- My invention relates toan rimprovement in self-opening die-heads, whether rotary or stationary, the object being tovprovide' 4the` same Vwith simple, effective and ydurable means for locking and tripping the chasers. ' In carrying out my invention, as herein shown, Iemploy a pivotal tripping-member `1() located in a radial slot l1 in the ope'rat-r ing-sleeve 12 of the ydie-head. At its inner lend, the said memberl() is yformed with a transverse hole 13, receiving a 4pin n 14C on which the member has swinging movement and which is'gmounted `in ythe saidk sleeve.k The outer end of the said member' is formed with a limiting-opening lfreceivinga stoppinv 16, also kmounted in the sleeve, and of smaller diameter than the ydiameter yof the said opening, whereby theswinging move-r` ment of the said member is limited. Upon the curved outer edge of its louter lend. the said lmember is formed with a curved tripping-lug .17, designed to co-act with a suitable stop properly located inthe machine in the ordinary manner and not shown herein.

To prevent the relative rotation of the operating-sleeve 12 and the skeleton' die'- head body 22, the said Vsleeve is provided at opposite points in its forward face with two guide-pins 35 (Figsd and *6),* entering corresponding holes 36 in the body22, the said pins reciprocating backV and forth. in the holes 36, as the sleeve is'moved. backV and forth in the operation'- of thetdev'ice. y Y For the self-opening action of the diehead, I employ two helical springs (Figs. l and 5) located opposite each other and extending at their opposite ends into deep bores 38 in the operating-sleeve and compleinentary' bores 39 in the body ,22.l p
kAs herein shown, my improveddie-head is provided with fourlequidistant chasers 40 retained in place by four segmental plates t1 secured to the forward face of the body 22 by rivets 42. Spring-actuated plunger-s 43 exert a constant eiiort to move the chasersoutward into engagement with the beveled inner edge of the outer end of the sleeve 12 as shown in Fig. 2. But the specific character of the chasers andthe inode of mounting and operating them has nothing to do with my presentinvention, being made the subject-matter of a co-pending application, tiled by me in even date herewith.v So Jfar as my improved tripping-member isconcerned, it may be used in self-opening dieheads furnished with chasers of different construction, mode or mounting and operation. l Y
As shown herein, my improved self-,opening die-head is in its closed position ready for a threading operation, at which time the locli'ingasegment 1S is pushed outward into the eccentric' groove 27 in the sleeve 12, in which position its forward edge coacts with `the forward wall 26 of the said groove, whereby the sleeve is loclied in its forward position, in *which holds the chasers O in their cutting positions against the tension ot their spring-actuated lungers, and the sleeve 12 againstvtlie action of the helical springs 37, the said plungers tending to move the chasers outward, and the said .springs tending to iiiov'e the sleeve rearward. To permit the sleeve 12 to move `iol-ward fromr its tripped to its Chaser-closing position, the locking-segment 18 is formed with a peripheral bevel la (Figs. 2 and S), which is engaged inthe outward movement of the sleeve at the point 45 thereof, whereby the segment is camined inward andi the sleeve allowed to ride over it until the segmental groove 26 is brought into line with the segment, which is their lifted into its locked position, as shown in Fig. 2f, by the springs 25.
As already explained, my improved tripping-device is not limited to use with the chasers herein shown and described, since it may be embodied in self-opening die-heads having other forms of chasers and means lfor mounting the same; nor do Ilimit n selfA to the exact tripping-device herein shown and described, since the same may be modiiied in details of construction to meet avariety of conditions of use. I would, therefore, have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact tripping-mechanism shown and described but hold myself at liberty to make such departures therefrom as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
I claim:
1. In a self-opening die-head, the combination with the body thereof, of an ad- Vjusting-ring threaded upon the said body,
an operating-sleeve having sliding axial movement with respect to the said body and having upon its inner face a semi-circular,
eccentric lockingabutment, a radially-mow able locking-segment carried by the said adjusting-ring in position for engagemeiuI with the said abutment of the sleeve, yielding means :for moving the said locking-segment bodily outward into engagement with the said abutment, and a tripping-member inoui'ited in the operating-sleeve in position tobe externally-operated and adapted to engage with the said `lookin'gsegment for forcing the saine bodily inward from its eccentric Alocking-position i-nl which it engages with the said eccentric lockingeabutnient, into its concentric releasing-position in which latter it clears the said abutment.
