IMPROVEMENT IN PUMPS. I
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 131,644, dated September 24, 1672.
To' all whom t may concern:
Beitknown that we,ROBERT WHITE, of Mott Haven, county of Westchester, State of New York, and DAVID MORITZ, of New York, counyty and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Pump, of which.` the, following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l represent-s a front elevation, partly in section, of
our improved pump; Fig. 2 is a vertical trans verse section of the same on the line c c, Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a horizontal section ofthe same `on the line kk, Fig-1; Fig. 4 is a detail Verpump into a vertical or horizontal one as may be'desired. ,The invention consists,.ii'rst, in
" so arranging the ports in and to a cylindrical Valve chamber, that the same will operate equally well, when turned in either direction, on the face-plate of the pump-cylinder. This enables the same to connect at the bottom or at the sidewith the suction-pipe, and on the top or side with the discharge-pipe, and thus ton convert the pump into one drawing and discharging water in vertical or horizontal direction, as may be desired. The invention consists, also, in fastening the pump-cylinder to its frame by means of the suction-pipe and a nut thereon; also, in the arrangement'of concave guides for the cross-head on the pistonrod; and in swiveling the guide-frame to the end of the cylinder, so that theDperating-handle or lever can be turned to either side or into j any desired position.

and has ascrew-thread out on it to receive a nut, f, under said frame, as shown in Fig. 2.
By means of this pipe e and nut f the cylinder` is fastened to the frame, being further supportedn earts ends on projecting sa ddle-pieces g g of saidframe. The frame is made'of suitable shape, size, and material, with aplate, h, directly under the pump, and a ledge, i, all
around said plate, forming a drip-catch, which.
the valve-chamber is circular, and is also held i in place by the pin j and nut l. Directly where the chamber E is in contact with the cylinder A the side of the latter is made straight, and
'formed into a circular enlargement, as is clearly shown in Fig. 5. The central part ofthis enlargement is recessed or sunkand divided diametrically into two curved channels, n and n', which communicate, respectively, with the ports o and o at the ends of the pump. The suctionpipe e ends in a curved groove, p, formed in the face of the above-mentioned circular enlargement nearer the edge of thevsame, as is also shown in Fig. 5. The Valve-chamber E containstwo horizontal partitions, rr, which are connected in the middle by a bridge, s, thus forming four chambers, t, t1, t2, and t3. The four valves u u1 and/1,2 a3 are in pairs fitted upon the perforated partitions r r, one on either side of the bridge s on each partition. A slot, c, in the lower chamber t communicates with the groove p and suction-pipe. Apertures lw w in the middle chambers t1 and t2 communicate with the channels n al and ports o o', while from the upper chamber t3 extends the discharge-pipe F, containing a check-valve, x. This check-Valve is of importance, as it supports the column of water in the dischargepipe whenever the valve-chamber is opened for inspection or repair, in which case only the water actually contained in the valve-chamber will be wasted.
When the valve-chamber is applied in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the pump will draw and discharge water vertically.; but the valve-chamber can be turned to bring the discharge-pipe into a horizontal position or nclined, in which case the pump will draw water vertically and discharge it horizontally or obliquely, or the suction-pipe may be coupled directly to the valve-chamber at y to communicate with the chamber t, in which case both suction and discharge will be horizontal. These remarks apply when the frameD stands 'horizontally, as shown. When the same is placed vertically against the side of a wall, well-curb, or other place the relations of the other parts will change in a corresponding measure.
The operation of the valves need not here be described, since it is not new, nor is anything claimed in the construction or arrangelnent of the valves. The valve-chamber, instead of turning on the pin j, may be held in place by outside bolts at or near its periphery, and allowed to be turned on the pump, the saine as hereinbei'ore described.
The piston-rod C has a cross-head, a2, formed on its outer end and Working between parallel guides b2 b2, which are formed in a frame, Gr. This frame has an annular plate, d2, formed at one end embracing the packing gland or ring e2, and held by a nut, f2, but so that it can be turned freely whenever said nut is loosened. The contact edges of the cross-head a2 are convex, and those of the guides b2 b2 concave transversely, the lateral displacement of the cross-head being entirely prevented. H is the operating handle or lever, pivoted at g2 to the guide-frame G, and at h2 to the crosshead.
The frame G being swiveled to the end ofthe cylinder, allows the handle to be brought to either side or used vertically as may be desired. When it is desired to shorten the lever it can be pivoted with its end to the frame, and at the middle to the crosshead, whereby it will also be changed from a lever of the first class to one of the second.
-Having thus described our invention, we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent-f 1. The valve-chamber E, so applied to the pump that it can be turned thereon to regulate the direction of the discharge, substantially as set forth.
2. The channels a n connecting with the ports o o and the groove p, connnecting with the suction-pipe e when formed on the side of a pump, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. The valve-chamberE, containing the compartments t, t, t2, and t3, and provided with the slot v and apertures w w, substantially as herein shown and described.
4. The guide-frame G, carrying the handle H and the cross-head a2 when swiveled to the end of the pump-cylinder, substantially as specified.
5. The concave guides b2 b2, when arranged in combination with the convex-edged crosshead a2, as specified.
