Description

l. R. GILLSON.
DRAFT REGULATING DAMPER. APPLICATION FILED APR. 14. 1917-.
1,3 1 6,439 A Patented Sept. 16, 1919.
um M 601 UNITED STATES JOHN It. GILLSON, OF ST. JOHN, NORTHDAKOTA.
DRAFT-REGULATING DAMPER. I
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 16, 19 19 Application filed April 14. 1917. Serial No. 162.018.
To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, JOHN R. GILLsoN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of St. John, in the county of Rolette and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draft-Regulating Dampers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved draft regulating and controlling means for stove pipes and it is the primary object of the invention to provide an adjustable draft regulating means so constructed as to permit of minute adjustment thereof, the device being especially adapted for use in windy localities where the adjustment of the conventional type of damper now common to the art is insufficient, allowing the draft to become too intense when partly opened and too weak when closed.
Among other aims and objects of the invention may be recited, the provision of a device of the character mentioned with a view of compactness, and in which the number of parts are few, the construction simple, the cost of production small, and efficiency and operation high.
The improvements in the details and arrangement of parts will be apparent from an inspection of the accompanying drawing in connection with the specific description hereinafter contained, and wherein the preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed for the purpose of facilitating a full understanding of the same.
In the drawings;
Figure 1 is a top plan of the improved draft-regulating means, and
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof.
Referring now more specifically to the several figures of the said drawings and in connection with which like reference characters will designate corresponding parts, there is provided a split sleeve designated 1, the opposite extremities of which are flanged as at 2 and are provided with a plurality of openings whereby bolts or like fastening devices 3 may be passed therethrough.
A plurality of juxtaposed dampers 4 comprising semi-eircular plates are arran ed upon hearing pintles 5 journaled in suita le openings formed in the opposite sides of the split sleeve 1. Within the dampers 4: open ings 6 are arranged and serve for an obvious purpose. v of the extremities of the bearing pintles 5 are screw threaded and are adapted to have locking nuts 8 turned to engagement there'- with, the'purpose of which will be subsequently apparent.
To the oppositely disposed screw threaded extremities of the bearing pintles 5 arms- 7 are secured, the same being fixedly mounted thereon through the medium of locking nuts 8, above referred to. It is to be noted, that the arms 7 are arranged substantially parallel to their respective dampers 4.
Counterwei hted arms 9 are pivotally supported upon the opposite sides of the split sleeve 1 in proximity to the mounting of the arms 7, and are formed with an enlarged ortion 10 serving as a counter-weight.
he arms 9 are eonneeted with the arms 7 by links 11. Due to the positioning of the enlarged portions 10 upon the arms 9, it is obvious that the same will serve to counterbalance the dampers 4; and will serve as means for causing free movement thereof within the sleeve 1.
Chains 12 or other suitable flexible connections are engaged with one side of the free extremities of the arms 7 and are adapted to have their free ends engaged between the tapered bifurcated portions of angular bracket members 13 which are secured to the sleeve 1 in proximity of the arms 7 as at 14. To facilitate operating the chains- 12 finger rings 15 may be and preferably are a secured to their free ends.
In operation, the adjacent ends of stove pipe sections are clamped within the split sleeve 1 by means of the flanges 2, and the bolts 3. To adjust the dampers 4, the several chains 12 as engaged therewith are pulled laterally, thus raising their respective dampers. To secure the dampers in adjusted position the links of the chains 12 are engaged between the tapered bifurcated ortions of the angular brackets 13. As will e understood, minute adjustment of the dampers 4 will be permitted in order that too intense a draft in the stove pipe will be obviated and yet a draft of sufiicient intensity to cause the free burning of the fire will be permitted. Observation of the arms 7 will disclose the positions of the several dampers 4 within the sleeve 1.
It is to be understood, that if desired, the
As shown in Fig. 1,- certain indicating arms 4 may be provided with various forms or designs of indicating means and that a series of graduations may be arranged upon the opposite sides of the split sleeves 1 whereby the exact positioning of the several dampers within the said sleeve will be indicated through the medium of the graduations.
As hereinbefore indicated, I do not wish to be understood as confining the invention to the particular embodiment chosen for illustration herein, nor to the exact construction, arrangement and adaptation of the parts shown and described, but I reserve the right to make any changes and alterations that fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the invention.
A draft regulating device comprising a sleeve, a plurality of juxta-posed dampers positioned in the sleeve and each having pivot pins journaled in the sleeve with one pin extended beyond the sleeve, levers fixedly secured to the extended pins and extending parallel to the dampers, weighted arms pivoted to the sleeve adjacent the levers, a link loosely connecting one end portion of each arm with its lever, brackets connected with the sleeve, and chains con nected with the levers and releasably engaged with the brackets.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature hereto.
JOHN R. GILLSON.
