieholders pivotally carried by the inner member, yieldable means to normally separate said die-holders, and means carried by the outer member to engage the free ends of the die-holders and hold the latter closed, said inner member being movable outwardly of the outer member to automatically disengage 'the free ends of die-holders from their holding means upon cessation of feeding during the threading operation.
13. In a die holder, a shell member having a button die supporting means associated therewith and provided with a flat rear wall, a tail piece provided with an outwardly directed annular flange forming a fiat end wall contiguous with said rear wall of said member, one of said walls having a plurality of apertures therethrough, and bolts having shanks loosely extending through said apertures and threaded into the other Wall to permit relative lateral adjustment of the member and the tail piece for compensating the shell, transversely swinging paired mem-' bers at one end of the shell pivoted at one end on said spindle and adapted to reoeive and hold the halves of a button die, means for automatically opening said holders and die, and means carried by the shell for automatically closing the free ends of said holders.
15. A self-opening die holder comprising 30 telescopically mounted inner and outer members, a resilient means to normally retain the inner member in its innermost position within the outer member, and transversely swinging separable die holders pivotally secured to the inner member, and means for the retention and automatic release and separation of the die holders operable upon relative movements of said inner and outer members.
